Manchester City: Fans blast Aymeric Laporte display

A number of Manchester City fans were unimpressed with Aymeric Laporte in their 2-1 win over West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola made two changes from the 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in midweek, with Gabriel Jesus and Laporte coming in for Oleksandr Zinchenko and John Stones.

It was the Spain centre-back who came in for criticism from a section of City supporters. The 27-year-old made his 10th league start of the season but struggled when coming up against Michail Antonio at the Etihad Stadium.

Laporte was booked in the first half after a risky challenge on the Jamaican on the edge of the penalty area and was fortunate that the resulting set-piece came to nothing.

Along with his booking, the Spain international made just one tackle all afternoon, lost the ball on five occasions and recorded zero blocks. [SofaScore]

Jose Mourinho would be the man to change Tottenham’s mentality

Tottenham seem to be at a crossroads at the moment. They don’t have their new stadium yet, they crashed out of two competitions in a week, and some of their players are being linked away from the club.

What’s worse is that manager Mauricio Pochettino could well be leaving the club soon, not only due to the interest from rival clubs, but because he may be growing bored of the lack of trophies and progress Tottenham seem to be making.

One man that could bring a completely radical new approach to Tottenham is former Man United boss José Mourinho. Now we are not saying that the Portuguese is going to join Tottenham, or even linked with a move to north London, but it is a possibility that Daniel Levy may need to think about should his current manager leave.

This would be a controversial call, as Mourinho is a very divisive figure, but here are the pros and cons of Mourinho joining Tottenham:

Pros Status

Whether he is popular or not, there is no denying that Mourinho is one of, if not the most well-known manager in the world.

If Tottenham were able to attract the Portuguese to their club, it would send a huge message to the rest of the world. Some fans would even argue that they would suddenly be put in the same conversation as Chelsea, Man United, Real Madrid and Inter Milan- all European Giants that Mourinho has managed.

This would be a very good move for Tottenham’s global appeal.

Track record

Pochettino has made Tottenham into one of the most attractive teams to watch in England, and indeed Europe. He has overseen some very successful performances and seasons as a whole but there is one glaring blemish on his career so far and that is his lack of a trophy. He has made it to semi finals and indeed a League Cup final, but still has nothing.

Mourinho is almost stylistically the opposite of the Argentinian, creating boring and defensive teams to some, but he has undeniably had a lot of success. He could bring a winning mentality that Spurs have perhaps lacked in recent years.

At every club he has been with, he has got silverware which to many Tottenham fans is all they may want. He could be the missing piece in their puzzle and toughen up a traditionally fragile team.

Cons Man management

For a long time there was no questioning the methods and style of Mourinho as it was hard to criticise a manager that had been successful in every club and country he had managed in.

But he started to turn a few heads with Man United, particularly regarding his man management.

He fell out with a number of players and oversaw a drastic drop in form by many of them. This was surely one of the leading factors in his sacking and he now has a job to prove that he is not a negative effect on others.

On the other hand, Pochettino has a great rapport with all his players and any senior figure at Tottenham will be wary of the Portuguese’s arrival.

Outdated

There were also questions during Mourinho’s spell at Man United whether he was becoming outdated as a manager. As teams like Man City, Liverpool and Tottenham play progressive football, Mourinho’s Man United look like they were from a different era.

Perhaps he is past his sell by date and Tottenham would not want to risk devastating a team that play so positively under Pochettino.

Verdict

Given the way that Mourinho tarnished his reputation at Man United, this is a risk that Levy should avoid. Whether fans agree with Mourinho or Paul Pogba after their ongoing feud, it is an environment that Tottenham just cannot afford to create.

That being said, Tottenham do need to look to a manager like the Portuguese in terms of their winning mentality if the situation does arise when they need a new manager. But this is a potential disaster they should avoid.

West Ham linked with Adama Traore move

West Ham have joined Tottenham in the race to sign Adama Traore in the January transfer window, according to reliable journalist John Percy.

