Reports have suggested that Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips could favour a move to Liverpool instead of Manchester United, due to the Whites’ rivalry with the latter club.
The Lowdown: Phillips on the move?
The 25-year-old has matured into one of the most influential midfielders in the country, not only thriving for Leeds but also winning England’s Player of the Year award and playing a central role in their run to the final of Euro 2020.
Phillips’ quality, couple with the Whites’ struggles so far this season, may suggest that his head could potentially be turned by a move at the end of the campaign.
The Leeds midfielder has been tipped to join Liverpool in the past, and a fresh rumour has now emerged regarding the situation.

The Latest: Liverpool over United?
According to The Daily Star, Phillips believes that a mooted £60m move to Manchester United would leave too much bad blood at Leeds, considering the dislike that both clubs have for one another.
It is mentioned that Liverpool could duly be viewed as a better option, with the midfielder potentially joining the Jurgen Klopp revolution at Anfield.

The Verdict: Hard to keep him
While it is painful for any Leeds fan to accept the idea of Phillips wanting to move on – England manager Gareth Southgate has hailed him as ‘magnificent’ – he may feel that he has come as far as he can at Elland Road.
His loyalty cannot be questioned and it wouldn’t be a massive shock if he saw out his contract until 2024 out of respect for the Whites, but it feels most likely that he will move elsewhere soon.
Having acquitted himself so well on the big stage for England during the summer, Phillips belongs at a Champions League-playing club in order to go up another gear. Liverpool would be ideal, with their pressing and possession-based game perfect for the Leeds hero, who is averaging an 83.7% pass completion rate and 2.6 tackles per game in the league this season.

As first impressions go, Joe Denly’s maiden ODI innings of 67 from 111 balls was harder to quantify than it really deserved to be

