Manchester United: Fans react to reports that Edinson Cavani is in talks to sign on a free transfer

Many Manchester United fans have reacted to a claim from talkSPORT that Edinson Cavani is in talks to move to Old Trafford.

The 33-year-old Uruguayan striker is now a free agent after spending seven years with Ligue 1 side Paris Saint Germain.

Finishing his spell at Parc des Princes, the 116-cap international netted an impressive 200 goals in 301 games for PSG, and his future is now being discussed with a recent report linking him with a move to Old Trafford.

United have struggled to sign players in this transfer window, bringing in just Donny van de Beek from Dutch giants Ajax. With the window coming to a close on Monday evening, talks over a deal for Cavani to become the next new face at the club are said to be progressing.

Cavani’s potential arrival to United would hand Solskjaer another option in attack, joining the likes of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial, Odion Ighalo and Daniel James.

His arrival at the club may have echoes of the 2014 signing of another South American striker in Radamel Falcao, who scored abundantly in Europe before moving to Old Trafford. However, he failed to impress in Manchester, netting just four times in 29 games for the club.

Here we take a look at some of the reaction from United fans via talkSPORT’s tweet, where they were asked to provide a rating out of 10 on the potential signing…

Philip Billing will be too expensive for West Brom

West Brom have a big transfer window ahead of them as they look to build a squad capable of remaining in the Premier League next season.

The Baggies looked fantastic for the majority of 2019/20, but their drop off in form at the end of the season almost cost them promotion and highlighted the frailties in their side.

Fortunately, the financial windfall that comes with being promoted to the top-flight will allow the Baggies to bolster the positions that they want to strengthen.

Watch West Bromwich Albion Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

However, their resources are not limitless and one player that Steve Madeley believes would fit the bill at the Baggies would be too expensive.

What’s been said then?

Madeley stated in his Athletic column that Bilic may be looking towards a midfielder, claiming that Phillip Billing would fit the bill of what he is looking for, but the finances involved make that deal unlikely.

“Philip Billing, who has Premier League experience with both Huddersfield and Bournemouth, would fit the bill but the latter paid £15 million for him after the Yorkshire club went down a year ago and, should they be intent on recovering much of their outlay now they have also been relegated, he will be too expensive,” he wrote.

Bullet dodged, but worrying

Billing being out of West Brom’s price range could be a good thing, considering the fact that the midfielder has been relegated in each of his past two seasons, but the fact that he is too expensive for them is slightly worrying.

Bournemouth reportedly want to recoup a lot of the £15m they spent on Billing, but after earning over £100m alongside promotion, that should be something of a drop in the ocean for the Baggies rather than a massive hurdle.

We’ll have to see how much the Midlands club spend this summer, but if they’re struggling to spend £15m on a player, they may have to rely on a number of bargains.

West Ham United: Fans rage over club’s reported stance on Grady Diangana

A number of West Ham supporters were fuming over the reported reason as to why Grady Diangana’s transfer to West Brom was sanctioned.

The 22-year-old, who was on loan with the Baggies last season, completed a permanent transfer worth £18m to The Hawthorns, which led to Hammers captain Mark Noble voicing his anger over the sale on social media.

According to The Athletic, the Irons believe that the £18m deal, along with a 20% sell-on fee, represents goods business for a player who is unproven in the Premier League, in which Diangana has made just 17 appearances (11 as a substitute).

However, the winger played his part in getting West Brom promoted to the top flight last term, with eight goals and seven assists in 30 league matches. Michail Antonio was the only Hammers player with a higher goal tally in 2019/20, while nobody in David Moyes’ squad set up more than five goals (as per TransferMarkt).

These West Ham fans on Twitter were livid over the club’s apparent reasoning for selling the 22-year-old, with one supporter lamenting “the irony of this” and sniping that much-maligned club owners David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady are “unproven in the Premier League”. Since the former two took control of the club in 2010, the Hammers have only once finished higher than 10th in the top flight and spent one season in the Championship (as per TransferMarkt).

Chelsea: Price slash on Kalidou Koulibaly could see Blues reignite their interest

Parties interested in Kalidou Koulibaly (including Chelsea) have been handed a boost after Napoli have slashed his price tag significantly.

According to The Mirror, the centre-back’s asking price has fallen from £80m to £65m, which could be crucial for those chasing his signature.

Premier League clubs Manchester City and Liverpool have both been linked with Koulibaly as they look to bolster their defensive options ahead of next season. Even the likes of Everton have earmarked the Senegal international as a potential summer target (via Liverpool ECHO).

The Mirror’s report claimed that Pep Guardiola is on the market for a central defender and Koulibaly fits the bill. City are reportedly looking to find the perfect partner for Aymeric Laporte as they look to snatch back their Premier League crown next season.

However, with Chelsea already spending big this summer, they could resurrect their interest in the 29-year-old. According to Dean Jones of Bleacher Report back in February, the Blues were considering a move for Napoli’s star defender but his price tag poured cold water on their interest.

Lampard has consistently rotated his two central defenders as he tries to find out the perfect combination. He has already added Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner to the squad, with Kai Havertz another big name linked to a potential move. Signing Koulibaly would be another huge step towards a strong finish next season.

