Taylor lauds Zimbabwe's all-round performance

Several of Zimbabwe’s displays in the past had centered around one player with the rest failing to contribute but Taylor said the victory today marked a break from that trend

Man of the Match Brendan Taylor has put down Zimbabwe’s six-wicket win over India to a combined effort that was unlike many of his team’s performances in the past. “This was a thoroughly good all-round performance on a flat wicket, and it’s nice to see the guys chipping in,” Taylor, who top scored for his team with 81, said. “We’ve always struggled in the past when one guy chips in and everyone struggles.”Taylor, during his 103-ball stay, was involved in two major partnerships that set up Zimbabwe’s successful chase of a seemingly formidable 285. He added 88 in 13 overs with opener Hamilton Masakadza, and followed it up with a further 63 with Greg Lamb. The second stand consumed 16.3 overs, and when Taylor fell with the score on 176, Zimbabwe’s required rate had crept to more than seven-an-over. The flat wicket and the presence of some power-players down the order, however, meant Zimbabwe had to preserve their wickets for a good part of the chase, Taylor said.”The plan was to basically just keep knocking the ball around. We know we have Andy Blignaut and Elton [Chigumbura] at the bottom there and Charles [Coventry] coming in too. So we’ve got the firepower to catch up in the end with the batting Powerplay. There wasn’t really too much risk to be taken.”We were trying to bat the way they [India] sort of started; construct the innings pretty well. It was a nice wicket to bat on, [the strategy was to] not lose too many wickets and back yourself to really have a go.”Chigumbura, leading Zimbabwe for the first time, was off the mark with the ball, conceding 26 in an over which included 14 wides and a no-ball, but chipped in during the chase, combining with debutant Craig Ervine in an unbeaten 58-run stand to steer his team home. “It wasn’t easy for me,” he said of his first match as captain. “I thought I let the team down in the first half but some of the guys played well. We had a good partnership first up which gave us a good foundation to win the game.”The plan was for the seamers to get one or two wickets to make it easy for the spinners, but it went the other way – only one seamer bowled well. I thought the rest of the spinners bowled well.”It’s a good start for Craig Ervine to score a half-century on debut. The main focus now is to be consistent as a team.”Suresh Raina, unlike his Zimbabwean counterpart, had a poor start to his captaincy, as his bowlers, particularly the inexperienced seamers, failed to measure up in a determined chase by the hosts. The batting Powerplay available to Zimbabwe at the death, with Chigumbura and Ervine cashing in, cost India the game, he said. “It [the target] was defendable. Amit Mishra bowled really well, [Ravindra] Jadeja also. But they still had a Powerplay left at the end, and a couple of their players batted really well. That’s what cost the game for us.”The highlight of India’s performance was a maiden ODI century from Rohit Sharma, who helped them recover from 67 for 3. The bowling, though, according to Raina, needed improvement if India were to challenge Sri Lanka in their next fixture. “The way Rohit was hitting the ball was remarkable,” Raina said. “We need to work on our bowling. A couple of players are playing for the first time, but hopefully they will learn from this mistake.”India take on Sri Lanka in the next game of the series on May 30 in Bulawayo.

Leeds: Marcelo Bielsa makes more comments on Patrick Bamford

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa provided a further update on Patrick Bamford’s injury following the 3-3 draw with Aston Villa on Wednesday evening.

The Lowdown: Bamford’s injury woes

Bamford has been out for the majority of the current campaign, with his last start coming way back in September.

He briefly returned from an ankle problem against Brentford and scored a dramatic injury-time equaliser, however, he hasn’t featured since due to hamstring and foot problems.

Bielsa admitted he was worried about the 28-year-old prior to the draw with Steven Gerrard’s side and was once again quizzed on the forward ahead of the trip to Everton on Saturday.

The Latest: Bielsa’s comments

Talking to the media after the game, relayed by the BBC, Bielsa says that Bamford ‘has a problem’ in his foot that has kept him from running.

The treatment he has been receiving hasn’t helped, labelling it as ‘impossible’ to put a timescale on his return.

“He has a problem in his foot which is preventing him from running due to the pain. He’s having treatment which isn’t taking the pain away at the moment.

“The first step for his recovery is that he is able to move. That hasn’t happened and it’s impossible to imagine when that’s going to happen.”

The Verdict: Frustrating

Even though Dan James starred as a centre-forward against Aston Villa on Wednesday, Bielsa could still do with having Bamford back as soon as possible.

