Players to Keep an Eye on in the Premier League

As the Premier League progresses and players are getting transferred like trading cards in January, it’s interesting to look at the top players of the league to far. Maybe it will inform some transfer decisions, maybe it will inform some betting options or maybe it is all pie in the sky given the ridiculous sums bandied around in the press and on TV.

Whether you’re looking for some insight or amusement, take a look at our picks for the players to keep an eye on in the Premier League.

Photo by Emilio Garcia on UnsplashJamie Vardy, Leicester City FCAre all goals created equal? That is the question that is posed from looking closely at Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy. The striker memorably put away three goals in September in a game against Burnley in the early days of the Premier League – but one of them was an own goal. No, Jamie, we’re not about to forget it either. However, Vardy is making up for it for being one of the top scorers of the Premier League, third in place behind Liverpool’s Salah and Jota. In 16 games played he has gained nine goals and his ability to turn the tables on his opponent at the last possible moment makes for a nail-biting experience to watch. For that alone, you should keep an eye on him.Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait to see him, as at the moment he’s off for a month with a hamstring injury incurred during his game against Liverpool on December 28th, 2021. He can do some sports betting online like the rest of us for the time being.Kieran Trippier, Newcastle FCOnly as of the 4th of January has the news been confirmed that Keiran Trippier is joining Newcastle United FC. Coming in from Atletico Madrid of all teams, the 31-year-old defender was bought for £12million to Newcastle, where he will be reunited with his old Burnley turned Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe. Doesn’t that warm the heart? The sad reality is that Newcastle is currently second to last in the Premier League at the moment, having shamefully won only one game since the season started, and they’ll need a decent injection of talent to pull them out of this slump. Will Trippier be the one to pull them out? He’s got the experience, having played for Burnley, Tottenham, and England in the past, and his time with Atletico Madrid has left a good impression, concluding with a La Liga win last season.Mohamed Salah, Liverpool FCLiverpool FC are currently third on the Premier League table, just a point behind Chelsea and vying for that semi-final space – and no one can say they would have got there without Mohamed Salah.Salah not only tops the scorers’ chart but the assists chart too, having assisted on 9 goals on top of his 16 scored in 20 games. In the process he equaled Jamie Vardy’s record of scoring a goal in 15 consecutive Premier League games, proving he can go against the best before him and extending his long history of breaking records. It was frankly a snub to see that he wasn’t nominated for the FIFA Fifpro World 11 awards, especially when 10 Premier League players made the cut.Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp agrees, saying that Salah is “phenomenal” and that “For sure, at the moment, he is the best player in the world.”Does praise get any higher? Even, no, especially, if it’s coming from your boss.Unfortunately, yet another game has been postponed due to an outbreak amongst the players, so we’ll have to wait to see how Salah does against Arsenal in the first semi-final match of the season.