Bayer Leverkusen have valued Havertz at £90m and it looks as though Chelsea are willing to pay that sum. With the news of Koulibaly’s price tag slashed, it could be too tempting a deal to not revisit their interest.

Strengthening their attack and adding a highly-rated defender to their ranks could see the Blues strongly challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Jose Mourinho would be the man to change Tottenham’s mentality

Tottenham seem to be at a crossroads at the moment. They don’t have their new stadium yet, they crashed out of two competitions in a week, and some of their players are being linked away from the club.

What’s worse is that manager Mauricio Pochettino could well be leaving the club soon, not only due to the interest from rival clubs, but because he may be growing bored of the lack of trophies and progress Tottenham seem to be making.

One man that could bring a completely radical new approach to Tottenham is former Man United boss José Mourinho. Now we are not saying that the Portuguese is going to join Tottenham, or even linked with a move to north London, but it is a possibility that Daniel Levy may need to think about should his current manager leave.

This would be a controversial call, as Mourinho is a very divisive figure, but here are the pros and cons of Mourinho joining Tottenham:

Pros Status

Whether he is popular or not, there is no denying that Mourinho is one of, if not the most well-known manager in the world.

If Tottenham were able to attract the Portuguese to their club, it would send a huge message to the rest of the world. Some fans would even argue that they would suddenly be put in the same conversation as Chelsea, Man United, Real Madrid and Inter Milan- all European Giants that Mourinho has managed.

This would be a very good move for Tottenham’s global appeal.

Track record

Pochettino has made Tottenham into one of the most attractive teams to watch in England, and indeed Europe. He has overseen some very successful performances and seasons as a whole but there is one glaring blemish on his career so far and that is his lack of a trophy. He has made it to semi finals and indeed a League Cup final, but still has nothing.

Mourinho is almost stylistically the opposite of the Argentinian, creating boring and defensive teams to some, but he has undeniably had a lot of success. He could bring a winning mentality that Spurs have perhaps lacked in recent years.

At every club he has been with, he has got silverware which to many Tottenham fans is all they may want. He could be the missing piece in their puzzle and toughen up a traditionally fragile team.

Cons Man management

For a long time there was no questioning the methods and style of Mourinho as it was hard to criticise a manager that had been successful in every club and country he had managed in.

But he started to turn a few heads with Man United, particularly regarding his man management.

He fell out with a number of players and oversaw a drastic drop in form by many of them. This was surely one of the leading factors in his sacking and he now has a job to prove that he is not a negative effect on others.

On the other hand, Pochettino has a great rapport with all his players and any senior figure at Tottenham will be wary of the Portuguese’s arrival.

Outdated

There were also questions during Mourinho’s spell at Man United whether he was becoming outdated as a manager. As teams like Man City, Liverpool and Tottenham play progressive football, Mourinho’s Man United look like they were from a different era.

Perhaps he is past his sell by date and Tottenham would not want to risk devastating a team that play so positively under Pochettino.

Verdict

Given the way that Mourinho tarnished his reputation at Man United, this is a risk that Levy should avoid. Whether fans agree with Mourinho or Paul Pogba after their ongoing feud, it is an environment that Tottenham just cannot afford to create.

That being said, Tottenham do need to look to a manager like the Portuguese in terms of their winning mentality if the situation does arise when they need a new manager. But this is a potential disaster they should avoid.

Messi was not on target in a U.S. Open Cup semi-final clash with FC Cincinnati, but he did provide two assists – including one deep into stoppage-time – before seeing Inter Miami prevail on penalties to set up a final showdown with the Houston Dynamo.

WHAT THEY SAID

Martino was full of praise for Messi following another match-altering contribution in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Cincinnati, with the Argentine coach saying of his fellow countryman: “He has a response for every moment, no matter the circumstances. And today he showed it more as a conductor and not a finisher, and you saw that with the pass late in the match [to Leonardo Campana]. He makes difficult plays look easy. It was an assist of a super crack.”

Martinelli shines but where was Jesus? Brazil winners, losers and ratings as Aboubakar and Cameroon provide latest World Cup upset

The tournament of shocks delivered again as Cameroon left it late to secure a famous win over the World Cup favourites, who are still without Neymar.

Not even Brazil are safe in this tournament of upsets.

After Argentina, Germany, Belgium, France and Spain came this latest shock. It didn't cost the Selecao too much, but this 1-0 defeat to Cameroon provided another memorable World Cup moment, and raises questions as to whether Tite's side really should be considered favourites.

Vincent Aboubakar's 92nd-minute header secured victory for Cameroon, though it was not enough to secure them qualification to the last 16 due to Switzerland's win over Serbia. Still, this was a famous win for the Indomitable Lions, one to go alongside their famous humbling of Argentina in 1990.

Brazil, in fairness, were already sure of qualification – they will face South Korea in the last 16 – and so made nine changes to their starting line-up. But they lost another player, Alex Telles, to injury and coach Tite is still waiting for his vaunted array of attackers to fire.

Gabriel Martinelli, the Arsenal forward, was the best on show here, but Brazil wasted a host of chances before being caught by Aboubakar's late sucker punch.

