Tottenham closing in on Cristian Romero

Tottenham are in advanced talks to sign Cristian Romero in a double swoop…

What’s the word?

That’s according to football.london reporter Alasdair Gold, who delivered the exciting transfer claim at the start of the week.

“Tottenham are in advanced negotiations to sign Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta, football.london understands,” he wrote.

It’s thought that the Premier League side have ‘very strong’ interest in the 23-year-old centre-back and it’s believed that he is the leading candidate of all of Spurs’ mooted central defensive targets. Atalanta will have to activate their €16m (£13.8m) option-to-buy from Juventus a year early before selling him to the north Londoners for profit.

Sky Sports suggest that he could be available for around €40m (£34m).

Paratici masterclass

This could be the first real sign of what is to come from Fabio Paratici and his interesting methods in the transfer market. He reportedly likes to negotiate deals with multiple players for each position which needs filling before settling on the right man.

It now appears that Romero is the centre-back for which Nuno Espirito Santo will be longing, especially before the season gets underway on August 15.

Defensive mistakes and a lack of leadership resulted in Spurs recording the worst defensive record of any of the traditional ‘big six’ last season, and that’s something which needs to be fixed before their opening clash with Manchester City next month.

The £31.5m-rated colossus played a major part in Atalanta’s third-placed finish and capped off a phenomenal year, in which he was named Serie A’s ‘Defender of the Year’, with a Copa America triumph as he helped Argentina defeat arch-rivals Brazil in the final.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-team-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

His versatility and potential ticks plenty of boxes for Nuno. Romero is able to play as a two or as a three in the middle, and can also be deployed at right-back.

Indeed, the five-cap Argentina international ranked amongst Gian Piero Gasperini’s most consistent performers last term, with an average WhoScored rating of 7.14 bettered only by more attacking options.

Romero won a massive 3.6 aerial duels per game and also topped the charts for interceptions – a whopping 3.1 per match, which was the best average in the entire league. He also ranked first for such a statistic in the Champions League, too.

Furthermore, the 6 foot 1 Atalanta beast also managed two tackles per match and a seasonal 86.2% passing accuracy, via WhoScored.

These numbers suggest that he is a very solid and intelligent option and one who is very comfortable on the ball, something which should suit the attacking system Nuno is expected to play this season.

Italian football expert Conor Clancy waxed lyrical about Romero’s exploits during an exclusive interview with This is Futbol recently.

He said: “He has been phenomenal as he won the MVP award for the best defender in Serie A, but he is one of the most deceptively dirty players in the Serie A. However, when he has the ball, his distribution and passing is so, so good.

“Romero can pick out a 50-yard pass onto the foot of a striker perfectly but it’s something that goes a little bit unnoticed because his defensive work is so good and he is a top, top defender.”

Also described as a potential “phenomenal buy” for Spurs, it seems that the possible arrival of the Argentine sensation could help fix a hugely problematic and key area.

If Paratici manages to pull it off, it will be his first masterclass since his arrival earlier this month. It would certainly be one outstanding addition for a team which struggled defensively last season.

The Cameroonian is a hugely popular member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad, possessing a likeable character that rubs off on both the fans and his teammates.

Most importantly, however, Matip is an excellent centre-back when he is available, although constant injury problems have held him back.

SPCL 1 – Miller ten-year wait for ton keeps Andover top

Roger Miller struck his first league century for ten years as Andover beat Burridge by four wickets to maintain their lead at the top of the ECB Southern Electric Premier League

