FIVE Andy Carroll alternatives for West Ham

It’s to no one’s great surprise that Andy Carroll is injured again. Not only that, but the striker will miss the next four months, returning sometime around November, though you’d be brave to bet on that.

West Ham, in the meantime, will be in need of plugging that gap and bringing in someone who can work effectively in the Premier League until the striker’s return.

The club have already brought in Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate, but between them they have half-a-season’s worth of experience in the English top flight. Bringing in someone already based in the Premier League should be a must.

Here is a rundown of five options to replace Andy Carroll in the West Ham squad.

[/ffc-gallery]

Danny Welbeck

Danny Welbeck’s future at Manchester United isn’t really in danger or any great doubt, but the striker hasn’t done enough to be a regular in the team’s starting XI, failing to hit the back of the net with the regularity that’s expected of him.

Welbeck could be the perfect short-term answer for West Ham. The England international is good enough to be a starter in Sam Allardyce’s team, with the versatility and work rate to be deployed anywhere across the front line.

Welbeck could have a good career at Old Trafford, but now he really does need to develop further as a forward. A loan move would suit all parties.

Jordan Rhodes

There are surely some who are still waiting for Jordan Rhodes to make the step up from the Championship to the Premier League.

The Scotland international has scored over 20 goals in each of his two seasons with Blackburn and very much looks capable of producing in the top flight.

West Ham will find trouble in negotiating with Blackburn, who will not want to lose their star forward. But while it is a gamble, if Sam Allardyce can land the 24-year-old, it could pay off in a big way.

Nicklas Bendtner

Nicklas Bendtner is currently a free agent after seeing his contract at Arsenal expire. The Dane hasn’t the best of reputations in England, but that’s largely due to his off-field actions.

Bendtner may have frustrated Arsenal supporters in the past, but his form for Denmark has generally been very good – and that’s what his next club will need to unlock, the consistency to perform effectively at the highest level.

The Dane would be a good signing for West Ham, provided they can get round his wage demands. Bendtner is a good footballer who, on his day, can produce far more than many of the mid-table strikers currently in the league.

Connor Wickham

Connor Wickham arrived at Sunderland in 2011 with plenty of promise, but hasn’t featured as much as many would have expected over the past few seasons, seeing a couple of loan moves during that period.

But most would have been reminded that he still plays for the club during their stunning run of form at the end of last season, in which the 21-year-old scored against Manchester City and Chelsea.

Wickham wouldn’t be a bad shout for West Ham this summer, even as a loan signing from now until January.

Marouane Fellaini

Marouane Fellaini doesn’t look to have a future at Manchester United with Louis van Gaal now in charge. The Belgian international had a hugely disappointing season at the club last term and will more than likely be shown the door at some stage this summer.

Even though he isn’t a striker, he’d be a perfect replacement for Andy Carroll at West Ham, with experience of having played in an advanced role during his Everton days.

Fellaini ticks all the boxes of a typical Sam Allardyce signing, and if the club can get a loan move off the ground at the very least, he should be able to kick start his career, which is currently going nowhere at Old Trafford.

Ryan Bertrand comments suggest Mark Hughes may have convinced him to stay

In an interview he conducted with Sky Sports News on Thursday, Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand, rated at £18m by Transfermarkt, has hinted that the club’s late season turnaround could mean that he chooses to stay next season.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Bertrand has been linked with moves to the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in recent weeks, with his four-season spell with the south coast outfit looking set to end whichever division they found themselves in next term.

That may well have had something to do with disappointing campaigns under Claude Puel and Mauricio Pellegrino where Saints looked to be going backwards, but the revival under Mark Hughes in recent weeks could yet convince the stand-in captain to stay.

Speaking about their battle against the drop to Sky Sports News, Bertrand said: “It was kind of like a wake-up call that maybe we needed as a whole and hopefully we can analyse all of those things and hopefully move on again next season.”

How has Bertrand done this season?

Like many of his Southampton teammates, he hasn’t reached anywhere near the same level as he has in previous campaigns.

The 28-year-old hasn’t been as solid defensively or provided as much of an attacking threat as he has done before this term, although he has stood up and been counted in recent weeks having been given the captain’s armband in the absence of the injured Steven Davis.

The England international would have been furious with himself – as his own fans were with him on Twitter – at Goodison Park last weekend when his poor clearance eventually led to a last-gasp equaliser for Everton, but he bounced back well with a strong display in the crucial 1-0 win against Swansea City on Tuesday night.

Will he stay this summer?

Southampton will certainly hope so, and it may well depend on who their new manager is going to be, and the ambition that the club are ready to show in the transfer market.

