Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon and the 10 uncapped England players who can force their way into Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad

The Three Lions boss has been loyal to his favourites during his tenure, but there's still time for new faces to join the fray ahead of the tournament

Incredibly, we are now in the penultimate international break before Euro 2024 kicks-off. And, in truth, it's got off to a pretty torrid start for Gareth Southgate. Having already seen guaranteed starter John Stones ruled out through injury, he also lost Jude Bellingham, James Maddison and Callum Wilson to knocks before a ball had been kicked. This has led to several uncapped players being handed maiden call-ups.

With only a few games left until the tournament begins, Southgate should really be fine tuning things, as opposed to having to deal with the arrival of several players who have not been involved in the senior set-up before.

While it's frustrating, it also teaches a valuable lesson about international football. As much as you can plan and prepare, things can change very quickly – and not just because of injuries. Poor form can also lead to a squad drastically changing ahead of a tournament, even if Southgate has attempted to fester a club-like atmosphere during his time at the helm.

Thus, it's never too late for someone to come out of nowhere and force their way into the conversation. Below, GOAL takes a look at 10 uncapped players who will be hoping to do exactly that over the next few months…

    Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa)

There have been calls for Konsa to be included in the England squad for some time. The ex-Charlton man has been a near ever-present for an upwardly-mobile Aston Villa side over the past few seasons, and he recently revealed that he never gave up hope of receiving the nod from Southgate.

"I knew I had a lot to work on in my game. Only recently now, the last two seasons, we’ve excelled at Villa and that part of it has helped me become the player I am today," he said. "I knew my time would come, but it was just a matter of when. I was patient, and I’m proud and me and my family are really happy."

Now Konsa is here, he'll take some shifting. Although competition for places is rife, with Marc Guehi, Levi Colwill, Fikayo Tomori and Lewis Dunk among those vying to act as back ups to likely first-choice pairing Harry Maguire and Stones, Konsa has been playing the best football of his career this season, thriving in a leadership role under Unai Emery following an injury to Tyrone Mings.

    Anthony Gordon (Newcastle)

Gordon did not enjoy the best start at Newcastle after joining from Everton last January, scoring just once in 16 Premier League games and also falling out with manager Eddie Howe. An impressive showing for the triumphant England team at the Under-21 European Championship over the summer has proved to be the turning point, though.

Since helping the Young Lions lift the trophy, Gordon has been starting regularly for the Magpies, both domestically and in the Champions League. If he can increase his goal and assist output, there's a genuine chance he can squeeze in the Euro 2024 squad, particularly with Raheem Sterling out of favour and Marcus Rashford badly struggling for form.

  • Getty Images

    Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton)

Everton lost their first two games of the season, which led to Branthwaite being drafted into the side in place of Michael Keane. Since that switch, the Toffees have been defeated in just four of their following 10 matches, moving eight points clear of the relegation spots as a result.

It's not all down to Branthwaite, but the 21-year-old's rock solid defensive partnership with James Tarkowski has gone a long way to helping Sean Dyche's side surpass expectations in recent weeks.

"He seemed to be quite an assured character, quite a calm character. I like that in all players, but particularly in centre-halves. His adaptation has been clear to the pace and the detail of Premier League football. He continues to improve, and physically he is a good specimen," Dyche said recently.

Perhaps Euro 2024 is slightly too early for Branthwaite, but if England are hit with some unfortunate injuries, taking him for some tournament experience would make a great deal of sense as he looks set to earn a shed load of Three Lions caps during his career.

    Cole Palmer (Chelsea)

Chelsea's decision to spend big on Palmer last summer was widely dismissed as a misstep by both player and club. But the Manchester City youth graduate has wasted little time proving any doubters wrong, capping off a fine start to the season by netting a decisive penalty to earn the Blues a point against his former club recently.

Things got even better for Palmer soon after, with those aforementioned injuries to Maddison, Wilson and Bellingham creating enough space in the squad for his maiden Three Lions call-up. The attacker admitted to thinking it was a "blag" at first, but there's a decent chance he's handed minutes against either North Macedonia or Malta as there's nothing but pride on the line.

In the long-term, he's also firmly in the conversation for the Euros squad. Capable of playing on the wing or in an advanced midfield role, he's a guaranteed starter for the Blues and is showing he has the confidence to shine on the biggest stages.