He seems reluctant to use young striker Joe Gelhardt from the off, Tyler Roberts has scored just nine times in 105 games and Rodrigo appears to be a number 10 under Bielsa.

Therefore, having Bamford back, who Jurgen Klopp described as a player with ‘rare’ qualities, is absolutely essential to get an out and out focal point back in the team, especially after his 17-goal tally last season.

In other news: Lost the ball 65 times, 76% of duels lost, just 2 tackles: Leeds’ 3 worst players against Villa.

AVFC dealt McAtee transfer blow

Even though Aston Villa may have had a fairly impressive January transfer window in terms of the business they completed throughout the month, it seems as though they’ve now been dealt a blow in their apparent chase to sign one of the Premier League’s most promising young talents.

What’s the latest?

After being linked with a move for Manchester City midfielder James McAtee during the recent January transfer window among many other clubs also vying for his signature, Villa and those other clubs have now been dealt a big blow in their future attempts to sign the 19-year-old.

That’s after he recently put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at the Manchester club on Wednesday evening.

Gerrard gutted

In 81 appearances for City’s youth sides, McAtee has managed to rack up 42 goals and 26 assists, highlighting the clear attacking talents he has and presumably why so many clubs were apparently after him last month.

This also shows how disappointed and gutted Villa manager Steven Gerrard will be at missing out on having a young talent like McAtee in his ranks.

Described as an “intelligent” player in the past by City academy coach Brian Barry-Murphy, he could have been the perfect replacement for current Villa teenager Carney Chukwuemeka with the future of his time at Villa Park in doubt.

Now that the midfielder has pledged his future to the reigning league champions and current leaders until 2026, this could put an end to the possibility of the Midlands side or any other team signing him on a permanent basis in the immediate future.

However, with the teenager only making three senior appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side across all competitions so far this season, all coming from the substitutes bench, there’s every chance that a loan move away where he’d be able to play regular senior minutes would be seen as beneficial for the youngster.

With that in mind, when the next summer transfer window opens, if the Englishman doesn’t manage to break into the City team before then and isn’t likely to get much senior game time, it would definitely be worth seeing if they’d be willing to loan him out to a club like Villa.

Katich inspired by late-blooming Hussey

On Saturday, Simon Katich and Michael Hussey will walk out on to Seddon Park each celebrating their 50th Test match, having taken very different paths to get there

Simon Katich and Michael Hussey are set to play their 50th Tests•AFP

Simon Katich and Michael Hussey have shared many things over the years, from their days of playing junior cricket against each other as nine-year-olds in Perth to Katich being the best man at Hussey’s wedding. On Saturday, they will walk out on to Seddon Park in Hamilton each celebrating their 50th Test match for Australia, having taken very different paths to get there.Katich debuted at 25 and was considered a long-term Test player until a poor 2005 Ashes tour led to his axing, and it was only through record-breaking efforts for New South Wales that he forced his way back in during 2008. Katich’s last Test before that near three-year break came at the Gabba in 2005-06, and it also happened to mark the debut of Hussey, who at 30 was worried he might have missed his chance. As the two men, both fit at 34 but with flecks of grey hair betraying their years, stood at Seddon Park thinking about their mini-milestone their minds wandered back to their junior days in Perth. They traded banter with the ease of old mates, Katich joking that at 12 he had a full beard and Hussey had a high-pitched voice, while Hussey remembered his Wanneroo boys losing a premiership to Katich’s Midland-Guildford club.”The one thing I remember was playing a grand final, Under-13s against each other and Simon Katich’s mum made a cake for both teams to celebrate after the game,” Hussey said. “That was quite good, both teams got together after the game and we all shared this big chocolate cake. That’s one thing I remember about the Katich family. They won.”Despite the light-hearted repartee, Hussey and Katich both said it was very special to share their 50th Test with each other, especially as five years ago neither thought the day would ever come. When Hussey eventually got his chance at Test level he started with a bang, averaging 86.33 after 14 matches, and it was that drive that helped inspire Katich to force his way back.”Personally probably three years ago I didn’t think I’d play Test cricket again,” Katich said. “It’s different for Huss. He has been a constant in the team for the last four years and he has been outstanding. I certainly got a lot of inspiration out of that, seeing him do so well and he deserves every success he’s had because he has worked so hard to get here and when he grabbed his opportunity, he grabbed it with both hands.”Together, Katich and Hussey’s Test tally on Saturday will add up to the hundred being celebrated by the New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori. They might not have Test futures as long as Vettori, who is four years younger, but such has been the success of the Australians over the past few years that Hussey, with half the games, has still played in more Test wins (33) than Vettori (31).Victory in Hamilton would give Australia the series 2-0 and it would be Katich’s 25th Test win. But Katich, who appeared on last year, doesn’t expect a chocolate cake from his Mum this time. “I do all the baking now,” he said.

