The Ashes: England dominated the 19th Century

Australian teams had made nine trips to England in the 19th Century in 1880 , 1882 , 1884 , 1886 , 1888 , 1890 , 1896 and 1899

Arshad Chughtai03-May-2001Australian teams had made nine trips to England in the 19th Century in1880,1882,1884,1886,1888,1890,1896 and1899. England overwhelmingly dominated this era by winning seven Test Series and Four Test Matches. The home team won the First Test Match in England played at the Oval from 6-8 September 1880 by 5 wickets. Dr WG Grace whose influence on the game is proverbial, scored the first century for England (152). Two summers later a seven-run victory by the Australians at the Oval in August 1882 helped originate the ‘Ashes’. England convincingly won the series in 1884, 1886, 1880, 1890, and 1893. The low scoring Test Series in 1896 was closely fought but England prevailed 2-1. JT Hearne (5/76) claimed the first ever hat-trick for England in the Ashes. Australia won the first 5-Test Series, the last of the 19th Century, by a 1-0 margin. The interesting highlight of the 3-Test rubber in 1888 was that the series produced only 1111 runs by both teams, Australia contributing only 507 in six completed innings. At Lords, during the series, 40 wickets fell for an all time low aggregate of 291 runs. 27 of these 40 wickets fell on a single day, 17th July, the 2nd day of the Test Match. Six weeks later the shortest complete ‘Ashes’ took place at Old Trafford involving only 6 hours and 34 minutes of batting time with Australia’s second innings of 70 lasting just 69 minutes.During this era England were led by Lord Harries, A Shaw, AN Hornby, AG Steel, WG Grace and AE Stoddart. WL Murdoch, HJH Scott, PS McDonnell, JM Blackham, G Giffen, GHS Trott and J Darling captained the visiting Australian teams.Notable performers on both sides during the Australian tours of England in 19th Century were:
For Australia: WL Murdoch, FR Spofforth, GHS Trott, JJ Lyons and H Trumble
For England: WG Grace, AG Steel, KS Ranjitsinghji, HGraham, T Richardson, GA Lohman, R Peel and J Briggs.

Sunderland: Charlie Wyke offered Stadium of Light exit route

Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke has multiple contract offers from elsewhere as he ponders his next move, as reported by the Sunderland Echo.

The Lowdown: Black Cats set for fourth consecutive League One campaign

Sunderland face an uphill rebuilding task, as they prepare to enter their fourth consecutive season in Sky Bet League One [BBC].

Though the Black Cats have not yet braved the summer transfer market, they have been linked with making a permanent swoop for Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Dion Sanderson following his loan spell at the Stadium of Light in 2020/21 [Football Insider].

However, outgoings may well prove to be their first concern moving into the new campaign – a successful clear out could lead to a more productive quest for incoming signings.

The Latest: Celtic, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough all keen on the 28-year-old

Presently, Wyke is allegedly being courted by Scottish giants Celtic, Nottingham Forest and former club Middlesbrough [Sunderland Echo], but the report claims he could now have even more offers.

Contractually, he is free to negotiate with other clubs and will become a free agent at the end of this month unless he pens a new deal with the North East side [Transfermarkt].

The report states the 28-year-old has had an offer of a contract extension with Sunderland.

Celtic, who will participate in the Champions League qualifying stages soon, have a long-standing interest in his services dating back to April [Glasgow Live], so perhaps they will emerge as an early front runner.

The Verdict: Sunderland cannot afford to lose Wyke just yet

Without doubt, Sunderland cannot afford to lose Wyke this window. Scoring an incredible 30 goals in 53 appearances in 2020/21, his efforts were instrumental in the Wearside outfit’s promotion push [Transfermarkt], regardless of some poor moments which frustrated fans.

Not only that, Wyke’s ability to occupy opposition backlines with his physical presence has also been an important element of the Black Cats’ play, successfully winning around 4.8 aerial duels every 90 minutes across last campaign [WhoScored].

Labelled as ‘brilliant’ by assistant Sunderland coach Jamie McAllister [Chronicle], it is not hard to see that his departure would leave a huge void that needs to be filled – finding a 30-goal striker is not exactly easy.

In other news, a former Sunderland striker is now a free agent.

Pakistan's glory is New Zealand's misery in first Test flogging

It is still possible, despite all the modern technology, management systems and payment structures that cricket’s qualities can over-ride all that is explainable