Hatfield: Next to no chance of Watkins leaving Aston Villa

Aston Villa journalist Luke Hatfield has told Football FanCast that there is “next to no chance” of striker Ollie Watkins leaving this summer.

Earlier, it had been reported that Liverpool were interested in signing Watkins, with the Villa forward impressing in his debut Premier League campaign.

In 37 games, Watkins went on to score 14 goals to help his side to a respectable 11th-placed finish.

It makes Liverpool’s reported interest in the 25-year-old more than understandable. Hatfield, however, is not expecting a Villa Park exit anytime soon.

“I’d say there’s next to no chance that Watkins leaves the club this summer,” the Express & Star reporter said.

“I think he’s happy at the club, the club are obviously very happy with him and they hold him in the highest regard.

“Considering they signed him for around £30m last summer, they’d want a real upgrade on that fee if they were to even consider a sale, which I don’t think they would.”

Indeed, it is hard to imagine Watkins leaving Villa in this transfer window, even if a big-money offer does come in.

The England international, who was recently given his first cap by Gareth Southgate, has a contract until 2025, meaning Villa are under no pressure to sell.

Ultimately, you would have to imagine that Liverpool, or any other team looking for a Premier League proven striker, will have to look elsewhere this summer.

USMNT player ratings vs Germany: Christian Pulisic dazzles, but USMNT fail to impress against four-time World Champions Germany

The AC Milan star scored a stunner, but the U.S. ultimately crumbled against the No. 15-ranked FIFA side in the world rankings.

In the week leading up to Saturday's friendly against Germany, the U.S. men's national team discussed what an opportunity this was. It was a chance to make a statement, a chance to prove they can hang with the big boys of international soccer.

And hang they did, at least for a while. For the first 45 minutes, the USMNT went toe-to-toe with the Germans ina n open, attacking game. Both teams scored a goal, the USMNT through a stunning Christian Pulisic finish and Germany on a Ilkay Gundogan goal following a mazy Leroy Sane run. Both teams were also content to play on the front foot.

It was a half that showed, in some ways, how far the USMNT has come. The second half, though, showed how far the USMNT still has to go.

Niclas Fullkrug and Jamal Musiala scored goals within three minutes of one another, dooming the USMNT to a 3-1 defeat. While the USMNT was able to go toe-to-toe with Germany for stretches, they couldn't maintain it as individual errors doomed the U.S. to defeat.

Aside from Pulisic and Matt Turner, few USMNT players will leave Saturday's game feeling happy about their efforts as the U.S. squandered a friendly that everyone felt meant much more.

GOAL rates the USMNT's players fromPratt & Whitney Stadium…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Matt Turner (7/10):

Several spectacular saves. Needed more help on the first goal and could do nothing about the second. Overall, a good performance that kept the U.S. in it.

    Sergino Dest (5/10):

All of the attacking energy, as expected, but the defending definitely lift a bit to be desired. Could have done more on the opener and then held Fullkrug on for Germany's second.

    Tim Ream (6/10):

The solid veteran presence that everyone expected. Was fantastic on the ball and was the leading force in a USMNT defense that, for stretches, did well against Germany.

    Chris Richards (5/10):

Was skipped past just a bit too easily on the first goal and was unable to recover. For as good as he was in the summer, he was very poor here.

    Joe Scally (5/10):

Too many turnovers, including on Germany's third goal. Just a bit too sloppy against a team that can kill you for any mistake.

  • Getty

    Midfield

    Weston McKennie (7/10):

Was absolutely everywhere, particularly in the first half. Definitely the USMNT's best midfielder on the day as McKennie made plays on both side of the field throughout.

    Yunus Musah (6/10):

Had a chance to score but headed over the bar. Was one of the only good moments for Musah, who struggled to contribute much of anything on either end.

    Gio Reyna (6/10):

Was always only going to play one half as he was on a minutes restriction. Looked decent during his first 45 and definitely added a bit to the attack, but you also saw the defensive issues that could give Berhalter pause when it comes to playing him centrally.

  • Getty

    Attack

    Christian Pulisic (8/10):

What more can you say about that goal? An absolute stunner from the USMNT star, whose confidence from Milan has carried over. He had several other highlights, too, in what felt like a statement performance.

    Folarin Balogun (6/10):

Credited with the assist on Pulisic's goal but, let's be honest, he had little to do with that. Overall, though, just wasn't involved enough as it remains clear that everyone involved is still adjusting to him in the team.

