    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After the current international break, Calafiori and Tomiyasu are expected to both be available for the Gunners, according to the Daily Mail. The duo's return will be a very positive one for Arteta as the Gunners have been struggling for form amid a number of injuries. Ben White has also been ruled out for a lengthy period after undergoing surgery earlier this month.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Arsenal have been suffering a bit of an injury crisis in defence this season as Calafiori, White, Tomiyasu, Jurrien Timber, Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Tierney have missed games through injury at least once this season. Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba have been the only defenders in the squad to not miss games through injury.

Fabrizio Romano – Chelsea open talks for "rapid" forward likened to Neymar

Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea have now opened talks to sign a "rapid" forward who's been likened to Brazil star Neymar.

Chelsea announce six signings in busy early summer transfer window

The west Londoners, helped by Todd Boehly and BlueCo's backing, have confirmed six arrivals already in defender Tosin Adarabioyo, young striker Marc Guiu, English starlet Omari Kellyman, midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Brazilian teenager Estevao Willian and Renato Veiga – who cost around £93 million in total.

Chelsea are set to sign Aaron Anselimino and Caleb Wiley as well for a combined fee of £25.5 million, which will then take their spending to near the £120 million mark.

Anselmino will be loaned back out to Boca Juniors once the 19-year-old seals his Stamford Bridge, with Wiley heading out on a temporary deal to Chelsea's sister club Strasbourg in France (The Athletic).

Yet more new additions could be coming through the door before deadline day on August 30, as it is widely reported that Chelsea are targeting a star new winger for manager Enzo Maresca as well as a potential striker.

There is also the possibility of Chelsea signing another centre-back after Tosin, with some reports even suggesting that Trevoh Chalobah could be used in a swap deal to Nottingham Forest stalwart Murillo.

Meanwhile, you can never rule out the notion of Chelsea adding another rising star to their books, having already brought in a succession of world football's brightest young talents since Clearlake Capital's takeover in 2022.

The Blues have looked to Brazil for a fair few of these prodigies, with Andrey Santos, Deivid Washington, Angelo Gabriel and, most recently, Estevao putting pen to paper.

According to Romano, it is believed Chelsea have their eyes on yet another one of the country's most exciting young players. Gremio's academy has produced some truly exceptional players in recent years, including the likes of Ronaldinho, Douglas Costa and Arthur Melo, with another teenager now making waves there in winger Gabriel Mec.

Born in 2008, the teenage sensation has already been compared to Neymar for his playing style by TEAMtalk analyst and scout Ben Mattinson.

"Neymar-esque play-style and comes from the same academy (Grêmio) as Ronaldinho. Hard to not be excited by him," wrote Mattinson on X. "Mec has rapid feet able to do skills so quickly that he can fool defenders easily. A joy to watch, he’s a real throwback Brazilian."

Chelsea open talks to sign Gabriel Mec from Gremio

Romano, taking to X, now claims Chelsea have opened talks to sign Mec from Gremio and want to find out the conditions of a deal.

"Understand Chelsea have genuine interest in Gremio talent Gabriel Mec," said Romano. "He’s considered as one more gem from Brazil; Chelsea have opened talks to understand deal conditions. Gabriel Mec is appreciated by many clubs but Chelsea are pushing."

The 16-year-old has also attracted serious interest from London rivals Arsenal and Ligue 1 champions PSG in the last 12 months (Lance), perhaps highlighting just how highly-rated he is already.

Imagine him & Summerville: Leeds join the hunt to sign prolific £20m star

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has had a difficult summer transfer window so far as he has already lost several members of his first-team squad.

Teenage whiz Archie Gray left to join Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur on a permanent deal, after his first season at senior level last

term.

Central midfielder Glen Kamara has also moved on from Elland Road to join Ligue 1 side Rennes, having only joined the Whites from Rangers last summer.

Farke will now be hoping that he does not lose any more of his key players from the 2023/24 campaign, particularly amid reported interest in star forward Crysencio Summerville.

Fabrizio Romano claims that West Ham United have submitted an initial bid in an attempt to sign the Dutch whiz, who is also wanted by Italian giants Roma.

There is no price attached to the offer or a mention of how much Leeds would want for the reigning Championship Player of the Season, though, and it remains to be seen how likely an exit is for the attacker at this stage.

If the West Yorkshire outfit can keep hold of Summerville, though, then they could land a dream partner for him as they eye a swoop for another star from the division.