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)03-Jun-2002Roger Miller struck his first league century for ten years as Andover beat Burridge by four wickets to maintain their lead at the top of the ECB Southern Electric Premier League. He hit an undefeated 118 as Andover overhauled a Burridge total of 214-5 with eight balls of their 50-over match remaining.Miller couldn’t even recall his last Southern League century, except confirming "it was a long time ago." It was indeed – June 13 1992 : exactly 100 for Old Tauntonians against Longparish at the old Richard Taunton College ground in Southampton !Miller’s 118 not out at Burridge – an innings which contained 14 boundaries – carried Andover to their fourth win in five limited-over matches."We needed 40 off the last four overs and, with a few lusty cracks from Richard Taylor and Dean Woodhouse at the other end, got there with a bit of time to spare," Miller explained. The Andover captain spent all but three balls of the match on the field after coming to the crease with Andoverrocking after two early blows by Nick Creal and Paul Belverstone. But, supported by Ian Langdown (23) and several minor middle-order contributions, he turned the match, being particularly severe on Moeen Cheema, whose 4.4 overs cost 41 runs.Cheema made his mark for Burridge, hitting 73 in a promising start with Ian Williamson (38), which South African off-spinner Gareth Tate (3-30) interrupted.Paul Ancell (44 not out) and Chris Mepham (24 not out) took Burridge on to 214-5 – but it was not enough to spare the Whiteley club from a third defeat in four games.Luke Sears, who led Hampshire YCs to the ECB Under-19 County Championship several years ago, was the hero of Havant’s four-wicket win over Calmore Sports.Havant bowled Calmore out for 100, but crashed to 37-5 against James Hibberd (2-14) and Christof Bothma (2-37) before Sears launched his rescue mission.Almost single-handedly Sears, with an unbeaten 48, turned the tide for Havant, who had lost four wickets for only 11 runs on a difficult surface.South African Mackie Hobson celebrated his Hampshire Board call up for the forthcoming ECB 38-County Championship match against Surrey with a splendid 4-15 spell for Havant. The former Northerns and Natal medium-paceman ripped out three of Calmore’s top five, including top scorer Clive Surry (20), and then removed Stuart Bailey (19), who was trying to initiate a recovery.Bevis Moynhan (2-22) did his bit as Havant maintained the pressure on leaders Andover.Champions BAT Sports, who had lost two of their previous three games, bounced back with a 114-run mauling of lowly Portsmouth at St Helen’s, Southsea.BAT dictated the game from the off, with Richard Kenway (65) and Damian Shirazi (27) providing a 75-run platform for the middle-order.Warren Swan (3-31) created inroads, but Adam Hayes (25), Michael Watson (20) and Dave Banks added useful runs to lift BAT to 196-7.Openers James Moon and Lee Savident were the only Portsmouth players to make double figures as Raj Maru’s side, minus the influential Matt Keech, fell apart. They were bundled out for 82, with Kirk Stewart (4-18), more accurate with an older ball, ripping through after Shirazi (2-35) had dismissed both openers.Liphook & Ripsley continue to prop up the table after Russell Rowe’s powerful 90 set up a storming nine-wicket win for South Wilts at Ripsley Park.Liphook’s fragile batting crumbled again, with only South African Alistair Gray (20) making a fist of it against dual left-arm pacemen James Tomlinson (3-21) and Shaun Adam (2-12).They tumbled from 76-4 to 127 all out, with Rob Wade taking 3-13 with his military medium seamers.Rowe, last season’s leading Premier League run getters, wasted no time in launching South Wilts’ victory bid.He ruthlessly laid into the Liphook bowling, cracking a blistering 90 out of the first 114, leaving opening partner Paul Draper (27 not out) to complete the formalities.

Should Wolves sign Issa Diop?

Bruno Lage has been busy in the transfer market but you sense that the drama is only just beginning to unfold at Molineux.

A number of their key players continue to be linked with the exit door and if they do indeed depart, replacements will be required.

What’s the word?

The Old Gold’s outstanding transfer of the summer so far is Trincao. The Portuguese sensation has arrived on loan from Barcelona with an option to buy.

Although improving their threat in the final third is of utmost importance, they simply have to invest in their shoddy defensive line as well.

According to Foot Mercato, Wolves could be planning to do that by signing West Ham’s Issa Diop.

The report claims the defender caught the eye of Liverpool and Manchester United a few years ago but is now being chased by the Molineux outfit, Crystal Palace and Southampton.

The Frenchman is currently valued at £16.2m via Transfermarkt.

Jesus Vallejo 2.0

It’s no secret that Wolves’ defensive record in 2020/21 was incredibly poor.

They conceded 52 Premier League goals which was only one less than relegated Fulham. There was also a period between October and January where they kept a grand total of just two clean sheets.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-ceballos-zinchenko-euros-felix-lage” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

Diop has plenty of potential and he proved that when he first arrived in English football. A dominating presence with height and brute force, Jose Mourinho described him as a “monster.”

However, the centre-back’s career has taken a turn for the worse in the last 12 months. He only started 15 matches in the top-flight last term as he struggled to nail down a consistent place in David Moyes’ side.

What might be more concerning, however, is comparisons to Jesus Vallejo.

The Real Madrid defender signed on loan back in 2019/20 and was seen as quite the coup given his football education.