    Tim Weah (6/10):

An unusually quiet game from the Juventus star, particularly as the game wore on. Had some good moments and he remains the USMNT's biggest threat in transition, but just didn't quite get enough going.

    Subs & Manager

    Luca de la Torre (5/10):

Offered very little in midfield, as the team got dramatically worse in that area in the second half.

    Ricardo Pepi (5/10):

Only got a handful of touches, and couldn't do much with them.

    Brenden Aaronson (6/10):

Was lively as always and was the only USMNT sub to really make Germany nervous.

    Cameron Carter-Vickers (6/10):

The game was on by the time he came on, but it was good to see the Celtic star get minutes after recently returning from injury.

    Johnny Cardoso (N/A):

Came on in place of McKennie to add a bit more energy to the midfield.

    Kevin Paredes (N/A):

Came on late in attack and was somewhat active. Will be a good learning experience for the youngster, even if it was brief.

    Gregg Berhalter (6/10):

You can't say he got his starting XI wrong, as the U.S. went toe-to-toe with Germany throughout. And the goal, largely, were down to individual errors. However, the U.S. needs to find a way to get more out of Balogun, and it's on Berhalter to figure that part out.

Axel Tuanzebe on West Ham’s radar

West Ham United could turn their attentions to Axel Tuanzebe this summer…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the reliable ExWHUemployee, who made an intriguing claim during a recent episode of his ‘The West Ham Way’ podcast this week.

ESPN believe the 23-year-old centre-back is set to ask Manchester United for a loan move to ensure he gets regular first-team football next season. Despite being highly rated at Old Trafford, he has found game time hard to come by.

And the London Stadium could be a potential destination, with Irons boss David Moyes said to be eyeing a central defensive addition in this transfer window.

“Speaking of Manchester United, it’s been confirmed that Axel Tuanzebe is available on loan.

“Now I do know that David Moyes likes him, so he could be someone who we potential look to loan with a clause to buy – that’s if we don’t get our other targets.”

The anonymous Ex has previously revealed that the likes of Burnley’s James Tarkowski, Duje Caleta-Car of Marseille and Nikola Maksimovic at Napoli are the main players of interest but they aren’t the only ones keen.

Lingard repeat

This could be an interesting signing to make, especially given the success of Jesse Lingard’s temporary stint in East London.

The 27-year-old attacking midfielder was restricted to only three cup appearances for United before Moyes took a chance on the England outcast in January.

He quickly showed the Premier League and Gareth Southgate exactly what he could do, finishing the campaign with nine goals and five assists, ranking as the Hammers’ second-best player, as per WhoScored ratings.

This success could be very appealing to both Tuanzebe and United as Moyes could get the best out of the young defender before he returns to his parent club to fight for a place.

The 6 foot 1 colossus, valued at just £7.2m by Transfermarkt, won promotion to the Premier League during his last loan spell at Aston Villa but he has been restricted to just 29 appearances in all competitions since then.

In the past, there has been a belief that Tuanzebe could develop into United’s next Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic, whilst Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has deemed him a “great leader” and a “tremendous defender,” via the club’s official website.

He may not be a signing as exciting as Lingard but Moyes could well repeat his masterstroke call to take the gamble on him by bringing his Old Trafford teammate to the Irons.

With interest mounting in the likes of Tarkowski and Maksimovic, Tuanzebe wouldn’t be a bad alternative option at all.

AND in other news, Moyes must now axe £16.2m-rated West Ham disaster who Husillos once dubbed “fantastic”…

How much for Mohamed Salah? Liverpool told price ‘they’ve got to accept’ amid talk of record-breaking transfer bid being readied in Saudi Arabia

Mohamed Salah continues to be linked with a transfer to Saudi Arabia, with Glen Johnson naming the price that Liverpool have to accept in any deal.

  • Reds reluctant to consider sale
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Egypt international forward is tied to a contract at Anfield through to 2025, but that has done little to curb the speculation regarding his future. Al-Ittihad are said to be readying a second approach for the 31-year-old that could see world transfer records smashed.