His comments certainly suggest that he is already thinking about next season, but on the other hand if the south coast outfit do receive an acceptable offer for the 28-year-old from one of the top Premier League clubs, they may be unlikely to stand in the way of the left-back’s chance to play in the Champions League and compete for titles.

Harry Wilson would give Leeds strike-force the fear factor next season

Leeds United are interested in signing Liverpool winger Harry Wilson on loan, according to the Yorkshire Post.

What’s the story?

21-year-old Wilson spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull City where he enjoyed a successful spell, scoring seven and assisting three goals in 13 appearances for the Tigers.

The tricky winger took Gareth Bale’s record of the youngest player to ever play for Wales and is considered a potential star of the future.

According to the report, Leeds will have to see off unnamed Premier League interest in Wilson who is valued at £900,000 on Transfermarkt.

A real coup for Leeds

In his brief spell at Hull, Wilson showed he has real talent that belies his young age.

He runs directly at defenders and has a great end product as well, as shown by his strong goal and assist ratio.

He would inject real pace into the Leeds side and would be a very exciting prospect to watch embarrass Championship defences next season.

Rangers cannot entertain prospect of Alan Pardew taking over at Ibrox

The international break is the perfect opportunity for Rangers to take a breather and make vital decisions regarding their future. The departure of Pedro Caixinha happened in such a blur, with important matches coming quickly after, that thoughts of who would replace the Portuguese had to be put aside to allow caretaker boss Graeme Murty to focus on picking up points.

It’s still a job that can attract ambitious managers looking to make their mark on British football. Rangers are a big club, with a massive fanbase and a budget that should allow them to be a force in Scotland. A variety of names have been linked with the vacant position, from Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes to former England manager Steve McClaren and many in between.

One name that sparked a lot of speculation was Alan Pardew, who The Daily Mail reported he was actually in contact with the Scottish giants via his representatives about potentially taking over in the wake of Caixinha’s departure. The paper say that McInnes requires a £1m compensation fee, meaning he might be unavailable to the Light Blues, opening the door for the likes of Pardew to take over.

With no further word this week about who will be taking charge at Ibrox, that sort of link should be worrying indeed for Rangers fans. Giving  Alan Pardew the job would be a dreadful move, exactly the kind of manager they should be looking to avoid as they enter a new era. This is the most important appointment at the club in recent years and it’s vitally important they get it right.

Lacking credibility

Rangers don’t need managers with baggage and Alan Pardew has plenty of that. Having just gone through a period of off the pitch drama with Pedro Caixinha, from bizarre press conferences to touchline confrontations with rivals, the Light Blues should be looking for a manager who can rise above all that and focus on winning football matches. Pardew has a history of making headlines for all the wrong reasons, from headbutting players to bizarre criticisms of rival managers.

In the goldfish bowl of football in Glasgow, does he have the personality to cope with what is one of the most pressurised jobs in football? If the press liked fanning the flames with Caixinha, they’d absolutely love doing it with Pardew, knowing that headlines would be hear across Britian and not just north of the border. If he thinks his actions are scrutinised at clubs like Crystal Palace, it’s nothing compared the spotlight that is put on you as manager of either Celtic or Rangers.

The fans need an inspirational leader who will take a pragmatic approach to life at Ibrox both on and off the pitch and frankly Pardew lacks credibility in both regards. His last year at Palace rapidly unravelled, with his side drawn into battles that make excellent Match Of The Day fodder, but which would be a nightmare for a team who need stability and progression.

Premier League temptation

Names like Alan Pardew and Steve McClaren must be tempting indeed for decision makers at Ibrox. They are both managers who have experience of managing teams in the English Premier League, a division with a reputation as the pinnacle of club football management. They both have a profile beyond most of the managers that will be looking at the Ibrox position.

Across the city in Glasgow, Celtic appointed a manager with dwindling reputation in England that proved to be the most inspired appointment in recent Scottish football history, wouldn’t a name like Pardew similarly work out at Ibrox?

The truth is though, the last thing Rangers need is an ego who sees the Light Blues as a chance to keep themselves in the headlines. They need an up and coming boss, not one whose day has come and gone.

Most important of all, they need someone who focuses on football, the product on the pitch and someone who knows Scottish football like the back of their hand. For too long Rangers have dabbled in experiments, now they need to bank on a sure bet with a proven track record of delivering in the Scottish Premiership. Alan Pardew is about as far from that as imaginable.

Yony González achou Gilberto, bateu, o goleiro Rafael espalmou, Everaldo pegou o rebote e Luciano, de letra, colocou o 2 a 0 a favor do Fluminense no marcador. Lindo gol!

