AVFC must unleash Carney Chukwuemeka

Having racked up 32 goals and 43 assists in 213 appearances across all competitions before joining fellow Premier League side Manchester City during the previous summer transfer window in a record-breaking deal, Jack Grealish had been a pivotal figure for Aston Villa after working his way through the club’s youth ranks.

Now having to move on without the England international, current Villa manager Steven Gerrard could potentially have the opportunity to unearth his own version of the £72m-rated Grealish.

That falls in the form of 18-year-old superstar Carney Chukwuemeka.

Since joining the club’s youth ranks back in 2016, the teenager has gone on to make 66 appearances across their U18, U23 and senior sides, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists along the way, showing how capable he is in front of goal like Grealish was when he was a Villan.

After it was reported that the youngster was not pleased with his game time in the first team and would not be signing a new deal at the Midlands club back in November, Gerrard seems to have been giving the teenager some chances to shine from the substitutes bench with eight league appearances under his belt since the former Rangers boss was appointed back in November.

Having been praised for his “outstanding” performances in a Villa shirt by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson, Chukwuemeka could be just what the manager needs to freshen up his side at the moment having seen them win just one of their previous seven league games.

Moving forward, it could be worth the Liverpudlian boss giving his second start of the campaign after he played 63 minutes in their 1-1 draw against Brentford back in August.

If the youngster then manages to make the most of any opportunities he gets to play and show what he’s capable of, he could well follow in Grealish’s footsteps to become a regular and important figure in the team, putting to bed any speculation over his future at the club at the same time.

ScorecardMiddlesex beat Essex by five runs in a thrilling Friends Provident t20 match atLord’s to record their second win of the season in the competition. The Panthers had posted a substantial total of 200 for 6 from their allottedovers, with captain-elect Neil Dexter top-scoring with 43, but their opponentsproduced a brave attempt in the pursuit thanks to a stunning effort from Ryanten Doeschate. The Dutch all-rounder scored 102 from 54 deliveries, clearing the ropes onseven occasions and also adding five fours to keep his side in the hunt. When he eventually holed out to Eoin Morgan at cover off the bowling of Pedro Collins, the Eagles required a further 23 runs. But the initiative had been regained by the home side with the wicket and when the final over commenced, 15runs were needed. However Tim Murtagh held his nerve, removing Tim Phillips with his firstdelivery and although Danish Kaneria plundered a six off the next ball, thefollowing two deliveries yielded just one run before Kaneria was run out toensure the Middlesex victory. At the halfway stage of their reply, Essex had reached 91 for 2 but thearrival of Ten Doeschate set the game alight only for his efforts to prove invain as the Eagles finished on 195 for eight and their third defeat in fourmatches. Dexter had anchored the home side’s innings after Australian opening pair AdamGilchrist, and David Warner had launched the innings with 21 in 16 balls beforeNew Zealand international Scott Styris claimed both scalps. Gilchrist hit 13 andhis partner 25 from 15 balls, with two sixes.Owais Shah chipped in with 35 and Gareth Berg hit an unbeaten 24 but thevisitors were left to rue sending down 18 wides to give their opponents extradeliveries and runs that were to prove so crucial in the final outcome. Both teams were playing under newly-installed captains for this competition and it was Middlesex skipper Gilchrist, who is doing the job on a short-term basis before passing over to Dexter, who finished with bragging rights over hisopposite number James Foster. As a result. the Panthers leapfrogged their opponents in the league table afterboth teams had started the game at the wrong end of the South Division tablewith only Surrey beneath them.

Leeds: Marcelo Bielsa makes more comments on Patrick Bamford

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa provided a further update on Patrick Bamford’s injury following the 3-3 draw with Aston Villa on Wednesday evening.

The Lowdown: Bamford’s injury woes

Bamford has been out for the majority of the current campaign, with his last start coming way back in September.

He briefly returned from an ankle problem against Brentford and scored a dramatic injury-time equaliser, however, he hasn’t featured since due to hamstring and foot problems.

Bielsa admitted he was worried about the 28-year-old prior to the draw with Steven Gerrard’s side and was once again quizzed on the forward ahead of the trip to Everton on Saturday.

The Latest: Bielsa’s comments

Talking to the media after the game, relayed by the BBC, Bielsa says that Bamford ‘has a problem’ in his foot that has kept him from running.

The treatment he has been receiving hasn’t helped, labelling it as ‘impossible’ to put a timescale on his return.

“He has a problem in his foot which is preventing him from running due to the pain. He’s having treatment which isn’t taking the pain away at the moment.

“The first step for his recovery is that he is able to move. That hasn’t happened and it’s impossible to imagine when that’s going to happen.”

The Verdict: Frustrating

Even though Dan James starred as a centre-forward against Aston Villa on Wednesday, Bielsa could still do with having Bamford back as soon as possible.

He seems reluctant to use young striker Joe Gelhardt from the off, Tyler Roberts has scored just nine times in 105 games and Rodrigo appears to be a number 10 under Bielsa.