  • GettyImage

    WHAT THEY SAID

It would take a bid of that kind for Liverpool to consider parting with a talismanic presence, and former Reds defender Johnson has told of the figure that may get a green light: “If a Saudi club wants a player, then they’ll make it very hard for teams to say no to them because they’re prepared to offer crazy money. Mo Salah is not the Mo Salah of two years ago and if Liverpool receive an offer of £200 million, then they’ve got to accept it. Mo has smashed a load of records and has won everything with Liverpool, so it should be his decision. Does he want to continue challenging for major honours or does he want to play in a league that’s of a lower standard and earn an absolute fortune? It all depends on what Mo wants and if Saudi wants him and he wants to go, then it’s going to be very difficult for Liverpool to stop it.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pressed on whether Liverpool’s owners would run the risk of damaging their relationship with Jurgen Klopp were a sale to be sanctioned, Johnson added: “Yes, definitely. The manager is only as good as his players, so he’s going to want the strongest team possible. I’m not suggesting they’re going to but if the owners decide to sell Mo after the Premier League’s transfer window has closed, then that’s going to cause friction as Jurgen will be desperate to keep Mo. However, if Liverpool can sell Salah for £200 million and Jurgen can spend that money on four new players in either January or next summer then it’s not the worst thing in the world, but the owners and the manager need to be in the same camp.”

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Salah has spent the last six years at Liverpool, scoring 188 goals through 309 appearances that have seen him break countless records. His efforts have helped the Reds to Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Community Shield honours.

Real Madrid eye Dominic Calvert-Lewin move

When Farhad Moshiri sat down with Bill Kenwright and Marcel Brands a few months ago to speak about Everton’s recruitment, there would have been excitement in their words.

They were looking forward to a summer of Carlo Ancelotti flexing his muscle to strengthen the club’s hopes of Champions League football. However, life is never simple, especially at Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

Ancelotti is no longer the manager of Everton after he moved back to Real Madrid in a shock turn of events.

The Toffees have been on the lookout for a new manager but with talks to lure Nuno Santo or Rafa Benitez to the club stalling, they’ve been dealt a potential setback.

According to reports (via The Daily Mail), Everton’s former manager could return to rob them of their star striker; Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Madrid are apparently keen on signing the Englishman and a bid of £50m may be enough to tempt Moshiri and Brands into selling.

Huge blow on the cards

If Everton did go on to lose Calvert-Lewin this summer, it would be a catastrophic blow to the new manager and the club’s supporters.

The forward has come out of nowhere in recent years to become a real shining light at Goodison Park.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-transfer-nuno-conte-wood-marcelo” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

Last term ,he became the first player to score over 20 goals in a single season for the Toffees since a certain Romelu Lukaku.

Calvert-Lewin eventually ended the campaign with 21 strikes, form that earned him a place in England’s squad for the ongoing European Championships.

In terms of finding the net, the England striker was untouchable for Everton last term. He was the only player in Ancelotti’s ranks to find the net on double figures in the league as he led the line in dominant fashion.

With that in mind, fans of the club should be running for the hills if he departs. It would leave the Merseyside outfit desperately short in attack and there is no guarantee that a replacement would score as many goals.

When a club like Real Madrid have an interest in a player, it can often be worrying news for supporters of said player’s club and that is exactly the case right now for Everton.

Signed from Sheffield United for just over £1m, the club would be making a hefty profit but the financial gain of securing Champions League football for next term would significantly outweigh that.

Of course, finishing in the top four is an incredibly arduous task for Everton but their best chance of doing that is with Calvert-Lewin in the squad. They simply have to keep him.

AND in other news, Brands must seal Everton swoop for 6 ft 2 monster who plays like a “freight train”…

Villa yet to make move for McNeil

An update has emerged on Burnley winger Dwight McNeil, amid interest from Aston Villa.

What’s the talk?

According to Burnley publication Pendle Today, Burnley are yet to receive an enquiry or offer for Aston Villa target Dwight McNeil this summer. No club has touched base with the Premier League side over a potential deal for the England under-21 international, who Burnley are said to value at £30m.

Football Insider reported last month that Dwight McNeil is a player who is of interest to Villa. Dean Smith was said to be preparing an offer for McNeil, who is reportedly one of the club’s top transfer targets this summer.

Back in 2020, Burnley manager Sean Dyche hailed the “outstanding” winger and labeled him as one of the best young players in England. He told the Burnley Express:

“On a platform like today, I thought Dwight McNeil was outstanding.

“He has got to be one of the top talents in the country for me at the moment. The game is getting away from you and it is a hard day at the office, and he was different class.

“You could give him the ball and he was dribbling past three or four different players and carrying it.