Though, his spell in the Midlands was a complete disaster as the Spaniard only managed two league appearances before heading back to Spain in January.

If you scroll down a list of similar players to Diop on FBRef, an in-depth analytics website, Vallejo’s name appears second on the list. But why is that? Well, their ability to read the game when being dribbled at isn’t the greatest.

Last season, Diop tackled 33.3% of players who tried to take him on while Vallejo managed to successfully challenge 28.6% of opponents. For context, let’s compare those numbers to Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool in 2018/19. During that season, the Dutchman was successful with a whopping 92.9% of the tackles he lodged on players dribbling against him.

The two players in question also make a similar number of recoveries. The Hammers’ defender made 7.25 per 90 minutes last campaign compared to Vallejo’s 6.8.

The latter’s period in the Midlands did not go according to plan so the idea of signing a similar sort of defender is unlikely to be taken too well.

That said, Diop does already have experience of the Premier League and English football. That could save him if he makes the move.

Sri Lanka reach highest-ever Test total at Lord's

Sri Lanka cantered towards yet another daunting first-innings total as England were condemned to a second day chasing leather at Lord’s in the first Test

Stephen Lamb17-May-2002England lost the important wicket of Marcus Trescothick after Sri Lanka declared on 555 for eight at Lord’s in the first Test. Although their bowlers kept to a more consistent line than yesterday, England again found wickets hard to come by as Marvan Atapattu (185) Aravinda de Silva (88) and Russel Arnold (50) kept the crowd entertained while amassing their team’s highest-ever Test total on this ground. England closed on 27 for one in reply. After a starting with a flourish (and two off-side boundaries) off Nuwan Zoysa, Trescothick was undone by a ball that left him down the slope, edging a catch to Sanath Jayasuriya at first slip. Michael Vaughan and Mark Butcher then saw England through to the close. This morning Atapattu picked up from where he left off last night, flicking the first ball from Hoggard to the mid-wicket boundary. He completed his 150 with a rasping cut, and Hussain then missed de Silva on 37 at first slip. It was academic, as Flintoff had over-stepped. Sri Lanka’s doyen of batsmen celebrated with a dreamy drive to the cover boundary.Hoggard replaced Caddick but was punished again by Atapattu, with boundaries through square leg and extra cover. The Sri Lankan opener was missed (on 163) in the same over, Flintoff failing to hold on to a low chance to his left at second slip. He then missed de Silva off Caddick in the next over, an edge from a flashing cut finishing at the third man boundary. On reaching his 50 de Silva enjoyed further good fortune, edging a flashing drive off Cork wide of second slip to the rope at third man.It took a short, leg-side delivery from Cork to break through, as Atapattu failed to get on top of a hook and Marcus Trescothick had plenty of time to position himself for the catch at long leg. Atapattu and de Silva had added 146 for the fourth wicket, just three runs short of Sri Lanka’s best against England. Atapattu’s 185 included 24 fours and came off 351 balls. The left-handed Arnold then resumed normal service, finding the cover boundary twice off Flintoff, then cutting another as the same bowler dropped short in his next over. Caddick’s return lasted just four overs for 20, including a fierce hook from de Silva, which was deflected several yards off a boundary board. As the sun broke through the haze Arnold responded warmly, taking two to third man with a delightful cut.A push to mid-wicket off Vaughan took Arnold through to 50 (87 balls, seven fours), and in celebration de Silva swept Vaughan behind square to the rope beneath the Father Time clock tower. Arnold perished as he had lived – in pursuit of quick runs – as an upper cut off Hoggard unerringly pinpointed the ubiquitous Trescothick, who again made no mistake at third man. The return of Cork resulted in de Silva (88) following Arnold back to the pavilion eight balls later. It was a soft dismissal, a short, leg-side delivery brushing the batsman’s glove on its way through to Stewart.Vaas fell for six, driving loosely at Cork for – guess who – Trescothick to pick up the catch at gully. Zoysa then delighted the crowd – doubtless arousing rather different sentiments in Hoggard – with a brace of hooked sixes into the Tavern in one over.Zoysa (28) was out in similar fashion to de Silva earlier in the day, getting an inside edge as he tried to glance an innocuous-looking delivery from Flintoff to give Stewart a straightforward catch. Tillekeratne and Buddika then saw Sri Lanka to 555 for eight before Jayasuriya declared. The England bowling figures did not make pleasurable reading.
