Stuart Law has been confirmed as the new high performance coach of Australia’s Centre of Excellence (COE). Law stepped down from his role as coach of Bangladesh on Monday and his new position will allow him to be based in his home city of Brisbane, where he will be a key assistant to Troy Cooley, the head coach of the COE.The high performance coach position is a new role that stemmed from the Argus review into Australia’s performance. The job involves helping Cooley to provide tactical and technical support and development for Australia’s cricketers in both state and national programmes, and Law said he was passionate about developing young players.”The opportunity to return home to be closer with family and work in Brisbane with Australia’s established and emerging talent was too good to pass up,” Law said. “As a member of the first intake of the former Cricket Academy, I’m a passionate believer in the COE and look forward to … [delivering] programs that will develop and prepare players for the challenge of achieving sustained international success.Law, who played one Test and 54 ODIs for Australia, and 367 first-class matches in a career spanning 20 years, will start his new role after he completes his notice period with Bangladesh. The COE manager, Belinda Clark, said Law’s experience as both a player and a coach would make him a valuable acquisition.”Stuart is a current international coach with recent demonstrable success and we’re fortunate to have secured his services in the Australian Cricket landscape,” Clark said. “He has experienced success with two international teams, periods that included an ICC Cricket World Cup final appearance with Sri Lanka in 2011 and Bangladesh’s first Asia Cup final last month.”His knowledge of the sub-continent and England, and his experience with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, will bring a global perspective to the COE.”Edited by Brydon Coverdale

Surrey slate Lord's pitch after narrow derby defeat

Surrey once again departed Lord’s glum-faced after another defeat. Their record is miserable over the Thames – one win in their last 18 visits. They turned on the wicket as the primary cause of this loss: a soft pitch, perhaps underprepared after poor weather in the days before the match, which created havoc for the 76 overs the final two innings lasted.Chris Adams, Surrey’s team director, described it as the worst pitch he had ever seen at Lord’s. Surrey, in pursuit of 141, lost 6 for 36 to fail by three runs – Surrey’s narrowest margin of defeat to their neighbours.Victory here was envisaged as part of their early-season run to confirm them as many people’s outside tip for the title. Sussex, Middlesex and Worcestershire – with two of those games at The Oval – are the three opponents many would pick out for early-season points. But they were left stunned by their final morning collapse.”It was one of the worst wickets I’ve played on,” Surrey’s captain Rory Hamilton-Brown said. “It went up and down, the seam movement was so exaggerated, people were getting hit and two first-class sides scored not many more than a hundred. It made for a battle out there.”Hamilton-Brown is grateful for a quick return to The Oval next week where Surrey should bounce back against Worcestershire. But his victorious Middlesex counterpart did not see the surface as a hindrance to playing good cricket.”It was one of those wickets you knew there was something in it all game,” Neil Dexter said. “The pitch lasted almost the four days so to be playing on that wicket early season I don’t think was too bad. The way they got out this morning had nothing to do with the wicket, it was the shots and some good bowling.”The victory song in the home dressing room wasn’t quite by Dexy’s Midnight Runners but Middlesex’s “Dexy” – of no pop music fame – was certainly declaring: “I’m in heaven, I’m in heaven” after a miraculous victory. The celebrations probably sent the MCC secretary straight to his inkwell. Tim Murtagh has a history of wild abandon after sealing big wins – once whipping off his shirt to acclaim his success in a T20 quarter-final bowlout for Surrey against Warwickshire at The Oval. Here his fourth wicket sparked a 50-yard sprint towards the Tavern, creating a heap of elated Middlesex bodies on the Lord’s turf.”I think I’ve been watching too much football recently, but that’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever had on a cricket field,” said Murtagh, a Liverpool supporter, of what he described as his best win for Middlesex. “It would have been a great shame to lose two games having played decent cricket in both. We have had two collapses in both games but we’ve showed unbelievable fighting spirit.”Middlesex would have begun to move a little uneasily with consecutive defeats and a powerful Durham side arriving next week. This victory is an early fillip for their survival hopes. And they have Andrew Strauss and Steven Finn against Durham, causing a selection headache. Dexter said he will feel bad leaving out players who have done little wrong.None of the bowlers deserved to be dropped. On the final morning, Gareth Berg took two wickets; Tim Murtagh bowled Chris Jordan and took the final wicket; Toby Roland-Jones removed Tim Linley caught at slip and had Hamilton-Brown caught behind.Hamilton-Brown sought to blast his way through the dangers of a seaming ball and varying bounce. His 49-ball half-century was the most aggressive innings of the match. But he watched Tom Maynard, for the addition of three, and Gareth Batty, for a duck, depart as the task of 46 more runs lurched from the formality it was proving the previous evening to a stern examination of technique and guts. Had bad light not intervened on Saturday evening, Surrey may well have claimed the extra half hour that would have allowed Hamilton-Brown and Maynard, both free scoring, to knock off the runs. The small chase was created by Jon Lewis’ five wickets the previous afternoon – the spell of the match. His 17-ball 21 looked to be the late-order innings Surrey needed but he could only look to the heavens as Hamilton-Brown edged Roland-Jones, who was excellent from the Pavilion End, to the wicketkeeper John Simpson. Lewis was then too trusting of Nos. 10 and 11; leaving Linley the entire 38th over to face from Roland-Jones. He nicked the fifth ball to slip. Lewis then offered Jade Dernbach the chance of five balls from Tim Murtagh. A straight-drive gone wrong skied the winning catch to Sam Robson at cover.