The Lowdown: Traore on the fringes

The 25-year-old has found himself in and out of Wolves’ team this season, starting 10 Premier League matches overall but only completing a full 90 minutes on five occasions.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Traore has been linked with a move away from Molineux this month, with Liverpool one of the clubs thought to be keeping an eye on the situation.

The speedy winger’s current Wolves deal expires in the summer of 2023 and he doesn’t appear to be close to extending his stay at the club.

The Latest: West Ham linked with move

According to The Telegraph’s Percy, West Ham have now entered the race to sign Traore, who could be available for £20m in January.

Spurs are also mentioned as potential suitors for the Spain international, as the two clubs look to strengthen their squads in the race for Champions League football.

The Verdict: Potential big-money risk?

Traore is a hugely entertaining player to watch – Jurgen Klopp has described him as ‘unplayable’ – with his pace arguably unrivalled and his dribbling ability often a nightmare for defenders to handle – his match average of 4.7 in that respect is the best of any player in the Premier League.

That being said, a lack of end product has long been his downfall, and he is yet to register a single goal or assist in 17 league appearances this season prior to his team’s clash against Manchester United this evening. Ten goals and 18 assists in 150 Wolves appearances overall is also a disappointing return.

David Moyes may believe he can turn Traore into the all-round package, but given the transfer fee being mooted, there would be a clear element of risk behind the prospective signing.

The Athletic reveal Bissouma latest

The Athletic’s Brighton correspondent Andy Naylor has confirmed that Premier League rival Aston Villa are interested in midfielder Yves Bissouma.

What’s the story?

After Sky Sports initially reported that the West Midlands club are interested in Bissouma, The Athletic have confirmed that this is true, with Andy Naylor stating that the south-coast club is “in a delicate position.”

Naylor also added: “They [Brighton] have the advantage of not needing to sell. There’s no desire to lose the influential defensive midfielder midway through a campaign rich in promise under head coach Graham Potter.

“The crunch point will come if any of Bissouma’s multiple admirers table what Brighton deem to be a suitable bid, which would be one of around £50 million.

“An offer of that magnitude would demand serious consideration from owner-chairman Tony Bloom, primarily because Bissouma only has 18 months left on his contract.”

The Villans are yet to table a bid for the midfielder, however, with the Malian entering the final year-and-a-half of his contract, a deal could be struck this month.

Villa fans will be buzzing

This would be a wise move from Villa, who have already made the audacious capture of Philippe Coutinho on loan in January.

With the long-term injury to midfielder Marvelous Nakamba, the addition of a central midfielder this window, in particular Bissouma, would surely leave supporters delighted.

Both Douglas Luiz and John McGinn have impressed under new manager Steven Gerrard, whose preference is to set up with a 4-3-3 formation, meaning that Nakamba’s absence is a particularly big blow.

However, with Bissouma being a more defensive-minded midfielder, the 25-year-old could prove to be the ideal replacement, especially when you consider his supremely eye-catching tally of 3.6 tackles per game in the top-flight this term.

20-year-old Jacob Ramsey has been deployed in the middle of the park on occasion and has impressed, scoring against Norwich, but the midfielder is still very young and will require good management from Gerrard.

Moreover, it would be a risk to rely on the Englishman to start the majority of Villa’s remaining games with the Villans targeting a top-half finish whilst Europe isn’t completely off of the cards yet.

Thus, the potential arrival of the Seagulls enforcer would very much fit the bill this winter.

Arsenal to move for Mykhailo Mudryk?! Gunners among clubs linked with shock transfer for £89m Chelsea flop

Arsenal have been linked with a surprising move for struggling Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk in the summer.

Mudryk originally wanted by ArsenalSigned for Chelsea but has struggledGunners interested alongside JuventusWHAT HAPPENED?

The Ukraine international was signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2022 for a staggering fee worth up to £89 million ($113m) including add-ons. Thus far Mudryk has come nowhere near living up to that price tag, with his most impressive showings arguably coming on his debut against Liverpool and during pre-season this term. Despite an underwhelming start to his Chelsea career, Arsenal are reportedly interested in bringing him to north London, according to Spanish outlet .

