The leaders Victoria dominated Tasmania’s bowlers as they turned what should have been a difficult day into an impressive total of 5 for 366 at Bellerive Oval. Sent in on a pitch expected to suit the fast men, the Bushrangers negotiated all of the early problems and the top three of Chris Rogers, Nick Jewell and Brad Hodge registered half-centuries.There were no rewards for the second-placed home side, which holds a two-point lead over Queensland, until after lunch as Rogers and Jewell put on 165 to eliminate Tasmania’s advantage at the toss. Jewell had a stumping reprieve on 32 off Jason Krejza, who was brought on before the break in an effort to make something happen after the quicks failed. The numbers of the openers were similar: both faced 143 deliveries, Rogers scored 82 with 13 boundaries and Jewell gathered 83 with 15 fours. Rogers nicked Brett Geeves to Tim Paine a couple of overs before Jewell was run-out by Jonathan Wells’ throw from square leg.David Hussey, who was caught short at the bowler’s end on 44, was also a victim of a run-out with Hodge as his partner. Hodge was undeterred by the setbacks and made his way to 79 before giving Paine one of his three catches. Cameron White had 23 when Geeves got his second breakthrough, but by stumps there were still some problems for the hosts, with Rob Quiney on 34 and Matthew Wade 11 not out.

Bowen’s transfer value rockets at West Ham

David Moyes’ second stint at West Ham United has so far been a very fruitful one.

The 58-year-old boss steered the struggling Irons to safety towards the back end of 2019/20 before guiding them into the Europa League last season – and until the weekend, they were unbeaten across all competitions in 2021/22.

A lot of that work has come down to his recruitment and coaching.

One of his first signings back at the London Stadium was Championship hotshot Jarrod Bowen, who joined in a £22m deal from Hull City on deadline day in January 2020.

He has been one of the standout performers for the Hammers ever since.

Bowen’s development over the past 18 months has been a testament to the Scotsman and his transformation in east London.

After flirting with relegation two seasons ago, Bowen’s value had dropped to a low of £18m but now it stands at a whopping £27m, which only goes to show his recent rise, as per Transfermarkt.

That increase of 50% is very much in correlation with his performances on the pitch.

The versatile 24-year-old attacker was West Ham’s third-highest goalscorer in the Premier League last season, scoring eight times in 30 starts, whilst he also provided five assists, via WhoScored.

He’s yet to get off the mark this campaign but he has still provided one assist and currently rates out as Moyes’ second-best player on the season, meaning he’s clearly doing so much more than putting up goals and assists.

Right now, Bowen is the most creative player in the Irons’ ranks, having averaged 2.4 key passes per game thus far, which is more than the likes of Pablo Fornals (2), Declan Rice (1.4) and Said Benrahma (1.4).

He’s even done so by plugging the gaps whenever Michail Antonio is unavailable too, so his ability to play in a multitude of attacking positions makes him an even more integral part of this squad.

Once described as “unplayable” by his former Tigers boss Grant McCann and as a “world-beater” by talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan, Bowen has been the epitome of West Ham’s incredible turnaround in fortunes over recent seasons.

It all comes down to Moyes and his phenomenal work at their Rush Green training base.

Marcelo Bielsa linked with shock Leeds exit

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa is believed to be under consideration for the Barcelona job, with Ronald Koeman on the verge of being sacked as manager.

The Lowdown: Bielsa transforms Leeds

The Whites have enjoyed a great period in their history and it has been largely down to the brilliance of Bielsa as a manager.

The Argentine guided Leeds back into the Premier League in 2019/20 and has arguably got his side playing some of the most vibrant attacking football in the division, even despite the poor start to this campaign.

Bielsa is adored by anyone of a Whites persuasion – he has also been hailed as ‘incredible’ by Mikel Arteta – and the hope is that he stays on as manager for years to come.

The Latest: Barca keen on Whites hero

According to Cuatro [via Sport Witness], however, Barca see Bielsa as a candidate to come in and replace Koeman, with the La Liga giants struggling hugely currently.

They believe that ‘if the offer is good’, the Leeds boss’ head could be turned.

The Verdict: Man of his word

Bielsa signed a new one-year deal in the summer and seems to be a loyal figure, so it would be a huge surprise if he upped sticks and suddenly left Elland Road in the near future.

It may be that the 66-year-old decides to move on at the end of the season due to the nature of the one-year deals he signs, but he will surely respect his contract and look to get his side’s stuttering campaign back on track.