Cobb refused BPL clearance by Leicestershire

Leicestershire have declined Josh Cobb’s request to go and play in the Bangladesh Premier League

Leicestershire have declined Josh Cobb’s request to go and play in the Bangladesh Premier League.Cobb, who took the Man-of-the-Match award in final of the Friends Life t20 in 2011, had been offered an opportunity to replace the injured Chris Gayle in the Barisal Burners squad. But Leicestershire have refused to issue a No Objection Certificate – the paperwork necessary to release Cobb to play – citing the player’s fitness as the obstacle. Cobb underwent minor surgery to remove a cyst on his knee last month.Leicestershire’s decision resulted in 21-year-old Cobb, who recently signed a contract extension that will keep him with the club until the end of the 2013 season, unleashing a frustrated response on his Facebook page. “Not great for morale when your club won’t let you go to the Bangladesh Premier League to replace Chris Gayle,” he wrote. The post was subsequently deleted. Cobb’s tweet on the issue was more mundane. “Absolutely gutted not to be able to go and play for the Barisal Burners in the BPL!! Looking a great tournament,” he posted.”I can understand him being a bit upset,” Leicestershire chief executive Mike Siddall said. “In normal circumstances we would be quite happy for him to go. We don’t want to stand in the way of a player if opportunity knocks.”But Josh had knee surgery over the winter and the club have made the decision that he is not quite fit enough. I’m sure he feels – as any young man would – that there is not much wrong with him, but it’s our responsibility to care for his long-term future in the game.”This is an important year for Josh and Leicestershire. We were bottom of Division Two of the championship by miles last year and part of the reasons was that we didn’t score enough runs. We want to make sure he is fully fit to play a big part for us this year.”Meanwhile Russell Cobb, the father of Josh and coach to the Leicestershire youth sides, is expected to be appointed the new director of cricket at Loughborough MCC University. He will be succeeding Graham Dilley, who died in October, in the role.Cobb, 50, has been at Leicestershire for more than 30 years. After a career as a top-order batsman, he took on a coaching role and has helped in the development of such players as Stuart Broad, Luke Wright, James Taylor and Nathan Buck.

T&T and Leewards win with ease

Kevon Cooper picked up three wickets in T&T’s comfortable win over Guyana•Randy Brooks/West Indies Cricket Board

Trinidad and Tobago picked up their second win of the Caribbean T20, beating Guyana comfortably by seven wickets at North Sound. Medium-pacer Kevon Cooper picked up three wickets after T&T chose to field, and was supported in an economical spell from Dwayne Bravo, who grabbed two wickets for 10 runs in three overs. The pair helped keep Guyana to 101 for 9. Openers Sewnarine Chattergoon and Trevon Griffith got starts and were involved in a 35-run stand, and Narsingh Deronarine remained unbeaten on 26 but the persistent fall of wickets at the other end meant Guyana could not manage a competitive enough score.Barring Adrian Barath, who fell early in the chase, the T&T batsmen batted steadily to overhaul the Guyana score with 17 balls to spare. Lendl Simmons made a quick 30, Darren Bravo made a patient 22, Dwayne Bravo managed 18 and Kieron Pollard finished it off with 21, striking two sixes in his unbeaten knock.