Therefore, having Bamford back, who Jurgen Klopp described as a player with ‘rare’ qualities, is absolutely essential to get an out and out focal point back in the team, especially after his 17-goal tally last season.

In other news: Lost the ball 65 times, 76% of duels lost, just 2 tackles: Leeds’ 3 worst players against Villa.

Faisal Iqbal accuses PCB of victimisation

Javed Miandad’s nephew Faisal Iqbal has accused the PCB of unfairly targeting him after being left out of the team that will play six tests in England this summer. “I’m really disheartened,” Faisal told the . “They have given me the shock of my life by discarding me without any due reason. It’s pure victimisation and nothing else.”Faisal last played for Pakistan on the disastrous tour of Australia, where he averaged 24.25 in the first two Tests before being replaced for the third Test. His exclusion from the England tour has left him disheartened and he claimed his shabby treatment would serve as a deterrent to young players coming through the system.”I’ve played as a replacement player for the last nine years,” he said. “I’ve scored even in difficult conditions though the chances I was given were few and far between. I’m young and fit and have matured now but they have just discarded me without any fault of mine. Such treatment of players like me, who are loyal to their country, will dishearten the next generation of cricketers.”He also argued that he turned down lucrative contract offers from the ICL because of his love for his country, unlike some of the players named in the squad. “I just wanted to play for my country and give my best for it.” Faisal has played 26 Tests for Pakistan since making his debut in 2001 against New Zealand, averaging a tad under 27 with one century and eight half-centuries

AVFC dealt McAtee transfer blow

Even though Aston Villa may have had a fairly impressive January transfer window in terms of the business they completed throughout the month, it seems as though they’ve now been dealt a blow in their apparent chase to sign one of the Premier League’s most promising young talents.

What’s the latest?

After being linked with a move for Manchester City midfielder James McAtee during the recent January transfer window among many other clubs also vying for his signature, Villa and those other clubs have now been dealt a big blow in their future attempts to sign the 19-year-old.

That’s after he recently put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at the Manchester club on Wednesday evening.

Gerrard gutted

In 81 appearances for City’s youth sides, McAtee has managed to rack up 42 goals and 26 assists, highlighting the clear attacking talents he has and presumably why so many clubs were apparently after him last month.

This also shows how disappointed and gutted Villa manager Steven Gerrard will be at missing out on having a young talent like McAtee in his ranks.

Described as an “intelligent” player in the past by City academy coach Brian Barry-Murphy, he could have been the perfect replacement for current Villa teenager Carney Chukwuemeka with the future of his time at Villa Park in doubt.

Now that the midfielder has pledged his future to the reigning league champions and current leaders until 2026, this could put an end to the possibility of the Midlands side or any other team signing him on a permanent basis in the immediate future.

However, with the teenager only making three senior appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side across all competitions so far this season, all coming from the substitutes bench, there’s every chance that a loan move away where he’d be able to play regular senior minutes would be seen as beneficial for the youngster.

With that in mind, when the next summer transfer window opens, if the Englishman doesn’t manage to break into the City team before then and isn’t likely to get much senior game time, it would definitely be worth seeing if they’d be willing to loan him out to a club like Villa.

Duckworth defends rain-rules formula

The statistician Frank Duckworth has launched a robust defence of the eponymous formula that he devised, in partnership with Tony Lewis, to recalculate run-chases in rain-affected one-day games