Barbados close in on win

An interesting finish is on the cards in Barbados, with Guyana needing 289 with nine wickets in hand on the final day against Combined Campuses & Colleges. CCC gained the first-innings lead after Guyana’s last two pairs managed only ten runs. Fast bowler Kevin McClean struck both blows for CCC to complete his maiden five-for in first-class games.Nekoli Parris then struck his first first century as CCC piled on 300 for 5 before declaring their second innings. Parris built on a solid start from openers Romel Currency and Simon Jackson – both of whom were out in the 40s, offering catches to the close-in fielders off the spinners. Kurt Wilkinson retired hurt on 9 after he was hit on the hand by a delivery from medium-pacer Brandon Bess and the score was 189 for 4 when Floyd Reifer was trapped lbw for 6. Wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton, who made an unbeaten 51, then added 94 with Parris, who was dismissed for 105 by Veerasammy Permaul. Permaul was the pick of the bowler, with 2 for 25 off 12 overs.Guyana lost an early wicket, that of Shemroy Barrington, in their chase, finishing the day at 30 for 1.Windward Islands need another 194 to avoid an innings defeat against Barbados in Grenada. Windwards crumbled for 194 in their first innings after Barbados declared on their overnight score of 395 for 8. Rawl Lewis, the captain, played a lone hand, scoring 84 in a team score of 192. He struck 11 fours and two sixes in his 155-ball innings. Kemar Roach (3-33) and Tino Best (2-25) ripped through the top order. Lewis led the fightback with Shane Shillingford, with the duo putting on 63 for the seventh wicket. Corey Collymore got rid of Shillingford, and Ryan Hinds wrapped up the innings with his 4 for 36, with Lewis the penultimate batsman to be dismissed. Barbados enforced the follow on, and Roach quickly dismissed Devon Smith, coming into this game on the back of a double-century, for the second time on the day. Windwards closed the day on 9 for 1.A late three-wicket burst from allrounder Richard Kelly raised Trinidad and Tobago’s hopes against Jamaica in Port of Spain. Having dismissed T&T for 202, Jamaica were cruising at 136 for 2 when Kelly struck. Brenton Parchment led their reply with 54, with one-drop Donovan Pagon scoring 41. Kelly, who made an unbeaten 25 in T&T’s innings, struck thrice off his 9.5 overs as Jamaica finished the day at 148 for 5.

Plays of the day for the third day of the first Test in Perth

Eight is enough
Mitchell Johnson began the day with seven wickets and a rare opportunity to collect nine out of ten. When his bouncer accounted for Dale Steyn the chance to record Australia’s best Test innings analysis became tantalisingly close. Arthur Mailey’s 9 for 121 against England at the MCG in 1920-21 was the only time an Australian had grabbed nine in a Test innings. When Mark Boucher top-edged a skier the 88-year-old record looked set to go, but neither Brad Haddin running back with the gloves nor Brett Lee at fine leg could quite reach the ball. Peter Siddle eventually got the final breakthrough and Johnson’s 8 for 61 left him eighth on Australia’s all-time list. The case for a replay
A week after Billy Bowden gave the best possible advertisement for the referral system with a howler to give Paul Collingwood out caught off his pad in Chennai, Aleem Dar provided another compelling case for the introduction of more technology to help umpires. In the New Zealand-West Indies series the players have the right to refer an umpire’s decision to the TV official and Matthew Hayden would certainly have used the privilege had it been on offer in Perth. Hayden had spent 39 minutes labouring to 4 when he was given out caught and bowled after the ball lobbed off his pad and back to Dale Steyn. The umpire felt Hayden had hit it but there was nearly enough room to park a small vehicle between bat and ball. If the ICC’s elite panel has a Christmas party, Bowden and Dar can compare notes and perhaps eye exam results.Mission aborted
Paul Harris copped a few jeers from the crowd on the opening day when he repeatedly aborted his run-up, once because he swallowed a fly but several other times for no apparent reason. There were questions over whether it was the strong wind but Harris said that was not the case – after all, having grown up with the howling gales at Fish Hoek on the Cape Peninsula, the Fremantle Doctor seemed like a gentle breeze by comparison. In any case, there were no insects or zephyrs to blame when Harris couldn’t complete the run-up for his first ball on the third day. The WACA crowd remembered and a gentle jeer encouraged him to get his approach right for the next delivery.Bend it, stretch it
Back spasms have troubled Ricky Ponting in the past couple of years so there were some concerned faces in the Australian dressing room when Ponting seemed to be having similar problems during his innings of 32. He was squared up by a Jacques Kallis delivery that raced off the edge for four and immediately afterwards he was bending over to touch his toes, then thrusting his hands in the air and twisting from side to side. The physio Alex Kountouris hurried out at the end of the over but the news was good – Ponting’s back was not the problem. He had complained of soreness across his stomach and it turned out that he had a mild abdominal strain, although he was not in danger of missing any of the match or the Boxing Day Test.

