Gayle not surprised by Watson antics

Ricky Ponting will warn his players to tone down their on-field behaviour

Ricky Ponting will warn his players to tone down their on-field behaviour after Chris Gayle declared he wasn’t surprised by Shane Watson’s over-the-top celebrations because he “didn’t expect anything better” of him. Watson was the third Australian player to be fined by the match referee during the Perth Test, which also featured a two-ODI suspension for Sulieman Benn, and left Australia’s players embarrassed by their actions. The West Indies camp was upset by the disparity in penalties and has not ruled out pursuing the matter further, and Gayle’s feelings were plain when he declined to comment on Benn’s ban. “I might be the person getting the ban as well, you might not get anymore interviews,” he said. However, Gayle said he was not shocked by Watson’s antics when he had Gayle caught behind and then moved close to the batsman and cheered excessively.”Not really, he’s that sort of person,” Gayle said. “I didn’t expect anything better, so that’s typically Shane Watson, he’s a passionate person. That’s how he expresses himself but maybe he just overdid it a bit, but that’s Shane Watson.”Watson was fined 15% of his match fee, while Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson were slugged 25% and 10% respectively after their run-in with Benn. Johnson clashed physically with the West Indies spinner and Haddin inflamed the situation by pointing his bat angrily at Benn and engaging in a verbal stoush. The reports followed a reprimand in Adelaide for Doug Bollinger, who had kicked the ground in anger when he had an lbw appeal denied. Ponting said the three men who were fined in Perth knew they had crossed the line, but he would sit down with the entire squad before the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan to reinforce how they should behave.”We all have responsibilities,” Ponting said. “It’s one of my responsibilities as the captain to make sure that guys aren’t overstepping the mark. Definitely this week when we get down to Melbourne as a group together it will happen in our first team meeting, we will go over some of the events of this week.”I’m not proud of the fact, I’m sure the players aren’t proud of the fact either, that we’ve had three guys reported in the one game. Reports are something we’ve been really strict on the last couple of years, that’s amongst the player group ourselves. And we’ve actually got a good record on that over the last couple of years. I know all the guys are a bit embarrassed probably and know they’ve overstepped the mark.”Despite the incidents, Gayle insisted the match had been played in the right spirit and aggression was a good thing for the game. There was certainly plenty of passion and fierceness from his 200-centimetre spinner Benn, who did not back down when he was targeted verbally by Haddin. Benn is often seen singing when not playing the game and was described by the Australians as “unusual”.”He is unusual,” Gayle said. “Benny has always been himself, that’s how he plays cricket out there. He will talk and these things give him an extra drive to be competitive. He’s a competitive person. He’s sometimes miserable at times, too.”

HBL continue winning run

A round-up of the third day’s action of the eighth round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2009-10

Group A

Habib Bank Limited eased to a ten-wicket win over Pakistan International Airlines in Islamabad. They gained a lead of 123, and bowled out PIA for just that score with left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman increasing his match haul to ten wickets by taking 4 for 31. HBL are at the top of the Group A table with six wins from eight games.Karachi Whites, after gaining a lead of 215, decided to impose the follow-on on Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited in Karachi. SNGPL put in a better performance with the bat in their second innings, reaching 353 for 8 at stumps, thanks to three half-centuries from their batsmen, and got into the lead; they are only 138 ahead though, with Misbah Khan taking five wickets.Pakistan Customs capitulated to the bowling of Uzair-ul-Haq at the National Ground, losing by an innings and 23 runs against National Bank of Pakistan. Uzair took 6 for 67, and despite opener Jibran Khan’s 98, PIA failed to erase the deficit of 219. NBP are now third on the Group A table.Four-wicket hauls from Shakeel-ur-Rehman and Dilawar Khan helped Sui Southern Gas Pipelines Limited bowl out Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited for 345 but not before they had gained a lead of 81 at the Gaddafi Stadium. In reply, ZTBL were struggling at 80 for 4 at stumps.Rafatullah Mohmand scored 148, Ali Azmat made 87 and there were important contributions from the lower order that boosted Water and Power Development Authority to 462 in Rawalpindi. In reply, Khan Research Laboratories had reached 71 for 2 with Saeed Anwar jnr unbeaten on 40.