Lynn McConnell12-Mar-2001It is still possible, despite all the modern technology, management systems and payment structures that cricket’s qualities can over-ride all that is explainable. When it is so often New Zealand’s opposition that seems to be able to do the unexplainable, it makes what happened at Eden Park today amongst the most unpalatable cricket fare imaginable. From a Pakistan point of view it was glorious. A young, fresh team, defying claims of disunity of purpose and unleashing several new stars on the world stage. As for New Zealand, it was damnably frustrating. So little application, dedication and maturation that it will be a major mission to recover.Beaten by 299 runs by Pakistan, New Zealand lost eight wickets for 10 runs in 62 minutes today.Their last nine wickets fell for 26 runs, one of the least memorable statistics in New Zealand cricket history, 26 being the least number of runs scored in an innings by any side.Chasing 431 runs for victory, it would have been improbable and a world record had they achieved it, one of the greatest statistics in the game as it represents the number of Test wickets taken by the chairman of selectors Sir Richard Hadlee, New Zealand never gave themselves a chance. To see a side fall over as New Zealand did so limply today defies description. It is New Zealand’s second worst collapse in its history. New Zealand’s team of 1946 lost eight wickets for five runs in their first innings against Australia at the Basin Reserve. And even in New Zealand’s dismissal for 26 by England in 1955/56, New Zealand lost eight wickets for 17 runs.It was 62 minutes of mayhem, as off spinner Saqlain Mushtaq took four wickets for three runs from 12.4 overs bowling unchanged from the western end of the ground and the surprise package of the day, Mohammed Sami, taking five wickets for six runs in seven overs. He utilised the reverse swing approach which he had been developing over the last four or five months under the tutelage of Pakistan’s great bowlers Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming said: “It was a pretty devastating spell of bowling.”We will work on it this afternoon. We have to move forward in a positive way.”We will look at the computer system.”Fleming added that it wasn’t only the wicket-taking deliveries that made life difficult for the batsmen, there were a number of opportunities when they played and missed other good balls.Saqlain had been able to get a massive amount of purchase on the ball while Sami and Waqar had been moving it both ways.”You have to admire the skills they possess in their side,” he said. The fourth ball loss of Mark Richardson had a big part to play in New Zealand’s capitulation.Still on his overnight score of 59, he launched into a cover drive against Saqlain and was easily held by Imran Farhat at close cover.Nightwatchman Paul Wiseman did his job, hanging around for eight runs before he was out, but his departure set in train the domino effect. He was bowled by Sami.Mathew Sinclair, on 10, attempted a pull shot from Sami but guided it to Youhana at square leg who held the catch at his second attempt.Nathan Astle played back to Saqlain and was bowled for one.Stephen Fleming went well down the track to play a defensive shot to Saqlain, missed and was correctly adjudged leg before wicket for five runs.Craig McMillan spent 31minutes attempting to get off the mark before launching into an on drive from Sami only to be caught by Saqlain at mid on diving to his right to snare a fine catch low down.James Franklin looking to survive a king pair, did get past a big shout for leg before wicket from Sami first ball, but lasted only two balls more before being comprehensively bowled by Sami.Daryl Tuffey was then bowled by Sami next ball with the last ball of the over.Adam Parore took a leg bye from the third ball of the next over bowled by Saqlain and Chris Martin was bowled next ball, his first, for the last five batsmen to fail to score. It was the worst day all of these players will endure in Test cricket. The challenge will be to see how they respond.

Utpal stars as Bengal defeat Bihar

Veteran left-arm spinner Utpal Chatterjee’s best limited overs bowlingperformance helped Bengal to overcome Bihar in the penultimateencounter of the East Zone One-Day Ranji Trophy tournament at the EdenGardens today

Sakyasen Mittra09-Dec-2000Veteran left-arm spinner Utpal Chatterjee’s best limited overs bowlingperformance helped Bengal to overcome Bihar in the penultimateencounter of the East Zone One-Day Ranji Trophy tournament at the EdenGardens today. Chasing a paltry total of 114, Bengal suffered a scarebefore getting home by five wickets. Chatterjee had figures of fivewickets for four runs in 5.2 overs. Bengal will now meet Orissa intheir final group league match tomorrow. That game will decide theteam to qualify for the Wills Trophy. On a pitch that was uneven and had variable bounce, Bihar won the tossand decided to bat. Initially, they were rocked by Lakshmi RatanShukla’s spell who sent back three batsmen with only nine runs on theboard. The Bihar side was rescued to an extent by Kunjan Sharan andRajiv Ranjan, who added 71 runs for the fifth wicket. However, Chaterjee changed the complexion of the game with a superbbowling display. Introduced in the 29th over, Chatterjee had Sharanbowled with one that came in with the arm. The rest of the batsmenthen failed to cope with him on a pitch where the ball bounced andkept low. From 110 for four, Bihar lost their remaining six wickets in45 balls for the addition of only four runs. The match seemed as good as over at this stage. But Bengal too wererocked initially by a controlled spell of medium pace bowling by MohirDiwakar and Dhiraj Kumar. They bowled their full quota of 20 overs andhad Bengal on the mat by dismissing four of their leading batsmen withonly 52 runs on the board. Of the four however, Devang Gandhi andSrikkant Kalyani could have avoided playing the shots that broughttheir dimissals. Both Diwakar and Kumar bowled with a lot of fire.Bengal managed to recover through Rohan Gavaskar and Deep Dasgupta.Gavaskar only scored 23, but saw out the remainder of the overs thatDiwakar and Kumar had. A lovely straight drive off Rana Choudhury wasthe shot of the match. However, he fell trying to flick Angushaman Rajover square leg, Nikhilesh Ranjan judging the catch to a nicety on the30-yard circle. The Bihar bowlers also made Bengal’s cause easier bygiving away 34 extras. Of these, 25 came from no balls and wide balls. The Bengal selectors have decided to replace opener Arijit Bose withleg-spinner Wrichik Mazumdar in their match against Orissa tomorrow.Lakshmi Ratan Shukla will open the innings. Skipper Devang Gandhi saidthat he to introduce more variety in the attack, Mazumdar has beenincluded.