As first impressions go, Joe Denly’s maiden ODI innings of 67 from 111 balls was harder to quantify than it really deserved to be. For starters, his international baptism wasn’t quite on a par with that of Jonathan Trott at The Oval last week – a soggy field in Stormont could not remotely replicate the intensity of that Ashes decider, while his opponents were not England’s oldest and most storied foes, Australia, but a spirited if limited Ireland team who utilised their home conditions to good effect, yet were still found out in the final analysis.Nevertheless, it was a performance brimful of promise, and from a 23-year-old opener whose credentials have been touted with knowing regularity for the past couple of seasons, that is about as much as England could possibly have wished for. Denly is a man whom English cricket wants to see succeed. Born in Canterbury and brought up in nearby Whitstable, he has developed through Kent’s age-group levels from Under-12s onwards, and is seen in some parts as a one-man affirmation of an often-maligned county system that has been undermined of late by gripes about imported talent. The early evidence needs a second opinion, but already he looks as though he’s made of the right stuff, technically and mentally.Though the Man-of-the-Match award eventually went to Ireland’s Trent Johnston for an allround performance that all but condemned England to defeat, it was Denly’s mature assessment of a potentially dire situation that proved to be the difference between the sides. “It was a bit tense to be honest, we were always chasing the game,” he said. “But Owais [Shah] got a few wickets for Middlesex last week with his offspin, he came on and took come crucial wickets, and we managed to scrape home in the end. It was a good victory.”England’s captain, Paul Collingwood, admitted after the game that he had misread the conditions when he won the toss and chose to bat, and Denly had not even got off the mark by the time Ravi Bopara and Trott had been dismissed for ducks to give Ireland a flying start to the contest. But he did not bow to the pressure of the situation, nor to any expectation of quick counterattacking runs. Instead he did what he has done throughout a season in which he has been averaging more than 50 in limited-overs cricket, and played each ball on its merit, including a gorgeous cover-drive from the 21st ball of England’s innings, which also happened to be their first runs off the bat.”It was a very tough wicket,” Denly said. “The ball was sticking and driving was particularly tough, especially on the front foot. We lost a couple of early wickets which wasn’t great so it was a matter of building and getting up to a competitive total, and we thought 200 was so. Trent Johnston bowled very well, he’s a very experienced bowler and I suppose those conditions suited him very nicely. He just bowled a good length, nibbled it around, and found Ravi’s edge and caught Trotty on the crease.”Prior experience of the Stormont wicket undoubtedly helped Denly to settle in, however, especially as he came into the game with happy memories of batting on this track. “I got my first one-day hundred for Kent here [in 2007], so I’ve enjoyed coming back again,” he said. “But it did feel like an international debut, I was on a high to get that first one under the belt and I’ll remember this day for a long time. I was a bit nervous, there were a few butterflies, but then excitement took over, and I was just really pleased to get the opportunity to play. It was a fantastic day.”It must, however, have been a peculiar environment in which to make one’s international debut, with six of the squad still buzzing from their exploits in the Ashes, while trying to overcome an unmistakeable air of resentment at the timing of this contest. Denly, though, insisted that their professionalism had shown through, and that there had been no problems getting himself geared up for this match.”It’s been brilliant, they made me feel really welcome,” he said. “They’ve had a fantastic week and this is a bit of a change from five-day cricket to one-dayers and Twenty20s at the weekend, but they’ve all done it before and I’m sure they are looking forward to it. Coming into any international team is quite exciting, but an Ashes-winning one is even more exciting and I’m very proud. They’ve played together for quite a while but they are still on a massive high, and we’re taking a lot of confidence from that.”After the match, Collingwood praised the maturity shown by his young opener, who has surely done enough already to challenge for a starting place in England’s seven-match ODI series that gets underway at The Oval next week, especially seeing as he has already impressed against the Aussies this summer, making twin scores of 66 and 36 for the England Lions in a hard-fought Ashes warm-up fixture in Worcester back in July.He may have to wait his turn for a while, however, with Andrew Strauss set to resume at the top of the order, and the beleaguered Bopara unlikely to be judged too hastily for his Belfast duck. But Denly’s place in the Champions Trophy squad has already been confirmed, and with England’s management desperate to move the team’s mindset on from the recent glories of the Ashes, another young and hungry challenger is exactly what a much-criticised batting line-up needs to propel its performances. And to that end, a role in England’s winter campaign in South Africa is what Denly now has in his sights, especially given the problems that Alastair Cook has suffered with his technique against the new ball all summer long. “I’ve got my one-day cap now and I want a few more, but Test cricket is the ultimate, and that would be fantastic,” he said. “My aim is to play for England, as many games as I can, and the more you play the more experience you get at playing against the top bowlers in the world. If I can put in some good performances in one-day cricket, then hopefully that will stand me in good stead.”
Ganhamos lá e empatamos aqui, somamos quatro pontos. Ainda estamos no caminho certo – completou o atacante.

The injuries that Celtic duo Nir Bitton and Stephen Welsh suffered on Thursday aren’t thought to be too serious, The Scottish Sun have reported.
The Lowdown: Ferencvaros knocks
Ange Postecoglou’s side ran out 3-2 winners in the Europa League in Budapest, guaranteeing some sort of European football in the New Year. However, the Hoops, who are already without Christopher Jullien and Carl Starfelt, lost two more players who can feature at the back.
Bitton, who Neil Lennon hailed as a ‘good athlete’, went off with 12 minutes remaining, whereas Welsh described as ‘excellent’ by Celtic podcaster Paul John Dykes, followed him off in the final minutes.
It now seems as if the pair may well be fit for Sunday’s clash with Dundee, though.
On Saturday, The Scottish Sun’s Craig Mahood shared all the details for the Dens Park clash.
When it came to team news, he stated that Postecoglou was hopeful that Welsh’s injury wasn’t too serious, whereas Bitton’s reasoning for his substitution was down to cramp.
The Verdict: Bitton at the back?
Cameron Carter-Vickers has been an ever-present figure in green and white since signing, and he may well have to partner Bitton later today.
You’d expect that the 30-year-old, who has already played at the back on four occasions this season, will be ready to start if he was merely suffering from cramp on Thursday, but the Hoops may not want to risk Welsh.
He could be in line for a place on the bench if his injury isn’t serious as the club hope, and should they move Bitton into defence, that could open the door for James McCarthy, no stranger to injury issues himself, to come into midfield and feature from the off.