Players to Keep an Eye on in the Premier League

As the Premier League progresses and players are getting transferred like trading cards in January, it’s interesting to look at the top players of the league to far. Maybe it will inform some transfer decisions, maybe it will inform some betting options or maybe it is all pie in the sky given the ridiculous sums bandied around in the press and on TV.

Whether you’re looking for some insight or amusement, take a look at our picks for the players to keep an eye on in the Premier League.

Photo by Emilio Garcia on UnsplashJamie Vardy, Leicester City FCAre all goals created equal? That is the question that is posed from looking closely at Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy. The striker memorably put away three goals in September in a game against Burnley in the early days of the Premier League – but one of them was an own goal. No, Jamie, we’re not about to forget it either. However, Vardy is making up for it for being one of the top scorers of the Premier League, third in place behind Liverpool’s Salah and Jota. In 16 games played he has gained nine goals and his ability to turn the tables on his opponent at the last possible moment makes for a nail-biting experience to watch. For that alone, you should keep an eye on him.Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait to see him, as at the moment he’s off for a month with a hamstring injury incurred during his game against Liverpool on December 28th, 2021. He can do some sports betting online like the rest of us for the time being.Kieran Trippier, Newcastle FCOnly as of the 4th of January has the news been confirmed that Keiran Trippier is joining Newcastle United FC. Coming in from Atletico Madrid of all teams, the 31-year-old defender was bought for £12million to Newcastle, where he will be reunited with his old Burnley turned Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe. Doesn’t that warm the heart? The sad reality is that Newcastle is currently second to last in the Premier League at the moment, having shamefully won only one game since the season started, and they’ll need a decent injection of talent to pull them out of this slump. Will Trippier be the one to pull them out? He’s got the experience, having played for Burnley, Tottenham, and England in the past, and his time with Atletico Madrid has left a good impression, concluding with a La Liga win last season.Mohamed Salah, Liverpool FCLiverpool FC are currently third on the Premier League table, just a point behind Chelsea and vying for that semi-final space – and no one can say they would have got there without Mohamed Salah.Salah not only tops the scorers’ chart but the assists chart too, having assisted on 9 goals on top of his 16 scored in 20 games. In the process he equaled Jamie Vardy’s record of scoring a goal in 15 consecutive Premier League games, proving he can go against the best before him and extending his long history of breaking records. It was frankly a snub to see that he wasn’t nominated for the FIFA Fifpro World 11 awards, especially when 10 Premier League players made the cut.Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp agrees, saying that Salah is “phenomenal” and that “For sure, at the moment, he is the best player in the world.”Does praise get any higher? Even, no, especially, if it’s coming from your boss.Unfortunately, yet another game has been postponed due to an outbreak amongst the players, so we’ll have to wait to see how Salah does against Arsenal in the first semi-final match of the season.

Pietersen fails after Tredwell stars

James Tredwell built a case for inclusion as England’s second spinner in next week’s first Test, but it was the young Middlesex seamer Steven Finn who really caught the eye