Morgan saves England with brilliant hundred

Eoin Morgan hit his first hundred for England as they overcame a major challenge from Bangladesh to secure a nerve-jangling two-wicket victory with seven balls to spare and seal the series in Mirpur. For Bangladesh it means their wait for success over England continues and their inability to close out matches came back to haunt them as Morgan’s ultra-cool approach proved too much. While England’s lower order lost their head with pressure building Morgan remained completely focused on his task, barely acknowledging the smattering of applause for his hundred which made him the first player to score centuries for two countries after he began his career with Ireland. When Graeme Swann missed a wild mow at Shakib Al Hasan, England needed 32 off 26 balls with debutant James Tredwell the other batsman at the crease and only an injured Stuart Broad to come. That equation came down to 25 from 17 balls and to Morgan’s advantage they were inside the Powerplay overs. England had delayed taking their option until the end and, for a while, it appeared it may be wasted but in the final result the restrictions proved vital.Morgan pierced the field with precision, reverse sweeping Abdur Razzak to relieve the pressure in the 48th over. With 16 needed from the last two overs he didn’t waste any time, making use of the extra pace from Shafiul Islam. He calmly hit two full tosses for four on either side of the wicket before, as he did against Pakistan in Dubai, sealing victory with a six over deep square-leg.Morgan could finally celebrate his efforts and was cheered off by his team-mates as England maintained their unbeaten record against the hosts – but this one was a close call. And indeed, it was fortunate that Morgan was around to the seal the game as he had a nervous start to his innings and survived two very strong leg before shouts against Mahmudullah. The first, when he had made just 7, was hazardously close, and both decisions could easily have gone against him.England faced early problems when Craig Kieswetter was caught at slip in the first over and Kevin Pietersen’s problems against left-arm spin continued. When Paul Collingwood was also leg before, Morgan entered at 68 for 3 and was happy to support the free-flowing Alastair Cook by rotating the strike at the beginning of his innings. He began to break free once Cook fell for 61-ball 60 – to a juggling catch by Mushfiqur Rahim – realising that he was the one to carry on the momentum that had been built. His role was made all the more important by Prior’s shaky start against Razzak and Shakib. After seeing off the left-arm spin threat, Morgan pulled Shafiul handsomely over square leg and Prior started to get going with a pressure-relieving reverse sweep off Naeem Islam. The pair added three more boundaries to put England firmly into the ascendancy before Razzak returned and Prior played half-forward to an arm ball to be pinned lbw, sparking a mini-collapse which gave Bangladesh hopeLuke Wright worked the ball around for a couple of overs before attempting an ungainly slog, and Tim Bresnan lasted only three balls before he fell lbw to Mahmudullah playing another poor sweep. Shakib then struck again in his final over, deceiving an advancing Swann with a flighted delivery to clatter the stumps. But with England seemingly in disarray Morgan marched on, serenely indifferent to the carnage with an innings of controlled aggression. With Shakib and Razzak – who shared six wickets between them – bowled out, Bangladesh’s captain turned to the pace of Shafiul but will be left ruing his decision after Morgan closed down the game with three boundaries in five balls.Bangladesh’s total of 260 for 6 – their highest in one-day internationals against England – was largely due to the efforts of Rahim with a superbly-paced 76 and Imrul Kayes’s rather more sedate 63. They added 90 for the third wicket to steady the innings after England had struck twice in quick succession, removing Tamim Iqbal, the star of the opening match with 125, and Aftab Ahmed in consecutive overs.Gaining in confidence as their partnership progressed, they took Bangladesh to 146 before Kayes fell to a fine, tumbling catch by Collingwood in the covers. Rahim went to his fifty, changing gears with a succession of well-placed boundaries to take the score past 200, before he misread a slower ball from Bresnan to be caught at mid on.A late flurry from Naeem and debutant Suhrawadi Shuvo – who closed the innings in style with a six and a four in the final over – boosted the total to competitive heights, but Morgan’s cool assurance ultimately proved to be the difference between the teams today.

Pietersen fails after Tredwell stars

James Tredwell built a case for inclusion as England’s second spinner in next week’s first Test, but it was the young Middlesex seamer Steven Finn who really caught the eye

Andrew Miller in Chittagong07-Mar-2010Close England XI 68 for 3 (Trott 32*) trail Bangladesh A 202 (Raqibul Hasan 107* Tredwell 6-95) by 134 runs
ScorecardJames Tredwell built a case for inclusion as England’s second spinner in next week’s first Test, claiming 6 for 95 in his first first-class outing in England colours, as Bangladesh A were bowled out for 202 after winning the toss in their three-day tour match at Chittagong. For that total, they were entirely indebted to the Test prospect, Raqibul Hasan, who etched his name into the Bangladesh starting line-up with a gutsy and well-compiled 107 not out from 150 balls.By the close, however, the focus had shifted to Kevin Pietersen’s continued travails – and in particular, his peculiar problem against left-arm spin. Since the opening one-day warm-up in Fatullah last month, Pietersen has made scores of 0, 6, 1, 18, 22 … and now 2 from five balls, as he was suckered by the part-time tweakers of Mehrab Hossain Jr, who had previously managed 45 wickets in 46 first-class appearances. At stumps, England had reached a slightly jittery 68 for 3 in reply, with Michael Carberry enduring a tough baptism at the top of the order. His inclusion had given a hint as to the direction England intend to take in the Test series, as his specialist skills were preferred ahead of the allround capabilities of Luke Wright at No. 7. But he was struck a painful blow by Dollar Mahmud in the second over of the innings, before being pinned lbw for 5 three balls later. Alastair Cook went the same way to Robiul Islam for 19, leaving Jonathan Trott unbeaten on 32.Carberry may not get another chance to impress before the Tests, but Tredwell hardly needs to state his credentials any more clearly. Should he be selected for the Chittagong Test in five days’ time, he and Graeme Swann will form England’s first all-offspin attack since Such and Emburey in the 1993 Ashes, and if there are still doubts about the variety he offers, his stamina cannot be underestimated. Having entered the attack from the press box end in the 16th over of the day, he claimed five of his wickets in an unbroken 27-over spell, before switching ends and wrapping up the innings within three further deliveries. The first of Tredwell’s wickets seemed a touch fortuitous, as the opener Shamsur Rahman was given out to a diving catch by Ian Bell at short leg, even though England barely bothered to appeal as the ball looped off the pad flap. There was no arguing, however, about his second. Mohammad Ashraful came into this match needing a big score to justify his retention in Bangladesh’s Test team, after his self-imposed break from the ODI series. Instead, he followed his tally of three ducks in four domestic innings for Dhaka with 1 from six balls, as Bell was once again alert under the lid to end his stay in the first over after lunch.Raqibul, however, showed far greater powers of durability, as he produced a Test standard response to adversity. He brought up his half-century from 82 balls by sweeping Tredwell through midwicket for consecutive boundaries, and when he began to run out of partners with his hundred looming, he raised his game once again, belting Tredwell down the ground for a one-bounce four, before hoisting him through wide long-on to reach his milestone from 150 deliveries. He had been dropped for the recent Test in New Zealand following scores of 4 and 5 against India last month, but this was an innings that showcased his full credentials.Steven Finn bent his back to impress on his full England debut•Getty Images