“He was absolutely different class for me.”

Fans would love it

Johan Lange must now firm up Aston Villa’s interest in McNeil as fans would love it if the club managed to snap him up. Villa have already secured a deal to sign Emi Buendia from Norwich and McNeil could further strengthen their attacking unit behind Ollie Watkins, with Bertrand Traore and Jack Grealish already at the club. The Burnley winger could offer a different option to the likes of Traore and Grealish in the wide areas, as they tend to drift inside onto their stronger foot, whilst McNeil is a left-footed player who plays out on the left.

This means that McNeil could drive Villa up the pitch and get to the byline to put crosses in to Watkins and whoever else makes a run into the box, be it John McGinn, Traore or Douglas Luiz. Dean Smith would then have the option to switch up how Villa want to attack their opponents, be it from the start or off the bench, and this is why McNeil could be an excellent addition. McNeil has proven himself at Premier League level, with four goals and 11 assists since the start of the 2019/20 campaign for Burnley.

Villa now need to test the water and see how receptive Burnley are to any offers. As the initial report claimed, Burnley have not been tested as of yet and there is no harm in Villa putting out the feelers with an offer for the youngster. Worst case scenario, Lange wastes a few hours and then moves on to other targets. Best case scenario, Villa are able to tempt Burnley into a sale and Smith gains another talented forward player.

AND in other news, Lange must sanction Villa deal for “outstanding” 65-cap “leader”, Dean Smith needs him…

How do Man City replace Kevin De Bruyne? Lucas Paqueta, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the six alternatives after midfield star suffers serious hamstring injury

The treble winners have been dealt a huge blow after losing the talismanic Belgian until the end of the year

Manchester City always knew they were going to have their work cut out to try and match the achievements of last season after winning the treble. And now they will be without arguably their most important player for a huge chunk of the campaign after it was revealed Kevin De Bruyne may need to undergo surgery to treat a serious hamstring injury.

De Bruyne contributed to a stonking 42 goals last season, scoring 10 times and providing 32 assists. And he delivered at pivotal moments, grabbing the first goal in the title decider against Arsenal, firing in a stunning equaliser from long-range against Real Madrid in the first leg of City's Champions League semi-final tie, and setting up Ilkay Gundogan's winner in the FA Cup final against Manchester United, to name just a few instances.

City still have a squad capable of winning the Premier League and going deep in cup competitions, but things will be far harder for them without De Bruyne, who had also worked up a productive partnership with Erling Haaland.

GOAL assesses who should fill his boots for the next four months…

  • Getty Images

    Lucas Paqueta (West Ham)

City first declared their interest in Lucas Paqueta before De Bruyne suffered a relapse of his hamstring injury and now that the true extent of the injury has been revealed, they look even more likely to sign the Brazilian.

Paqueta does not have anything like the strike or assist rate of De Bruyne but in the last two seasons he has grown into an outstanding midfielder and has the self-belief to come in and take the Belgian's place in the City team.

His ability to thread passes through tight gaps make him a potential asset to Guardiola's side while the Catalan coach also admires his versatility. He will not come cheap, however. West Ham have rejected City's initial offer of £70 million ($89m) for Paqueta and are thought to be demanding as much as £90m ($120m).

    Julian Brandt (Borussia Dortmund)

City have done a lot of shopping at Borussia Dortmund lately, signing Erling Haaland, Manuel Akanji and Sergio Gomez from the Bundesliga side last summer. And Brandt would be a logical next target for them after spearheading the Black and Yellows' title bid, which fell agonisingly short on the final day of last season.

The Germany international can play behind the striker as a No.10 or on either side of the midfield three, and is hugely productive, scoring nine goals and providing eight assists last season.

  • Getty Images

    Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Napoli)

A year ago, very few football fans had even heard the name of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Flash forward to the present and the Georgian has turned into one of the most coveted players in the world after helping inspire Napoli to last year's Serie A title.

Kvaratskhelia, lovingly known as 'Kvaradona' in Naples, scored 12 goals and contributed 10 assists in 2022-23. The 22-year-old has breathtaking dribbling skills and is also a willing presser, winning the ball back in the final third 35 times last season.

City fans already have a lot of love for Georgian footballers after the success of Georgi Kinkladze in an otherwise dark period for the club, and they would undoubtedly welcome the country's latest star with open arms.

    Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen)

Florian Wirtz has been causing a stir since he was a teenager. The German attacking midfielder became Bayer Leverkusen's youngest-ever player in 2020 at the age of 17 years and 16 days, and contributed to 27 goals in his first two full seasons in the Bundesliga.

A serious knee injury in 2022 derailed his progress, but he has come back stronger and reasserted himself in Xabi Alonso's side, getting four goals and eight assists since returning. Signing him this summer would see City skip the queue ahead of what is likely to be quite the fight in the summer of 2024, if Wirtz remains a Leverkusen player until then.

'Magic on the field' – Nani on being inspired by Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi's MLS arrival, his future and the upcoming Beautiful Game

GOAL sat down with the Portuguese star to discuss a variety of topics as he returns to Orlando this weekend.

Even after all he's been through, all the success and trophies, Nani is still feeling a little bit star struck. A cornerstone of a Manchester United dynasty with Champions League, Premier League and European Championship trophies to his name, there are still moments that make him feel like a kid falling in love with the game for the first time.

This weekend is one of those moments. The Portuguese star is back in Orlando at his old stadium for the second iteration of the Beautiful Game, a superstar clash of legends and current stars. This year's game will, of course, include Nani, who will play alongside legends like Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Cafu and Rivaldo, as well as Vinicius Jr, Joao Felix, Eder Militao, Willian and Lucas Moura.

It's a who's who of superstars, with Nani having earned his place among them. Still, there's one player that the former Manchester United winger is most looking forward to playing with most, one that has inspired him throughout his career. That man, alongside Roberto Carlos, will be hosting the event and whose name will be on the marquee: the legendary Ronaldinho.

Ahead of the match, GOAL caught up with Nani to discuss how Ronaldinho inspired him, the upcoming Beautiful Game, his expectations for Lionel Messi in MLS and what's next in his career after becoming a free agent.

  • The Beautiful Game

    Inspired by Ronaldinho's magic

Nani remembers his clashes with Ronaldinho. He quickly points to the 2009-10 Champions League round of 16, when his Manchester United team got the better of the Brazilian's AC Milan. At the time, Nani was a 24-year-old rising star, already with a Champions League under his belt, but Ronaldinho's legendary status had already been cemented for some time.

All these years later, the Portuguese star admits that he always looked up to the Brazilian icon, and for good reason. Nani was always known for his dribbling and skill on the ball, with those attributes taking him right to the top of the sport. For a player with that skillset, is there a better role model than Ronaldinho?

This match, this Beautiful Game in Orlando, now gives Nani another chance to share the pitch with his idol once again. He played against him in last year's edition, a 12-10 win for Team Roberto Carlos, and he believes that Ronaldinho, even at age 43, is still a player with magic in his feet.

"A player I loved a lot during my youth and followed a lot when he was in his prime was Ronaldinho," Nani told GOAL. "I've always said that. Obviously now, playing with him at a time when he's not a professional anymore, he's retired already, but he still has the talent and the skills. It's always amazing to be there around a player that you used to appreciate a lot.

"The way he used to play, the way he made magic on the field, I copied him so many times and tried to learn from him. At this point, it's nice to have the opportunity to be next to him, talk a little bit, see the human side."

That's one of the most exciting parts of this game for Nani: the chance to share not just a game, but a weekend, with some of the sport's greats. It's an opportunity to take a step back from the battles that he's had with a few of them in the past and to, instead, kick the ball around with some heroes.

The game isn't about wins or losses, and everyone on the field knows that. All involved will instead play a bit more like Ronaldinho, with big smiles on their faces and a bit of confidence in their feet.

"This is a different type of game," Nani says. "It's not a game where there's pressure or where a player has to concentrate or do the maximum on the field. It's a game to enjoy, a game to make people excited with skills and having fun. It's a lot of smiles and a lot of good energy.

"The most important thing is to share the pitch with some people you used to follow in your youth. For me, it's good to be next to Ronaldinho and Roberto Carlos. Even the young players coming up right now, there will be some players there as well like Joao Felix and Vinicius, players who are shining in this moment. It's nice to share the pitch with them, have fun and try and show some skills on the field."

A return to the Lions' den

The Beautiful Game doesn't just give Nani the chance to play alongside his heroes. It also gives him the opportunity to return to Orlando and play in front of a fanbase that remains close to his heart.