Group B

Rauf Akbar and Nasrullah Khan combined to derail Abbottabad and record a mammoth 420-run win for Islamabad at the Diamond Club Ground. Chasing an improbable 502 for victory – set largely due to Umair Khan’s 194 – Abbottabad were bowled out for just 81. As a result, Islamabad moved to fourth place in the Group B table.Centuries from Naved Latif and Zeeshan Asif propped up Faisalabad to 465, and a lead of 164 against Hyderabad at the Niaz Stadium. In reply, Hyderabad had eaten 144 runs into the deficit with nine wickets in hand.Lahore Ravi progressed to 295 for 7 at stumps on the third day and secured a lead of 24 against Rawalpindi at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Lahore Ravi were boosted by half-centuries from Wahaj Aslam, Sohail Ahmed and Mohammad Asim.Quetta sealed a 114-run win over Multan in Okara but are placed ninth in the points table. Quetta’s own batting was abysmal, as they were bowled out for 100 – Ansar Javed took 6 for 34. But they had managed a lead of 233, and thanks to the efforts of Arun Lal, who took 4 for 45, they managed to skittle out Multan for a paltry 119.Faisal Khan was the star for Sialkot, as he smashed 205, and was supported by captain Mohammad Ayub, who made an unbeaten 166, in a score of 522 at over five-an-over against Peshwar at the Jinnah Stadium. Sialkot gained a lead of 227 but Peshwar, led by the openers, started in encouraging fashion, reaching 95 without loss at stumps.

Alegria goal for Rangers B

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left buzzing over some news on Juan Alegria.

As per the official website of the Ibrox faithful, Alegria scored two goals at Rangers Training Centre as Rangers B won 3-0 against Partick Thistle in the 2021/22 City of Glasgow Cup.

Ross McCausland scored the opening goal, but it was Alegria in particular who caught the eye after his brace.

The 19-year-old had already scored a hat-trick earlier on in the season, and given that the Teddy Bears already have a Colombian striker in Alfredo Morelos, who has become a hero at the club for all of the goals and iconic moments, it is exciting to see another youngster seemingly with huge potential coming through the ranks.

These Light Blues were left buzzing as the news of Alegria’s second goal was shared on Twitter, with one Gers supporter even going as far as to claim that he is a ‘baller’:

Sunderland handed major injury setback

Despite managing to secure a 2-1 away win against Cambridge United in their latest League One match at the weekend, Sunderland have been dealt a potentially massive injury blow which will surely leave a lot of Black Cats fans gutted.

What’s the news?

Speaking after the game at Cambridge, Sunderland manager Lee Johnson revealed that Luke O’Nien will have to have an operation to fix a shoulder injury that he has apparently been struggling with for most of the campaign, and has suffered repeated dislocations.

Johnson then revealed that this will keep the midfielder, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £5k-per-week according to Spotrac, out for a minimum of three months but potentially up to nine months depending on how much work it needs to fix his shoulder.

This will not only be a big setback for O’Nien and the team in the long-term if he has to spend a significant number of months on the sidelines, but it’s also a massive blow to the team right now considering how O’Nien has had to fill in at left-back in recent weeks due to the other current injury issues Sunderland have.

With 21 appearances under his belt for Sunderland across all competitions so far this season with an overall performance rating of 7.16/10 in the league, making him Sunderland’s second-highest rated player according to WhoScored, this highlights just how valuable and important O’Nien has been for Johnson.

Also, with O’Nien racking up an average of three clearances per game, 1.9 tackles per game and 1.4 interceptions per game in League One so far this season, this shows just how important he has been for Sunderland and why his absence is a crushing piece of news for supporters.