Celtic are interested in a deal to bring Marco Bizot to Parkhead in the January transfer window.
What’s the talk?
That’s according to a report by French media outlet Homme du Match (via The Scottish Sun), who claim that Ligue 1 side Stade Brestois are looking to offload their £5m summer signing during the winter window, before going on to state that Celtic are one of the clubs considering making a loan offer for the 30-year-old goalkeeper.
However, it is then reported that, despite Ange Postecoglou’s preference of a short-term move, Brest would not be willing to sanction the departure of the shot-stopper on a temporary basis – unless a mandatory clause to purchase the Netherlands international is included in the deal.
Nicholson must move
With it being reported recently that two of Celtic’s current options between the sticks, Vasilis Barkas and Scott Bain, look as if they will be on their way out of Parkhead this January, a move for a goalkeeper in the winter market would appear to be a rather necessary one for Michael Nicholson to make.
And, while it is true that Bizot has not been in the best form of his life over his 16 Ligue 1 appearances so far this season – with the 30-year-old averaging a SofaScore match rating of 6.67 – the Dutchman nevertheless proved during his final two campaigns with AZ Alkmaar that he would make a fantastic option for Postecoglou to be able to call upon at Celtic.
Indeed, over his 57 Eredivisie appearances over the last two seasons, the £4.5m-rated goalkeeper kept a whopping 27 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 2.4 saves per game – with these returns seeing the 30-year-old who has been nicknamed The Wall average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.97.
As such, a move for the £7.5k-per-week shot-stopper would indeed seem a highly advisable one for Nicholson to make this winter, as Bizot appears to not only possess the ability to be Joe Hart’s backup in the squad but also to push the former England international for his starting spot at Parkhead.

With an impressive 43 goals scored across all competitions so far this season, it’s safe to say Liverpool have not had any issues in front of goal in recent weeks.
Especially given how they have the likes of Mohamed Salah in their squad at the moment who has managed to rack up 15 goals in 12 games so far in his latest campaign with the Merseyside club.
Having said that, it seems as though the Reds could already have their next version of Salah in the youth squad with 20-year-old right-winger Jack Bearne.
Bearne signed to Liverpool’s youth side back in April 2017 from Notts County for a fee of £153k according to Transfermarkt.
Since then, Bearne has gone on to make 25 appearances for Liverpool’s U18 side, scoring four goals and providing one assist as well as making 29 appearances for their U23 side, scoring four goals and providing three assists along the way, proving himself to be a real attacking threat with a lot of potential.
Bearne, who has been previously described as a “hero” by Reds journalist James Pearce after the winger scored a late winner in a youth match against Everton back in 2018, has only made one senior appearance for the Reds which came during their 5-0 defeat against Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup back in December 2019.
Back in 2019, the club’s official website revealed that Bearne had put pen to paper on his first professional contract with the Reds.
So far this season, Bearne has made ten appearances for Liverpool’s U23 side in which he has managed to score one goal and provide one assist, whilst trying his hand at playing in the central-midfield and attacking-midfield positions as well as right-wing, showing his versatility at such a young age.
Moving forward, we feel that if Bearne can keep playing regularly for Liverpool’s U23 side and add some more goals and assists under his belt on a consistent basis, we think that he has what it takes to break into Jurgen Klopp’s side and become a star in the future based on the talent and attacking prowess he’s already shown in their youth teams.
However, taking into account the inspiring form Salah is in at the moment, it seems as though Bearne, or any other right winger across the Merseyside club, would have a hard time overtaking the Egyptian.