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The report notes that Chelsea will listen to offers for the 22-year-old winger, with a primary objective being a loan transfer to build up his development. However, the Blues could be interested in a permanent sale, where Arsenal and Serie A giants Juventus are listed as potential suitors. That said, Chelsea would look to recoup a significant portion of that £89m investment which, as the report acknowledges, would be difficult given Mudryk's recent performances.

DID YOU KNOW?

Arsenal, of course, were once seen as the primary location for Mudryk before his eventual switch to Chelsea. Mikel Arteta is thought to be a big fan from his Shakhtar playing days and only neglected to sign him after being usurped by the Blues' mammoth offer at the 11th hour. Videos had even been circling of Mudryk praising Arteta and wearing an Arsenal shirt.

Chelsea may hope their north London counterparts do them a favour as they did when signing Kai Havertz for a staggering £65m ($82m) last summer, and pay over-the-odds for another struggling forward. However, that eventuality would require Mudryk to build on his sorry tally of four goals in 26 appearances this term.

Hampshire hold off Miller to take t20 title

Hampshire survived a terrific late assault by David Miller, Yorkshire’s South African overseas player, to clinch the Friends Life t20 title by 10 runs

David Hopps in Cardiff25-Aug-2012
Scoreboard and ball-by-ball detailsDavid Miller almost took Yorkshire over the line in a thrilling display of hitting•Getty ImagesFor the last half-hour of this Friends Life t20 final, Hampshire had only one aim: dismiss David Miller. They never managed it, well not officially anyway, but somehow they survived his cudgelling assault to win the trophy for the second time in three years. Quite how South Africa can overlook a batsman of such ferocious power for World Twenty20 will be hard for anybody who witnessed his assault to understand.Ten years had passed since Yorkshire’s last trophy, a difficult ten years in which the rebuilding of Headingley had left them mired in debt. They are going to the Champions League Twenty20 next month, and their priority remains promotion from Division Two of the Championship, but the one-day trophy will have to wait.Yorkshire, though, found a new hero: a muscular 23-year-old import from Pietermaritzburg. Miller finished as the tournament’s leading six-hitter, another five disappearing into the night sky against Hampshire. But with 14 needed off Chris Wood’s final over, the big hits dried up. He finished on his haunches, 72 not out from 46 balls, the only batsman in the last two matches on a slow, grabby surface whose power hitting was not inhibited.Hampshire were convinced they dismissed him on 7 when he flicked Liam Dawson’s left-arm spin into the leg side and Neil McKenzie plunged forward at short midwicket. The umpire, Rob Bailey, referred it to the third umpire, Nick Cook, who after many TV replays predictably found no conclusive evidence to rule that he was out. Miller looked fortunate; as he began to plop balls into the River Taff, Hampshire looked resentful.McKenzie made no attempt to disguise his feelings. “I definitely did take it,” he said. “I pride myself on being one of the more honest guys around but the umpires decided to take it upstairs.”If Wood’s nerve held, so did Danny Briggs’, a graceful slow left-armer with the wit to adapt to Twenty20, whose confidence that he can acquit himself well for England in World T20 will be boosted by this experience. He also shrewdly calmed Miller with 21 needed off the last two. “He was hitting so well straight and the straight hits are quite short here so I bowled it a bit shorter to make him go square,” he said.Yorkshire’s transformation in the FLt20 this season, overseen by a new Australian coach, Jason Gillespie, had taken them to their first finals day, but a target of 151 was a demanding task on a pitch which suited Hampshire’s blend of spin bowlers and cutters so much that their chairman, Rod Bransgrove, might have transported it up from the south coast. Marcus Trescothick, Somerset’s beaten captain in their semi-final against Hampshire, had identified 140 as around par and he was a good judge.Dimitri Mascarenhas needed a fitness test on a shoulder injury after Hampshire’s semi-final victory against Somerset after another before the final, but his four overs up front still did its customary damage. Andrew Gale unleashed a few square drives before dragging on a leg-side heave and Joe Root’s uncomfortable day ended when the stumps were hit again. Mascarenhas was denied a third wicket of Phil Jaques when Vince failed to hold a running catch from long on.It was Jonny Bairstow and Miller who provided Yorkshire’s surge from 36 for 3 in the semi-final. When Jaques fell to Dawson, another inside edge on a slow surface, they needed to do it again. This time Miller had to do it alone; Briggs found a semblance of turn and Bairstow dabbed a catch to the wicketkeeper.Yorkshire needed 98 from the last 9 overs, at which point Miller launched his assault. Ervine disappeared for three sixes in an over, Briggs and Wood were punished in turn. But Gary Ballance, another Yorkshire hitter found wanting, fell at third man and Tim Bresnan skied the first ball of the last over into the off side. Miller’s one-man show fell short.Hampshire secured a winning score in conventional fashion, Jimmy Adams and James Vince doing the groundwork. They looked underpowered, but Yorkshire were not quite as sharp as in their semi-final defeat of Sussex.Vince required some fortune to survive Azeem Rafiq’s first over, twice failing to make contact with attacking shots and almost offering Bairstow stumping chances. He made 43 from 37 balls, his grandest statement – when he hauled Richard Pyrah over long on off one knee – ending to a checked drive off the next ball.Vince ‘s first boundary did not come until the 15 over, a stylish extra cover drive off Bresnan, and brought up 100 at the same time. Another solid, if unspectacular, innings, 36 from 33, ended when he was bowled by Moin Ashraf, who failed to hit his yorkers quite as unerringly in the semi-final, but who got one through Vince’s defences all the same.Gale entrusted the last over to the blockhole bowling of the tyro, Ashraf, rather than the back-of-a-length know-how of Bresnan, his England bowler, who had conceded only 18 from three overs. It went for 14, not an unmitigated disaster, but it was a decision that was hard to understand.