The manager will not only have to hope that O’Nien will not be out for longer than the estimated minimum of three months, but he will also be hoping that the other injured players, particularly full-backs in Dennis Cirkin, Niall Huggins and Denver Hume will be able to get back to action as soon as possible to keep the side in the race for promotion.

Tottenham make move for Kulusevski

Tottenham Hotspur have made a move in their bid to bring Dejan Kulusevski to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by SportMediaSet (via Sport Witness), who claim that Fabio Paratici has made contact with both Alessandro Lucci – the 21-year-old’s agent – and Juventus regarding a move for the winger in the winter market.

The report goes on to state that, at present, Spurs are looking to secure the Sweden international on loan. However, the Serie A side would prefer to move the forward on permanently, with the Italian giants believed to be commanding around €35m (£30m) for the youngster.

A further report by Calciomercato then revealed that Tottenham sent scouts to watch the former Atalanta man in action on Saturday, as well as suggesting that Paratici’s former relationship with the player – who he signed for Juventus – could prove crucial in Spurs’ negotiations.

Conte could “achieve incredible things” with Kulusevski

While Kulusevski has struggled to cement a place in Juventus’ starting XI since his £31.5m move to the Turin side back in January of 2020 – starting just 38 of his 72 appearances for the club – it is undeniable that the 21-year-old is a player who boasts a serious amount of potential.

Indeed, after being sent on loan to Parma back in 2019/20, the £31.5m-rated man proved over his 36 Serie A appearances just how much of a success he can be when given the opportunity, scoring ten goals, registering nine assists and creating a whopping 13 big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 2.2 key passes per game – the joint seventh-most in the league that season.

These returns saw the £78k-per-week winger – who is also capable of operating in central and attacking midfield, as well as on either flank – earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.14, ranking him as Parma’s second-best performer in the top flight of Italian football.

Cristiano Ronaldo is clearly also a very big fan of the Swede, stating of Kulusevski during his time at Juventus: “He is a great talent. He will help us to win and achieve incredible things. I really like to see him, he has great potential, and he’s an excellent player. I hope to play with him and score a lot of goals together.”

As such, considering his undoubted ability and positional versatility, the 21-year-old would very much appear to be a player with whom Conte could mould into a world-class talent, leading us to believe that Paratici must do all he can to secure a deal for Kulusevski this winter.

West Indies 'devaluing' Champions Trophy – May

The Champions Trophy will be devalued by West Indies sending a substandard team, according to Tim May

The Champions Trophy will be devalued by West Indies sending a substandard team, according to Tim May. Floyd Reifer will captain West Indies in the tournament, which is supposed to featured the world’s top eight teams, after the continued failure of mediation efforts between the West Indies Cricket Board and its players.”I would suggest that the West Indies’ insistence on picking a third-rate side devalues that tournament and that pain is going to be shared by the rest of the cricketing nations,” May, the chief executive of the Federation of International Cricket Associations, told the . “I’d also suggest they are in breach of their agreement with the ICC, which says they must pick their best-available team.”The absence of 13 of West Indies’ leading players, including the captain Chris Gayle, led to the side being humiliated at home by Bangladesh in the recent Test and ODI series. The prospect of West Indies sending a weakened outfit on their next Test tour, to Australia in November, has begun to raise concerns in Australia about the quality of cricket that will be played this season.”When they take their team abroad and treat the Champions Trophy as no more than a bargaining chip in their negotiations, then I think we have got some problems,” May said. “The Australian tour is coming up later this year and there is no indication that the West Indies Cricket Board are going to select their best team and, in fact if they did, my understanding is a significant number of the West Indies players would refuse to come because they have had enough of the West Indies Cricket Board and how they have treated the players.”The first Test is in Brisbane starting on November 26. A Cricket Australia spokesman said the situation was being monitored but there was not yet any reason to believe that the series would not go ahead as planned.”Naturally we are concerned about the situation, however Cricket Australia is monitoring the situation very carefully and we are hopeful they will resolve their issues soon,” the spokesman said in the . “The reality is this is an issue for the West Indies Cricket Board to resolve along with their players’ association.”