“When a player loses his place from the main team, he always feels some kind of pressure. But I took it all positively and accepted the challenge,” said Raqibul. “I was not worried about it. When I went to the wicket, I decided whatever happens I will stay positive, and after tea, when I was running short of partners, I decided to attack the spinner [Tredwell], because the boundary was shorter from his end.”Nevertheless, England still had the opposite end at which to make inroads, and they did so with minimum fuss, with no other batsman managing more than Shamsur’s 21. Ajmal Shahzad, one of four potential England debutants in this match, made the first breakthrough at the end of the eighth over, when Junaid Siddique poked outside off to be caught behind for 16, while Mehrab Hossain went the same way to Liam Plunkett in the penultimate over of the morning session, having laboured his way to 9 from 64 balls. The afternoon session belonged to the young Middlesex seamer, Steven Finn, who had arrived in the country less than 24 hours before the start of play, after being flown in as injury cover for Stuart Broad and Graham Onions. His 6’7” frame had caught the eye of England’s coach, Andy Flower, at a Performance Programme training session in Pretoria before Christmas, and it also proved crucial in the capturing of Tredwell’s third wicket, as he leaped athletically at mid-on to intercept a swipe from Shuvagoto Hom.But it was the pace and hostility of Finn’s bowling that really impressed today. In Dhaka six years ago, Steve Harmison’s height and bounce brought him nine matchwinning wickets in his only outing of the tour, and the England thinktank may well be recalling that as they ponder their options for the Test series. In two bursts of four and three overs, Finn caused endless problems for the Bangladeshi batsmen, and the wicketkeeper Sagir Hossain and Dollar were both caught behind in identical fashion – beaten by a tight line, sharp lift, and subtle late movement. But Finn was used sparingly as he overcame his jet-lag, and it was left to Tredwell to mop up the tail. Noor Hossain (6) had a massive mow across the line as Bell collected a steepling top-edge; Syed Rasel played down the wrong line and was bowled for 1, and though Robiul Islam hung around for long enough to allow Raqibul to reach his hundred, he couldn’t resist for long afterwards. Another swipe landed in the hands of Pietersen at mid-off, which turned out to be his most impressive contribution of the day.

Rueda vê 'partida histórica' do Fla e rasga elogios a César: 'Equilibrado'

Queríamos controlar a proposta do Junior. Sabíamos que Chará era uma válvula para eles. Tenho de valorizar o Fla pela entrega. Fizemos uma partida histórica para estar nessa final – comentou.

Aston Villa dealt Bissouma transfer setback

Aston Villa have been dealt a setback in their pursuit of Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma, with the south coast club having no desperate need to sell one of their star players in order to generate funds.

What’s the latest?

According to Sky Sports, the 25-year-old is in no rush to leave the Amex Stadium this month, despite interest from the Seagulls’ Premier League rivals Villa. Moreover, Brighton manager Graham Potter has stated that he is “confident” Bissouma will stay at the club beyond this month.