Andrew Miller04-May-2010The statistician Frank Duckworth has launched a robust defence of the eponymous formula that he devised, in partnership with Tony Lewis, to recalculate run-chases in rain-affected one-day games, and believes that the current criticism of his calculations stems entirely from Paul Collingwood’s frustrations, following England’s failure to beat West Indies in their opening contest of the World Twenty20 in Guyana. The Duckworth-Lewis system was devised in the 1990s and formally adopted by the ICC in 2001, and is widely regarded as the fairest means of resolving rain-shortened contests in 50-over cricket, even if the workings of the formula are a mystery to all but the most mathematically gifted. However, for the second time in consecutive World Twenty20 contests against West Indies, Collingwood was left feeling aggrieved following defeats that he believed might not have occurred had the matches been played out over their full distance. At The Oval in June 2009, West Indies progressed to the semi-finals by chasing 80 in nine overs after England had posted an imposing 161 for 6, while Monday’s discrepancy seemed even more stark – England made 191 for 5, but West Indies were left needing 60 in six overs, thanks to an early onslaught from their captain, Chris Gayle, who admitted he had chosen to bat second in the contest precisely because he anticipated D/L would be a factor.”There’s a major problem with Duckworth-Lewis in this form of the game,” Collingwood told reporters after the match. “I’ve got no problem with it in one-dayers … but it’s certainly got to be revised in this form. Ninety-five percent of the time when you get 191 runs on the board you are going to win the game. Unfortunately Duckworth-Lewis seems to have other ideas and brings the equation completely the other way and makes it very difficult.”However, when asked if he accepted that a recalibration was required to reflect the higher tempo of Twenty20 cricket, Duckworth was emphatic in his rebuttal.”No I don’t, quite frankly,” he told Cricinfo’s Switch Hit podcast. “Remember that there have been a total of about 70 matches decided by Duckworth-Lewis since Twenty20 was invented in 2002, and there’s only been two instances where any dissent has been expressed, and both of those were by Paul Collingwood and the England team, as a result of failing to win against West Indies.”That revised target of 60 from six overs was set because, before the rain interruption, West Indies had faced 14 balls and scored a massive 30 runs without losing any wickets,” Duckworth added. “They were 11 runs ahead of the D/L par, and if the match hadn’t been able to restart, and if for the sake of argument you allowed a match to be valid with only 2.2 overs bowled, then West Indies would have won by 11 runs. They were winning easily when the rain came.”Nevertheless, that winning position was largely due to the exploits of Gayle, who cracked 15 runs off Ryan Sidebottom’s first over of the reply en route to 25 from 12 balls. He was eventually dismissed seven balls after the resumption, at 41 for 1 after 3.3 overs, although by that stage of the recalculated run-chase, West Indies required just 19 more runs to win from 15 balls, whereas in a full 20-over innings, the figure would have been a more daunting 151 from 99.Duckworth, however, insisted that his maths still added up. “We don’t know what would have happened [in a full contest],” he said. “I’ve seen Gayle score a Twenty20 century in absolutely no time, so you’ve no idea. His dismissal didn’t affect the situation at that stage. If he’d got out before the rain, when there were still ostensibly 20 overs still to face, that would have been important because it would have significantly affected the run-scoring capability.”Wickets start to diminish in importance the shorter the game,” he added. “The fact that the match had been reduced to a further 3.4 overs only meant that his wicket was fairly immaterial. The only thing that was lost was the momentum [that his innings had generated], but there are plenty other good West Indians who could come in and pick up the mantle.”On another day, one of those men might have been Kieron Pollard, but as Duckworth himself conceded, his unusual dismissal – stumped off a leg-side wide for 0 – actually worked in West Indies’ favour on this occasion, because they earned a run for the extra, without using up any deliveries. However, he did not accept that such anomalies ought to be factored into future Twenty20 scenarios, with sides permitted to lose only, say, three or four wickets in the case of a six-over chase.”It would have made no difference,” he said. “When the target was revised, the resources [we factored in] were whatever wickets are left and the fewer overs. We only alter the overs. The consideration of losing wickets came in over ten years ago, right at the start, and there are very good reasons why this would be totally impractical.”Duckworth did, however, confirm that small alterations to the formula are made from time to time, as came to light during a CB40 fixture between Leicestershire and Durham on Monday, when it transpired that the scorers at Grace Road had been using the 2009 calculations to set Leicester a chase of 176 in 26 overs, when the 2010 figure ought to have been 181.”We do recalibrate quite regularly,” he said. “We review the data every four years, and last summer as part of a series of regular reviews, we did reanalyse all the data that existed, and this for the first time included an extremely large pot of Twenty20 data.”We reached two important conclusions. The first was that the scoring patterns in Twenty20 matches fitted in absolutely perfectly with the formula that we’d always used satisfactorily with 50-over games. Secondly, however, there were one or two small changes needed to the numbers going into our formula, so that the tables and the targets would be ever so slightly different. But the changes were very small, and were accepted by the ICC in an independent assessment by their statistical advisors.”

West Ham backed to sign David Hancko

There is a ‘real possibility’ that West Ham could sign Sparta Prague left-back David Hancko this month, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Hancko impressing for Sparta

The 24-year-old has been a key figure for the Czech outfit this season, shining both domestically and in Europe.

Hancko has made 17 starts in the Gambrinus League, chipping in with four goals, as well as starting six of his side’s Europa League matches, where he has added two more goals and an assist to his tally.

West Ham have been linked with a move for the 19-time capped Slovakia international and now a further update has emerged.

The Latest: West Ham backed to make move

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke claimed it is a move he could see materialising before Monday’s transfer cutoff:

“I think this is a real possibility for West Ham. It might be an easier deal to do than all the other targets that they’ve been chasing this month.

“He’s done well for Sparta Prague this season, six goals in 27 games and four assists, and can play left-back as well as centre-back so would add a lot of options to David Moyes’ squad.”

The Verdict: Strong addition for Hammers

Hancko could be a great signing for the Hammers, going the same way as both Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal in arriving from Prague. Relations between the two clubs could surely help the transfer go through, too.

The left-back’s aforementioned quality in the final third could help add an extra dimension to David Moyes’ side’s game and he could provide strong competition for Aaron Cresswell, who has struggled on and off with injuries in recent times.

The fact that he is also capable of playing at centre-back is an added bonus, especially with left-footed Angelo Ogbonna out injured for the rest of the season.

In other news, some West Ham fans are buzzing over a transfer update. Read more here.