Nani joined Orlando City in 2019, assuming the role of the face of the franchise following the departure of Kaka. He scored 31 goals in 88 games during his three-year stay in MLS, earning two All-Star selections during his time in the U.S.

He left the club after the 2021 season, playing six months for Serie A side Venezia before spending the 2022-23 season in Australia with Melbourne Victory. Now, two-and-a-half years after leaving Florida, it's safe to say he's glad to be back.

"It will be a special day for me to come back to Exploria Stadium, a stadium where I had so many beautiful moments in front of fantastic fans that supported me a lot when I was here," Nani said. "I'm looking forward to that moment. It means a lot to me."

He continued: "I was always trying to follow [Orlando City]. Obviously, I followed a couple of games. I saw Orlando's draw against Philadelphia, which is always a tough game. I do my best to try and follow the games, but I was so far [away in Australia] and the time difference makes a lot of difference and sometimes the games weren't on the TV, but I try to follow.

"MLS has been improving a lot with a lot of new players coming in the next few months."

'Messi will enjoy MLS a lot'

While Nani still has a special place in his heart for Orlando City, it's the Lions' rivals, Inter Miami, that have pulled off the signing of the century: Lionel Messi.

The Argentine is set to arrive in MLS this summer, becoming the biggest name yet to move to MLS. The league has had countless superstars, like David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thierry Henry, to name a few, but none are at the level of Messi, whose arrival promises to change the game in the U.S. forever.

It won't be easy, though, as many of the above names can attest to. MLS is far from an easy league, even for those that have dominated in Europe. It's fast-paced and physical, for sure, while players also have to adjust to the climate, travel and different types of turf.

Nani learned to adapt throughout his three-year stay, and he has no doubt Messi will, too, once he arrives in Miami.

"I think, for him, it will be a very good experience," Nani said. "You have to have the power to manage the small things that will make things difficult for him like turf and the long flights. He can manage that. He doesn't have to do it for all of the games. He'll enjoy it a lot.

"Playing in America was amazing for me and I think everyone likes the lifestyle here, and the momentum of the league is fantastic. For him and for the fans that follow MLS, it will be a very good time because he is a great player who can deliver fantastic football, and that's the most important thing."

Nani went on to reflect positively on his MLS experience as a whole, even if his own tenure was heavily impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Still, despite seeing most of the 2020 season derailed by Covid, he says the experience, as a whole, was fantastic and he found lifelong friends in Orlando.

"I enjoyed my time in MLS. Those three years were amazing," he said. "We had some bad moments where we had to manage Covid, but that was part of the good moments. Sometimes in life, you can't have everything perfect, and we all managed to learn from that. We did well, even when Covid appeared. We were able to train hard and continue to play the game. We found solutions and we were determined here in Orlando.

"What I can say is that my time in Orlando was fantastic, was perfect. I had a great time here, made a lot of friends. I enjoyed playing in MLS, so any player who has the opportunity to come here, they'll enjoy it as well."

    What's next?

As he prepares to take the field for the Beautiful Game, Nani says he is in great physical condition, despite a season-ending injury during his time in Melbourne.

The winger ruptured his ACL in January, ending his season prematurely after just 11 total appearances for the A-League side. He recently returned to the field at his former home, Old Trafford, coming off the bench for the World XI side in a 4-2 win over England in this year's Soccer Aid match.

With that experience under his belt, he says he feels good to go for the Beautiful Game and he hopes to put on a show.

"I feel good. I've been training, been preparing myself to be at my best," he said. "I had the game a couple of weeks ago, Soccer Aid, and I felt great. I'm excited for the moment to participate in this game because we are players and we want to play the game and do what we love to do: touch the ball, try some skills, score some goals and enjoy, because it will be an evening to make people happy and that's the most important thing."

As for what's next, Nani is keeping his options open. His contract with Melbourne Victory expired in May, making him a free agent. He says his plan is to keep playing for as long as he can and he believes that he still has what it takes to truly contribute to a team, even at 36 years old.

"For the moment, I feel like I'm just thinking about the game and playing until I understand that I have to decide and change my job," he said. "At this moment, I feel very good. I'm in condition to play and I can deliver a bit of quality as usual."

He'll get that chance on Saturday in Orlando as he joins some of his heroes in front of a crowd that has idolized him. After that, who knows?

"Until I feel I can't, I'll continue to play," he said. "As I've said, we all love this game, and we have to do what we love."