Andrew Miller in Chittagong07-Mar-2010Close England XI 68 for 3 (Trott 32*) trail Bangladesh A 202 (Raqibul Hasan 107* Tredwell 6-95) by 134 runs
ScorecardJames Tredwell built a case for inclusion as England’s second spinner in next week’s first Test, claiming 6 for 95 in his first first-class outing in England colours, as Bangladesh A were bowled out for 202 after winning the toss in their three-day tour match at Chittagong. For that total, they were entirely indebted to the Test prospect, Raqibul Hasan, who etched his name into the Bangladesh starting line-up with a gutsy and well-compiled 107 not out from 150 balls.By the close, however, the focus had shifted to Kevin Pietersen’s continued travails – and in particular, his peculiar problem against left-arm spin. Since the opening one-day warm-up in Fatullah last month, Pietersen has made scores of 0, 6, 1, 18, 22 … and now 2 from five balls, as he was suckered by the part-time tweakers of Mehrab Hossain Jr, who had previously managed 45 wickets in 46 first-class appearances. At stumps, England had reached a slightly jittery 68 for 3 in reply, with Michael Carberry enduring a tough baptism at the top of the order. His inclusion had given a hint as to the direction England intend to take in the Test series, as his specialist skills were preferred ahead of the allround capabilities of Luke Wright at No. 7. But he was struck a painful blow by Dollar Mahmud in the second over of the innings, before being pinned lbw for 5 three balls later. Alastair Cook went the same way to Robiul Islam for 19, leaving Jonathan Trott unbeaten on 32.Carberry may not get another chance to impress before the Tests, but Tredwell hardly needs to state his credentials any more clearly. Should he be selected for the Chittagong Test in five days’ time, he and Graeme Swann will form England’s first all-offspin attack since Such and Emburey in the 1993 Ashes, and if there are still doubts about the variety he offers, his stamina cannot be underestimated. Having entered the attack from the press box end in the 16th over of the day, he claimed five of his wickets in an unbroken 27-over spell, before switching ends and wrapping up the innings within three further deliveries. The first of Tredwell’s wickets seemed a touch fortuitous, as the opener Shamsur Rahman was given out to a diving catch by Ian Bell at short leg, even though England barely bothered to appeal as the ball looped off the pad flap. There was no arguing, however, about his second. Mohammad Ashraful came into this match needing a big score to justify his retention in Bangladesh’s Test team, after his self-imposed break from the ODI series. Instead, he followed his tally of three ducks in four domestic innings for Dhaka with 1 from six balls, as Bell was once again alert under the lid to end his stay in the first over after lunch.Raqibul, however, showed far greater powers of durability, as he produced a Test standard response to adversity. He brought up his half-century from 82 balls by sweeping Tredwell through midwicket for consecutive boundaries, and when he began to run out of partners with his hundred looming, he raised his game once again, belting Tredwell down the ground for a one-bounce four, before hoisting him through wide long-on to reach his milestone from 150 deliveries. He had been dropped for the recent Test in New Zealand following scores of 4 and 5 against India last month, but this was an innings that showcased his full credentials.Steven Finn bent his back to impress on his full England debut•Getty Images

“When a player loses his place from the main team, he always feels some kind of pressure. But I took it all positively and accepted the challenge,” said Raqibul. “I was not worried about it. When I went to the wicket, I decided whatever happens I will stay positive, and after tea, when I was running short of partners, I decided to attack the spinner [Tredwell], because the boundary was shorter from his end.”Nevertheless, England still had the opposite end at which to make inroads, and they did so with minimum fuss, with no other batsman managing more than Shamsur’s 21. Ajmal Shahzad, one of four potential England debutants in this match, made the first breakthrough at the end of the eighth over, when Junaid Siddique poked outside off to be caught behind for 16, while Mehrab Hossain went the same way to Liam Plunkett in the penultimate over of the morning session, having laboured his way to 9 from 64 balls. The afternoon session belonged to the young Middlesex seamer, Steven Finn, who had arrived in the country less than 24 hours before the start of play, after being flown in as injury cover for Stuart Broad and Graham Onions. His 6’7” frame had caught the eye of England’s coach, Andy Flower, at a Performance Programme training session in Pretoria before Christmas, and it also proved crucial in the capturing of Tredwell’s third wicket, as he leaped athletically at mid-on to intercept a swipe from Shuvagoto Hom.But it was the pace and hostility of Finn’s bowling that really impressed today. In Dhaka six years ago, Steve Harmison’s height and bounce brought him nine matchwinning wickets in his only outing of the tour, and the England thinktank may well be recalling that as they ponder their options for the Test series. In two bursts of four and three overs, Finn caused endless problems for the Bangladeshi batsmen, and the wicketkeeper Sagir Hossain and Dollar were both caught behind in identical fashion – beaten by a tight line, sharp lift, and subtle late movement. But Finn was used sparingly as he overcame his jet-lag, and it was left to Tredwell to mop up the tail. Noor Hossain (6) had a massive mow across the line as Bell collected a steepling top-edge; Syed Rasel played down the wrong line and was bowled for 1, and though Robiul Islam hung around for long enough to allow Raqibul to reach his hundred, he couldn’t resist for long afterwards. Another swipe landed in the hands of Pietersen at mid-off, which turned out to be his most impressive contribution of the day.