Canada slipped to their second straight defeat, losing to Leeward Islands, who opened their account this tournament, at North Sound. Canada’s batsmen could not capitalise after opting to bat, though their openers, Hiral Patel and Zubin Sarkari, had laid a good foundation by adding 34. But wickets fell regularly after that, and they soon slipped to 60 for 5. Raza-ur-Rehman made 30 at No.6 and Hamza Tariq supported him in a 30-run stand, and Canada were able to limp to towards 108. Seamer Gavin Tonge took three wickets on his birthday, supported by Justin Athanaze and Larry Joseph, who picked up two each. The chase was a breeze for Leewards. Opener Kieran Powell led the way with an unbeaten 42and No.3 batsman Javier Liburd made a quick 33, off 25 balls. The win was secured in just 13.4 overs.

Pakistan fight back on curtailed day

Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim frustrated Pakistan in a truncated morning session, but the visitors levelled the game over the next two sessions

Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim frustrated Pakistan in a truncated morning session, but the visitors levelled the game over the next two sessions. Bangladesh’s fragility was once again on display after lunch, as the final five wickets went down for 33 runs after which Pakistan’s top order responded strongly.Until the Bangladesh lower-order collapse in the afternoon, the only impediment to the home side’s progress had been the fog in Mirpur, which wiped out an hour’s play. Shakib and Mushfiqur crafted a slow-and-steady stand once it cleared, to give the small but vocal crowd something to cheer about on a chilly morning.Shakib made his highest first-class score and was headed for Bangladesh’s record individual Test effort when he was run-out. Mushfiqur took a few quick steps before stopping and sending Shakib back, but a direct hit from Taufeeq Umar, running in from mid-on, was enough to snap the partnership at 82. Shakib walked off, after several glares at his captain over the poor calling.Whether that had an effect on Mushfiqur is hard to tell, but the very next delivery, he gloved a catch down the leg side to the wicketkeeper which left two new lower-order batsmen at the crease, and Pakistan sniffing a quick end to the innings. Elias Sunny and Shahadat Hossain rode their luck in a brief, entertaining stand – Sunny survived as an Umar Gul delivery kissed off stump without disturbing the bails, and Shahadat was put down by Abdur Rehman at deep midwicket. The innings ended in a hurry, though, as Saeed Ajmal’s doosra proved too much for the tailenders, and a run-out curtailed Nazmul Hossain’s first Test knock in seven years to a single delivery. In contrast, Pakistan had little to celebrate in the morning. There was little movement on offer for the quick bowlers and even with the second new ball Gul and Aizaz Cheema couldn’t get any major deviation. With the old ball, Pakistan’s dangerous spin pair of Ajmal and Rehman got some turn, but were blunted by Shakib and Mushfiqur.Shakib hit only one boundary in the first session, and survived several lbw calls and an outside edge that landed short of slip. While he was circumspect, Mushfiqur was more enterprising. There was a powerful swipe over midwicket for six off Ajmal, and he picked up several boundaries with his favoured cut shot. They took Bangladesh past 300 in Tests for only the second time since May 2010, but their back-to-back dismissals restricted the innings to a far lower score than expected. There was something to buoy the home side as they went in for tea. They removed Mohammad Hafeez, who has had a great run in 2011, including a big century in the previous Test. He had begun ominously, swatting consecutive boundaries in the third over, but nicked Nazmul’s first ball in Tests in seven years, to be dismissed for 14.Bangladesh’s bowlers gifted easy runs till late in the final session, when the spinners Shakib and Mahmudullah kept the batsmen in check. There was an early close call for Azhar Ali, who unwisely shouldered arms to a delivery that nipped in from Robiul, narrowly avoiding a supremely confident shout for lbw. He wasn’t at his most assured against the spinners either, beaten several times by the big turn Shakib was extracting, and once edging just wide of the slips.Taufeeq Umar was more confident, initially capitalising on the loose deliveries on offer. There were plenty of cuts and drives as he picked up eight boundaries on his way to 44, before bad light expectedly ended play an hour early. There’s still plenty of work to do for the Pakistan batting but with their increasingly reliable middle order, they will fancy their chances of overhauling Bangladesh’s total.