Current crisis won't affect Clarke's future role – Steve Waugh

Steve Waugh, the former Australia captain, believes Michael Clarke’s decision to quit the tour of New Zealand will not affect his chances of becoming a Test captain

Cricinfo staff11-Mar-2010Steve Waugh, the former Australia captain, believes Michael Clarke’s decision to quit the tour of New Zealand will not affect his chances of becoming a Test captain. Clarke, currently the Test and ODI vice-captain and Twenty20 captain, returned home on Sunday to sort out his troubled relationship with fiancee Lara Bingle, who is at the centre of a nude photo controversy.Clarke’s sudden departure sparked debate over his suitability to eventually replace Ricky Ponting as Australia’s next Test and one-day captain, with Ian Chappell and Mark Waugh among those questioning his future role. However, Waugh said Clarke’s leadership ambitions should be judged by his performances and not off-the-field incidents.”I hope it doesn’t affect his captaincy, I don’t think it would,” Waugh told the . “Michael has captained the team in the past and I don’t think this would stop that in the future.”Waugh said other Test players had experienced similar situations in the past without leaving the team. “It’s a difficult one, it’s a personal issue,” he said. “If it was for the benefit of the team and Michael then these things have to be negotiated.”Everyone is different, some players like to have their families around them when they are on tour, others prefer solititude. It helps them concentrate on the cricket pitch. It’s important to have a good support network around them, if you have a look at the top players who play for a long time they all have good support.”Clarke has been named in a 14-man squad for the two-Test series against New Zealand later this month, but Michael Brown, Cricket Australia’s general manager of cricket, said he did not know when the batsman would return.”I’ve talked to him over the last few days and we have a Test tour looming,” Brown said. “I would hope he’s part of that group. There is no point in forcing any player to go back into a cricket team when he’s not comfortable because the team won’t be comfortable to have him and that’s the message the captain has given me. Ricky wants Michael back 100% committed to cricket, that’s when he wants him back.”We’ll talk again over the next couple of days and our intention hopefully is to get him back in the side for the Test match.”

Fati limped out against ForestWill be out for three monthsJoins lengthy injury list at BrightonWHAT HAPPENED?