Here, GOAL runs through the winners and losers in Doha…

GettyThe Winners

Gabriel Martinelli:

Jurgen Klopp once called Martinelli 'the talent of the century', and it looks like this will be the year we all understand what he meant.

The Arsenal man was one of nine players drafted into Tite's starting XI, with qualification for the last 16 already taken care of. And while some – his Gunners teammate Gabriel Jesus, for example – did little to boost their chances of further involvement, Martinelli played like a man determined to give his manager food for thought.

He's so direct, so positive, and his speed and control made him a nightmare for Collins Fai, the Cameroon right-back, who could do little about his forward raids down the left.

Three times, he forced saves from goalkeeper Devis Epassy, and time and again he carried the ball into dangerous areas, never disheartened when things didn't fall his way.

With Vinicius Junior firmly established as Tite's first-choice on the left, he'll do well to get another start in this tournament, but don't be surprised if he makes a huge impact off the bench at some point. This is a player who, as Klopp predicted, is going right to the top.

Dani Alves:

The future may be bright, but there's always space for a bit of nostalgia at a World Cup, and it came here in the form of the greatest right-back of the modern era.

At 39 years and 210 days, Alves became the oldest player ever to feature in a World Cup game for Brazil. This was his 125th cap, his debut having come in 2006, and a reminder to everyone that there really is no substitute for experience, professionalism and commitment when it comes to top-level football.

He isn't, of course, the marauding presence of Sevilla or Barcelona – he plays his football in Mexico these days, and hasn't played too much of it due to injury of late – but full credit to him for still being capable of performing at this level.

What a career he's had, and it may yet have a golden finale too.

Vincent Aboubakar:

Well, at least you can say he left the World Cup in memorable fashion.

What a header the Cameroon captain produced to win this game in the second minute of added time. Aboubakar, who had already provided one of the moments of the tournament with his scooped finish against Serbia, timed his run perfectly to meet Jerome Ngom Mbekeli's delicious right-wing cross, leaving Ederson rooted to the spot as his effort flew into the bottom corner.

It was a goal worthy of winning any game, and one which secured a famous, if ultimately fruitless, victory for Cameroon. Aboubakar removed his shirt in celebration, earning a second yellow card in the process. A bit daft, but it won't cost him too much as it turns out, as Switzerland's win over Serbia ensured it is they, rather than the Indomitable Lions, who progress to the knockout stage.

AdvertisementGettyThe Losers

Alex Telles:

The tears of a man who knows his World Cup is over? It certainly looked like it.

After Neymar and Danilo, Brazil have another injury to deal with after Telles, their back-up left-back, was forced from the field early in the second half here.

The 29-year-old suffered the problem in a mid-air collision while defending a corner, and having initially tried to play on, was in obvious distress as he was forced to admit defeat.

This was his first start of the tournament, having begun it as understudy to Alex Sandro. It would be a surprise if we saw him again. His face said it all here.

Gabriel Jesus:

Jesus' face said it all as he made his way to the sideline. An opportunity missed, for sure.

There has been much debate as to who should be Brazil's No.9, but Richarlison can sleep easy tonight after the Arsenal man failed to seize his big chance.

Jesus, who is still without a goal in seven World Cup appearances, was not especially poor, he just didn't really influence proceedings. He always works and his movement is always sharp, but Brazil's threat came via their wingers, leaving their centre-forward cutting a frustrated figure throughout a goalless first half.

His number went up early in the second, and there was a rueful look as he was replaced by Pedro, a 25-year-old who plays his club football with Flamengo. Having waited for his opportunity, Jesus will wish he did more with it.

Cameroon:

You had to feel for Rigobert Song and his players. Having given so much, and pulled off a famous victory, they left the Lusail Iconic Stadium dejected, their World Cup dreams dashed for another four years.

They left their mark on this tournament of course. Their fightback against Serbia was thrilling, and they competed superbly here against the No.1 ranked team in the world.

But their slow start has ultimately cost them. Their passiveness in defeat to Switzerland was hard to explain, and it is that which has led to their elimination. No wonder they looked so devastated at the final whistle here.

GettyBrazil Ratings: Defence

Ederson (6/10):

Alert in the first half to push away Mbeumo's header, and fielded Ntcham's long-range strike well after the break. Helpless to stop Aboubakar's winner. Distribution high-class, as ever.

Dani Alves (6/10):

Minimal fuss from the 39-year-old, who had more touches and contested more duels than anyone else on the field.

Eder Militao (7/10):

Looks a class act whether at right-back or centre-back. Pace and strength, and almost made the breakthrough from a set-piece.

Gleison Bremer (6/10):

Excellent in possession and positionally excellent until undone by a superb cross in stoppage time.

Alex Telles (6/10):

Caught under the ball for Mbeumo's chance. Otherwise assured before suffering an injury early in the second half which forced him off in tears.

Fabinho (6/10):

Mopped up well in midfield and kept things ticking over with short, smart passes. Got through loads of work.

Fred (6/10):

Played some nice diagonals, including which set up a chance for Martinelli. Brazil lost a bit of energy when he went off.