Finch stuns England with blazing 156

Aaron Finch, the 26-year-old Victorian, ransacked England’s bowling with an eye-popping world record 156 as Australia secured their first victory in any format for 200 days.

The Report by Andrew McGlashan at the Ageas Bowl29-Aug-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAaron Finch blazed a trail from ball one•AFP

Whether Australia can produce young batsmen who are able to occupy the crease in Test cricket remains up for debate. That they can produce batsmen who give it an almighty thump there is no doubt. Aaron Finch, the 26-year-old Victorian, ransacked England’s bowling with an eye-popping world record 156 as Australia secured their first victory in any format for 200 days.It was a ferocious display of hitting from Finch, who had six previous T20 caps, as he tore England’s attack to shreds with a brutal display, in the process going well past Brendon McCullum’s 123 as the highest score in an international Twenty20. Australia’s eventual 248 for 6 was the second-highest total in a T20 international – and the highest in a match involving two Test nations – only Sri Lanka’s 260 against Kenya was out of reach and for a while it appeared they may cross that landmark too.A couple of weeks ago in the Friends Life t20 quarter-final there was 200-plays-200 match and the consistency of the one-day pitches at the Ageas Bowl deserves much praise – 457 runs in 40 overs is value for money, even if to watch such a boundary-fest all the time would dull the senses. But to chase 249 would have bordered on miracle territory. England, not surprisingly, could not get close – although did pass 200 for only the fourth time in a T20 – despite Joe Root’s entertaining 90 off 49 balls. Tellingly, perhaps, England could only manage five sixes to Australia’s 18.Fourteen of those came off Finch’s bat, another of the records that he broke during the onslaught. He began with a six first ball, picked up effortlessly off Steven Finn, and it was a theme that would continue throughout. Each of Finch’s landmarks came up with a six; his half-century, from 26 balls; his hundred, off 47, beating McCullum’s record, and his 150.He was on track to beat Richard Levi’s 45-ball hundred against New Zealand, in Hamilton, as the fastest on the international stage but after reducing himself to a couple of singles had to settle for second spot when he launched his 47th delivery, from Stuart Broad, for another six. He was the first Australian to make a Twenty20 international hundred and it took him just 13 more deliveries to power past 150. By then, it had long since stopped being an even contest. The bowlers had no answers, although not for the first time there was an absence of yorkers – anything fractionally off target was dispatched over the boundaries with strength, timing and, occasionally, some finesse; although this was not an innings of deft touch and placement. Finch’s sixes over the off side, one struck as he slid outside leg stump, were perhaps the most breathtaking.Picking through the wreckage of England’s figures may seem a rather pointless task, but there are a couple of overs that stand out. Root’s only over cost 27 – he made the mistake of conceding a single to Shaun Marsh first ball – and Danny Briggs, on his home ground, was taken for 23 in his last, all by Finch. Following on from Martin Guptill’s huge innings in the one-day international here earlier in the season, this is not a favourite ground for England at the moment. The only England bowler to have an economy rate in single figures was Jade Dernbach, which itself will bring surprise from many. He finally removed Finch and also dumbfounded Shane Watson with a back-of-the-hand slower ball after his 37 off 16 balls, in a stand of 99 in seven overs, had gone almost unnoticed.Finch and Marsh had added 114 in nine overs for the second wicket having come together early following David Warner’s bizarre dismissal. Swinging with all his power, he top edged Broad’s second ball and, in the process, lost his bat which flew towards short fine-leg while Jos Buttler settled under the catch. Warner then had to walk back to collect his bat from an obliging England player who had picked it up. It was the high point of the innings for England. But the crowd had another moment to savour. The opening over of the chase, bowled by the much-missed (at least by the England supporters) Mitchell Johnson, cost 17 and included two wides and three boundaries. Johnson, though, recovered from those early problems by trapping Michael Lumb lbw and then having Eoin Morgan caught at point while he touched 93mph on the speed gun.But Josh Hazlewood created the most physical damage. Root needed treatment for a cut lip after a short ball from Hazlewood squeezed between his peak and grille. Warner, who had come close to inflicting something similar earlier in the tour, was the first Australian to go up to Root who, after a few minutes, did not seem overly troubled by the blow as he notched a 29-ball fifty and he later took 16 off Johnson’s last over much to the joy of the fans who stayed on to the bitter end.In the seventh over there was also a significant moment. Fawad Ahmed, the legspinner, delivered his first international over. It went for 10 and his four overs ended up costing 43. It was not really an evening to be a spinner. His story remains a remarkable one but, for one night at least, it was trumped.