Roberto de Zerbi has been handed a double blow before they face AEK Athens in the Europe League on Thursday as the Spanish forward joined Tariq Lamptey in the treatment room. Fati limped out during the first half at the City Ground during a slender 3-2 win over the Tricky Trees after lasting for just 21 minutes and could be out for three months. He was replaced with Joao Pedro who made the most of the opportunity by scoring a brace for the Seagulls.

AdvertisementWHAT ROBERTO DE ZERBI SAID ABOUT FATI & LAMPTEY

Speaking to reporters ahead of the AEK fixture, De Zerbi informed: "Ansu and Lamptey are both injured. We've lost them for a long time. The focus is on the players who can play tomorrow. We will have enough to compete. I don't know if we will win but we will fight to win the game.”

GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

De Zerbi has several reasons to fight for a win, despite going to Greece with a depleted squad, as three points on Thursday evening might propel them to the top of Group B given Marseille drop points against Ajax. However, it will be a tough task for the Premier League outfit as they will be without Danny Welbeck, Solly March and Pervis Estupinan apart from the recently injured Fati and Lamptey.

USMNT legend to 'mean-spirited bully': Claudio Reyna's reputation deservedly in tatters after investigation reveals years of bad behavior

GOAL breaks down the stunning revelations from U.S. Soccer's report, and what it means for all involved

Claudio Reyna is one of the finest players American soccer has ever produced. That is undisputed. But his legacy and reputation are no longer defined by his stellar playing career. The Google searches won't bring you straight to stories about his on-field heroics or highlights of his best moments.

No, these days, Reyna's legacy is defined by all that's gone on between his family and Gregg Berhalter since the World Cup.

The clash between two of American soccer's most famous families plunged the entire U.S. men's national team into controversy as a decades-old domestic violence incident was dug up as retribution for USMNT and Borussia Dortmund star Gio Reyna's lack of playing time at the World Cup.

Following the results of an independent investigation released on Monday, it's become clear that while Berhalter's own transgressions were an isolated incident that he has publicly apologized for and doesn't deny, Reyna's were an out-of-control pattern that for too long went without discipline.

The report, put together by Alston & Bird, details a number of unsavory allegations about the Reyna family's influence within U.S. Soccer while also revealing a series of events that have seen Claudio Reyna evolve from USMNT hero into, as the report says, a "mean-spirited bully".

GOAL is here to break down the report, the series of incidents involving Reyna and what this all will mean for his reputation and employment going forward.

Getty ImagesWhat we knew

By now, all who follow American soccer know the general story, but it's worth a refresher.

Due to fitness issues, Gio Reyna is given a limited role at the World Cup by USMNT boss Gregg Berhalter, a longtime friend of the Reyna family. The winger doesn't handle it well initially and his effort in training drops. He is eventually given an ultimatum: try harder or go home. He apologizes, returns to the team and continues on.

Meanwhile, his parents, Claudio and Danielle, are unhappy and communicate that. with people around the program, and right after the World Cup, address it again with sporting director Earnie Stewart. During their talks with Stewart, Danielle reveals that Berhalter assaulted his now-wife and then-girlfriend Rosalind during their time at the University of North Carolina, where then-girlfriend Rosalind roomed with Danielle.

An investigation follows, both into the allegations made by the Reynas, the process of Berhalter's hiring and the manner in which those allegations were revealed on the heels of the 2022 World Cup.

Even prior that investigation, the Reynas' reputation had taken a hit, with many seeing them as overbearing parents who wielded a very personal decades-old incident involving two close friends to help their son. But, as it turns out, the family's World Cup actions were just the tip of the iceberg in what has been a longstanding pattern of meddling into their son's career.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe investigation itself

As part of the investigation, Alston & Bird contacted various figures around U.S. Soccer, including the Reynas and the Berhalters. Berhalter, the report says, was very forthcoming, speaking to investigators on the record without legal counsel while helping to facilitate interviews with other persons of interest.

He and his wife acknowledged the incident, which occurred when the two were teenagers.

Both corroborated the fact that Berhalter was immediately remorseful, went to counseling, volunteered and has never done anything similar in all of the years since. It was a mistake that, to this day, still haunts him, he says, but one he didn't run away from once it became public.