Nash, Lee pilot Blues to much-needed win

The New South Wales Blues have defeated the Western Warriors in convincing fashion, securing for themselves a much-needed win and four crucial points, in the Mercantile Mutual Cup match at the North Sydney Oval today

Felicity Shea04-Feb-2001The New South Wales Blues have defeated the Western Warriors in convincing fashion, securing for themselves a much-needed win and four crucial points, in the Mercantile Mutual Cup match at the North Sydney Oval today. It was very much a case of going from the ridiculous to the sublime for the Blues today. At the outset, the writing appeared to be on the wall. Michael Slater (0) was dismissed courtesy of a questionable caught behind decision within one minute of arriving at the crease. Then Brad Haddin (13) was surprised by a blistering delivery from Darren Wates (1/34 from five overs) and made his exit in the third over. But, from there, the Blues went on to score 8/302 and to completely overwhelm the top-ranked Warriors. The total was surprisingly big and no-one was more surprised than captain Shane Lee, especially when it came to tail-ender Don Nash’s (61*) incredible turn with the bat. Nash posted the second fastest fifty in the history of Australian domestic one-day cricket when he used just twenty-four balls to score a half ton, smashing three fours and five sixes in the process.”With about ten overs to go I would have been happy with 260, and I said that to the team. Then Nash played unbelievably. He’s always been able to hit the ball cleanly and some of the shots he was making out there, he’s obviously a really good striker and it was his day. I’ve never seen an innings like that before. But I hope to see a few more, especially as captain,” Lee said.In fact, Lee’s only disappointment for the day was in not doing away with the visitors in time to score the bonus point as well. Ultimately, the Western Australians averted that prospect when they scrambled up to a final total of 242.”It would have been nice to get rid of them for under 240 and get that bonus point. It may make a difference towards the end of the season, but overall I’m very happy. The boys played very well and the bowlers stuck to their job very well,” he added.Lee played a pivotal role in the victory, scoring 115 off 140 deliveries, but most importantly keeping his head when all around were losing theirs. Hanging onto a partner became a problem for him around the twenty over mark, before he was finally able to build a ninety-six run partnership with Graeme Rummans (29). Lee’s steady, but prolific, rate of scoring boosted the Blues and while they suffered a minor late blip, losing four wickets – those of Rummans, Lee, Scott Thompson (7) and Shawn Bradstreet (1) – in the space of four overs, Nash strode in and delivered an amazing finishing touch.Nash was typically low-key when discussing his attention-grabbing first one-day appearance of the year.”Shane just said to get a quick thirty so I set out to do that and it paid off. I’m definitely a tailender, I love batting,” Nash said.”It’s just a confidence thing. I’ve scored a couple of thirties (already this season) and so that really gave me the confidence.”The value of such a decisive win is in the confidence boost it gives the players, and Lee said this victory would help enormously in the vital match against Tasmania at the SCG in a fortnight’s time.”I think everyone contributed well. Brad Haddin had probably his best performance ever behind the stumps, so it’s unlikely that any changes will be made for the next game,” Lee said.”Tasmania won’t be easy, but everyone really lifted and I hope they can do it again.”For their part, all the Western Warriors could do was play defensively. They set out to chase an almost-impossible target with determination, but found their rivals too dominant. Captain Tom Moody’s departure at the end of this season to take on the position of cricket director at Worcester has given added impetus to the Warriors’ desire to secure the Cup again this summer. It is to be his last on Australian soil and also his last as a player altogether. That kind of motivation usually serves well, and Moody has done exceptionally so far, guaranteeing the Warriors a place in the Final already. But some days just aren’t as good as others. The bowling figures looked reasonable for the most part, particularly the contribution delivered by Brad Hogg (3/49 off seven overs). But it was simply the case that there was not enough support.Simon Katich (72) shaped as the Warriors’ key batsman, and seemed in dangerous touch from the first ball he faced. Together with Murray Goodwin (44), he looked like pulling off another amazing batting feat as they set out on a rapid run scoring flurry. However, the required run rate, which began at 6.04, only climbed higher and the sense of urgency induced some elementary mistakes. Katich ultimately fell to a lbw decision and, with him, went any real chance the Warriors had of turning the match around. When Goodwin succumbed only four overs later – around the loss of Moody in the meantime – the Warriors really didn’t have much hope.Hogg’s 27 showcased his all-round skill but wickets fell with too much regularity toward the end for it to be fully appreciated.Regardless of today’s outcome, the Warriors still have a place in the Final. The Blues now have a better chance of meeting them there.