Leeds interested in Championship ace

According to The Mirror (22/07/2024), Leeds have joined the hunt to sign Blackburn Rovers attacker Sammie Szmodics ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The report claims that both the Whites and Premier League side Ipswich Town are interested in a swoop for the Ireland international before the deadline passes at the end of next month.

Blackburn, however, are battling to keep hold of their star player and have gone as far as to offer him higher wages to tempt him to remain at Ewood Park for the forseeable future.

It adds that interest is growing in the Rovers forward, though, and that Leeds are now in the mix to sign him to bolster their attacking options.

Meanwhile, Ipswich reporter Stuart Watson claims that the Tractor Boys, who just earned promotion to the top-flight, have had an offer of £6m turned down by Blackburn for Szmodics.

The journalist adds that the Championship side are holding out for a staggering fee of £20m at this moment in time, which is more than three times as much as Ipswich's initial offer.

It seems unlikely that Leeds would spend £20m on a player as a Championship team but they should keep tabs on his situation and look to pounce later in the window if the forward decides to push for an exit and the valuation lowers, as he could be a dream for Summerville.

Crysencio Summerville's wing wizardry for Leeds

The Dutch attacker was crowned the Championship Player of the Season for the 2023/24 campaign thanks to his electric play down the wing for the Whites.

He won the award over Szmodics and Leicester City's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who has since signed for Chelsea, and this means that Leeds could end up with two of the best three players from the division last season by the end of this window.

Summerville came away with that trophy due to his fantastic ability to score and create goals on a regular basis from a left wing position for Farke's side.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old magician chipped in with a eye catching 28 goal contributions in 43 appearances in the second tier.

He also had a good reason to be frustrated with his teammates as they did not make the most of his outstanding creativity throughout the season.

Summerville racked up 12.53 xA and created 17 'big chances' for his fellow attackers but was only rewarded with nine assists, which shows that their wasteful finishing was to blame for him not getting into double figures for assists as well as goals.

These statistics suggest that Leeds should be looking to bring in a player with excellent and efficient finishing skills to make the most of the creativity that the flying Dutchman provides the team with on a weekly basis, which is why Szmodics should be signed.

Why Szmodics would be perfect for Summerville

The Ireland international could come in to be the perfect player to play alongside Summerville in the number ten position for Leeds, due to his fantastic finishing ability.

Making the most of chances was a huge problem for the Whites during the 2023/24 campaign, as was illustrated by the Dutch attacker's lack of assists in comparison to the quality of chances he created.

As you can see in the table above, Georginio Rutter and Patrick Bamford were particularly wasteful with the opportunities that came their way in the division.

Whereas, Szmodics scored 27 goals from 21.41 xG for Blackburn in the Championship, which shows that his finishing was considerably above average – as he outperformed his xG by almost six goals.

The 28-year-old star, who was described simply as a "goalscorer" by Jon Dahl Tomasson, scored 27 goals in 44 league outings as he proved himself to be a reliable source of goals in the second tier.

In fact, he ranked within the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Championship for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.62) – the highest total per 90 in the league.

This shows that Szmodics was one of the best goalscorers, particularly in his position, in the entire division last season and that is why he could be a fantastic signing for Leeds.

After Philogene: Aston Villa pursuing £50m star who’s just like Foden

Aston Villa are showing no signs of complacency in the current transfer window as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his first-team squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign – having most recently secured the return of academy graduate, Jaden Philogene, from Hull City.

With Villa Park hosting Champions League football, it is imperative that the club make the right signings in order to continue their recent upward trajectory.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

It looks as though the club are closing in on signing a current Barcelona player who has plenty of Premier League experience…

Aston Villa pursuing move for former Premier League star

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Villa are keen on bringing former Leeds United star Raphinha to the club this summer, with that interest coming amid the claims that Moussa Diaby's move to Saudi side, Al-Ittihad, is advancing.

Barcelona winger Raphinha.

It looks like the La Liga side are set to demand a transfer fee of around £50m in order for a deal to go through, and clubs such as Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal could be set to hijack the deal.

Emery will be hoping that the sale of Diaby, who has a price tag of £60m, can go through sooner rather than later, which would allow him to fund the signing of Raphinha.

It would be an excellent signing by Villa, especially as Raphinha is similar to one of the Premier League’s finest performers of last season – Phil Foden.

Why Raphinha could be Unai Emery’s very own Phil Foden

The Manchester City gem has won all there has to be won in the club game, despite just turning 24 in May.

Having made his debut under Pep Guardiola way back in 2017, the Englishman ended last season having scored 27 goals and registering 12 assists across all competitions.