The Malian’s focus will currently be on his country’s fortunes at the Africa Cup on Nations, with Sky stating that his future will become clearer once he has returned to the UK from international duty. However, the midfielder did admit back in September that it would be his “dream” to play for a Champions League club after Manchester United and Liverpool were linked with swoops.

Last week, The Athletic reported that a fee of around £50m will be demanded by Brighton if they are to let their midfield maestro depart after three-and-a-half years on the south coast. In that time, the 25-year-old has impressed massively, with Gary Linker labelling him “exceptional” last April.

Steven Gerrard will be gutted

Although a deal for Bissouma may be completed in the summer, Gerrard will be desperate to add a quality midfielder to his ranks, especially with Marvelous Nakamba expected to be out until April with a knee injury.

At 6 foot in height, the Malian would offer more of a physical presence in the Villa midfield, with regulars John McGinn (5 foot 10) and Douglas Luiz (5 foot 9) shorter than the Brighton beast.

Moreover, according to SofaScore, the 25-year-old has averaged a rating of 7.21/10 in the Premier League this season. That’s significantly superior to Luiz’s 6.95 and Nakamba’s 6.65, although McGinn is averaging a slightly better 7.35.

Last season, Bissouma made an impressive 104 tackles and 64 interceptions in 36 Premier League appearances, an average of 2.9 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per game. This term, the Malian has improved, averaging 3.6 tackles and 1.9 interceptions per match, whilst also posting a 71% dribble success rate and 89% passing accuracy.

As for McGinn and Luiz, the former is averaging 2.7 tackles and 0.8 interceptions per match, whilst the latter is lagging behind with 1.7 tackles and 1.1 interceptions.

It is clear as to why numerous clubs, including Villa, are circling around the Brighton midfielder and why his price tag is substantial. There is little doubt that Bissouma would improve Gerrard’s midfield, but the 41-year-old may have to be patient if he wants to bring the Malian to Villa Park, or else look elsewhere if an immediate solution is required.

As it stands, the manager may well be gutted that his team’s chances of landing the 25-year-old this month appear slim at best.

Villa hope to sign goalkeeper in January

Aston Villa are hopeful of adding another goalkeeper to their ranks this month, The Athletic’s Gregg Evans says.

The lowdown

On Friday, Villa announced that they had agreed a deal to make FC Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho the first signing of the Steven Gerrard era, but it doesn’t look like they’re stopping there.

In terms of goalkeepers, Gerrard currently has Emiliano Martinez, Jed Steer, 20-year-old Viljami Sinisalo and teenager Filip Marschall at his disposal.

Martinez is the clear no. 1, but he was rested for both of Villa’s EFL Cup matches and was unavailable for the Premier League trip to Chelsea, with Steer standing in.

The latest

After they Johan Lange wrapped up the Coutinho loan, Evans tweeted that ‘Villa also want’ a ‘keeper and ‘may send younger stoppers out loan’.

They’d also like to bring in a full-back, with Bologna’s Aaron Hickey a target.

The verdict

It’s hard to imagine that Martinez is under any real threat. After all, this is a goalkeeper who was nominated the Yashin Trophy last year.

Instead, it seems more likely that Villa want an upgrade on Steer, someone who can push Martinez just that little bit more.

The Englishman wasn’t overly impressive when he got his chance in the league, conceding three goals at Stamford Bridge against a post-shot expected goals of only 1.8.

As a result, Villa may not be confident in him if Martinez is missing for a stretch of games.

In other news, this man is nearing a move away from Villa.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Wilfried Zaha call-up

Crystal Palace confirmed on Thursday afternoon that star man Wilfried Zaha has been named in Ivory Coast’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

And, as to be expected, a number of Eagles fans have been reacting to the news on social media.

Zaha, who has missed just one Premier League game this season, has been selected in a 28-man squad despite refusing to join up with his country back in November and will therefore be unavailable for Patrick Vieira in the New Year.

Ivory Coast take on Equatorial Guinea on January 12, Sierra Leone on January 16 and Algeria on January 20 in the tournament’s group stages. Should they progress and make it all the way to the final, Zaha wouldn’t be available until February.

The Eagles have four fixtures in January, with Zaha definitely out against rivals Brighton on January 14 due to his international commitments.

Palace fans react

Palace shared the news on their official Twitter page. This is what these supporters had to say in reply, with more than one ‘gutted’ and one labelling January as a possible ‘rough’ month.