West Ham: Moyes must promote Oko-Flex

Armstrong Oko-Flex continued his fine form for West Ham’s youth team this week.

The 19-year-old winger bagged the winner for the U21s against Ipswich Town in their Papa John’s Southern Group A opener on Tuesday night, which added to his three goals in four games in the Premier League 2 this campaign.

Oko-Flex was one of many signings this summer as David Moyes managed to secure him on a free transfer after his contract expired at Scottish giants Celtic.

Born in Dublin, the Republic of Ireland youth international is said to be ‘skilful, quick and sharp in front of goal’ and he cites players like Ronaldinho, the Brazilian Ronaldo and Jay-Jay Okocha as key influences growing up, so the Hammers could well have a very exciting starlet on their hands.

The teenager looked cool and collected as he stepped up to convert the winner from the spot in the final minute of regulation at Portman Road, and his impressive performance caught the eye of many supporters.

“Generational” and “star boy” were just two phrases used to describe him, whilst much of the Irons faithful were eager to see him promoted to the first-team, as relayed by Hammers.News.

And that’s exactly what Moyes should do.

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers was at Celtic Park when Oko-Flex arrived at the club and he lauded the youngster as “very talented” to the Celtic View (via The Scottish Sun).

We’ve seen in recent times that the former Chelsea coach knows a player when he sees one – you only have to look at the Foxes’ rise under his tenure to see that.

Oko-Flex caught the eye during pre-season and U23s head coach Dmitri Halajko waxed lyrical after his display against non-league Aldershot Town.

“His finishing is fantastic,” he said. “When he came on trial from Celtic, that was the first thing that really caught our eye in training, which was his finishing.

“He’s very clinical with really good technique and he’s shown that again tonight. He only had a couple of really clear-cut chances and he certainly made them count.”

A clinical player in front of goal, in a time that Moyes needs someone to provide the perfect foil upfront? It surely makes perfect sense to integrate the teenager into the first-team setup.

Having looked unfazed during pre-season with the senior squad, Oko-Flex must be promoted sooner rather than later. He could be a big help to the Hammers as the fixture congestion kicks in.

AND in other news, Moyes could save West Ham millions for years with 21 y/o who’s “one hell of a player”…

Bachmann’s woeful form continued

Daniel Bachmann has endured a tough start to life in the Premier League and his disappointing form continued with a shocking performance for Austria recently.

The 27-year-old shot-stopper established himself as first choice in Xisco Munoz’s side last season and was a regular for Austria at the European Championships as a result.

He has started all three of the Hornets’ top-flight fixtures so far this season and conceded five goals, with his distribution woeful at times, particularly in the games against Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur.

Although there was nothing he could do about John McGinn’s screamer or Danny Ings’ penalty in the opening day win against Aston Villa, he did play a huge part in Brighton’s second goal in the 2-0 defeat as his slack pass was picked off by Yves Bissouma who fed Neal Maupay for a comfortable finish.

The Austrian ‘keeper was guilty of giving the ball away on a number of occasions in the 1-0 defeat at Spurs, whilst Heung Min-Son’s winning goal perhaps got past Bachmann a little too easily.

Whilst Watford fans might want to see their team stick with Bachmann for a few more games before re-introducing Ben Foster, his recent performance for Austria suggests that he may well be suffering a crisis of confidence, and keeping faith in him for upcoming Premier League games could be disastrous.

The former Stoke City man started in goal as Austria faced Israel in a World Cup qualifier but performed woefully in a 5-2 defeat, with SofaScore ranking him a 5.1/10 for his performance, which was comfortably the worst of any player on the pitch.

Despite Israel’s domination, Bachmann would manage just two saves during the game, whilst his pass accuracy clearly wasn’t good enough again, as he completed just 68% of his passes during the game, with only two out of eight long balls finding their mark.

Therefore, after another less than impressive display, Xisco should drop Bachmann and give Foster the nod for the game against Wolves on Saturday.