By the end, the investigation determined that Berhalter, legally, would not be a risk to remain USMNT head coach – and U.S. Soccer has subsequently kept the door open for him to be brought back.

As for the Reynas, investigators said they were less forthcoming. The report says: "We were less impressed with the Reynas’cooperationduring the investigation."

After several attempts at securing interviews, Danielle Reyna had two brief conversations with investigators, in which she initially denied ever telling Stewart about the Berhalter incident. She called investigators back shortly after and changed her story, detailing a "physical fight".

Claudio Reyna, meanwhile, did not speak to investigators, with the family's attorney instead offering to give a "proffer" of information on their client's behalf.

In the end, Claudio Reyna did not interview with investigators in any way.

Getty'Inappropriate, bullying, mean-spirited'

The investigation says that the 2022 World Cup was far from the first time Reyna tried to use his status with U.S. Soccer to assist his son Gio's career.

The report details a "pattern of outreach" dating back several years, with several unnamed figures revealing incidents involving Claudio Reyna.

One source described Reyna's interactions with those at U.S. Soccer as “inappropriate,” “bullying,” and “mean-spirited", as the legendary midfielder is said to have meddled several times.

In February 2016, the report says, Reyna complained to U.S. Soccer officials about a red card that his son received in a match as he attempted to persuade the federation to overturn the dismissal and allow the midfielder to play in the next game. U.S. Soccer did not overturn the decision.

Stewart said that Reyna began making complaints about his son's playing time within U.S. Soccer as early as 2019, when he reached out to complain about his son's role at the U-17 World Cup. Additionally, Reyna hit out at what he saw as inadequate travel arrangements as his son did not fly business class to join the team.

Stewart told investigators that he has never had similar discussions with other parents.

Berhalter, meanwhile, revealed that he too had received complaints from Reyna during that U-17 World Cup, as his longtime friend texted him to say that then-Under-17 boss Raphael Wicky was "the worst coach". Berhalter also provided the investigation with text messages from 2019 and 2020 that saw Reyna criticize his son's treatment, coaches and travel arrangements.

“When things don’t go great for Gio, [the Reynas] pivot and go into attack mode," Berhalter told investigators.

Noah K. Murray'Can we get real and get male refs?'

Perhaps the most damning revelation from the report details an incident that saw Reyna complain about a female referee following a 2018 match.

“Field, referee everything!! So embarrassing all the way around,” Reyna said in an email before sending a follow-up message that stated: “And in all honest [sic] can we get real and have male refs for a game like this. Its embarrassing guys. What are we trying to prove? A game like this deserves bett[e]r attention."

An unnamed person interviewed by the report circulated the email internally, saying: “This is truly sad to see. I believe we should regroup internally . . . and decide the path we want to take. After this and his communication last week, this is not appropriate or acceptable.”

Manchester City pulled off a coup when they recruited Algeria’s Benarbia from Paris Saint-Germain in 2001, with the North African having won the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award two years previously.

He was influential as the Sky Blues won promotion to the Premier League under Kevin Keegan, but struggled to impose himself in the top flight.

He also represented AS Monaco, Bordeaux and Martigues, and was named Algerian footballer of the year in 2002.

Bony was previously Africa’s most expensive player ever, costing Manchester City £28 million when he moved from Swansea City at the beginning of 2015.

However, he struggled for game time due to injuries and increased competition from Sergio Aguero and Iheanacho, and departed on a season-long loan to Stoke City on transfer deadline day as his Etihad Stadium career came to an end.

He subsequently moved back to Swansea City, and is currently with Eredivisie club NEC Nijmegen.

Adebayor has often been a polarising figure in world football.

It seems that, as soon as he starts to get the fans on his side, he does something that conjures up the ire of his supporters.

He has represented a host of high-profile clubs, including Spanish giants Real Madrid and Arsenal, among others, and departed the Gunners for Manchester City in 2009 for a fee believed to be about £25 million, making him, at one point, Africa's most expensive player.

He remained at the Etihad Stadium until 2011, when he joined Tottenham Hotspur.