Former Leeds forward Raphinha.

He even finished fourth in the standings for goals in the top flight last term, while even being named the Premier League’s player of the season due to his stunning displays.

Therefore, adding someone to his squad who is similar to Foden could help Emery’s side next term.

According to FBref, Foden is the fourth-most comparable player to the Brazilian gem and, given how impressive the City sensation has been in recent years, it would be an excellent piece of business to sign Raphinha this summer.

Indeed, the pair even registered similar statistics in their respective leagues last season, which included assists (nine vs eight), shots per 90 (3.62 vs 3.31), shot-creating actions per 90 (5.86 vs 4.54), successful take-on percentage (52.2% vs 46.1%) and crosses (82 vs 89).

Lauded by former Barcelona boss Xavi as an “extraordinary player” in 2023, the Brazilian enjoyed a decent enough 2023/24, scoring ten goals and grabbing 13 assists for the Catalan club, despite starting just 25 matches in all competitions.

During his two seasons in the Premier League with Leeds United, the 27-year-old netted 17 goals while chipping in with 12 goal contributions, showing that he has the required abilities to shine in the English top flight.

This makes the signing a no-brainer, which could give Emery’s squad a major boost heading into their first-ever Champions League group stage campaign.

Barcelona player ratings vs Celta: Hansi Flick's side throw away two-goal lead late on after Marc Casado sending off to cancel out red hot Raphinha's great work

Late sending off sees La Liga leaders surrender lead to draw despite superb performance from creator-in-chief Raphinha

Barcelona were dealt a bitter blow in La Liga by Celta Vigo's spirited fightback on Saturday night. The Liga leaders were 2-0 up and seemingly out of side but Marc Casado's sending off for two yellow cards stunned the Catalans, and they conceded twice in four minutes to throw three points away.

Celta opened Barcelona up in the first four minutes, but Iago Aspas could not convert from seven yards out after a superb delivery.

They were made to pay shortly after, as Raphinha sprinted onto Jules Kounde's speculative long ball and finished brilliantly.

Just before the half-hour mark, Aspas burst through on goal, but went down under the challenge of Gerard Martin but no penalty was awarded; Celta had a degree of success when they were direct, and merely aimed long balls over the Barcelona defence, with Inaki Pena in goal having to be at his very best.

On the stroke of half-time, Gerard Martin should have been sent off; already on a yellow, the full-back fouled Iago Aspas with a bad slide tackle, but the referee opted against showing a second card. Unsurprisingly, he was substituted at the interval.

In the second half, the game descended into a scrappy midfield battle, until Robert Lewandowski doubled the visitors' lead with a smart finish after being sent through by a fine Raphinha ball.

Raphinha could have had his second in the 77th minute as he again galloped away from Celta's defence, but his shot hit the post.

Shortly after, Marc Casado was sent off for a second yellow card, and Celta pulled a goal back through Alfonso Gonzalez. He robbed Kounde in Barca's area and finished coolly.

And with the Balaidos rocking, Celta equalised with a brilliant finish from Hugo Alvarez, earning a well-deserved point, and embarrassing their visitors.

GOAL rates Barca's players from Balaídos…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Inaki Pena (6/10):

Fantastic save to deny Moriba from range at 1-0 and was in superb form in goal, making a number of saves. Let down by Kounde and the rest of his defence as Barcelona's lead disappeared.

    Jules Kounde (4/10):

Great pass to Raphinha ahead of their first goal. Consistently chasing back when the ball went over his head and a dreadful error allowed Celta back into the game. You simply cannot lose the ball in your own box.

    Pau Cubarsi (5/10):

Ill-at-ease when it came to chasing back and got nowhere near Celta as they equalised. Fine on the ball, but he still has a way to go when it comes to becoming the finished article in defence.

    Inigo Martinez (6/10):

Always willing to put his body on the line. Not at fault for Celta's fightback.

    Gerard Martin (5/10):

Booked within three minutes for a terrible slide challenge. Had to battle with Aspas throughout the first half and was incredibly lucky to avoid a red card for a foul on the ex-Liverpool striker. Unsurprisingly subbed at half-time.

    Midfield

    Marc Casado (6/10):

Got just about everywhere, passing the ball and winning it back, consistently keeping Barcelona ticking. A superb midfield display until he was sent off for a second yellow card. His absence will be keenly felt.

    Gavi (5/10):

So smooth on the ball, if a little lightweight at times. Regularly knocked off the ball but he kept trying to make things happen. Subbed.

    Pedri (5/10):

Not as effective as usual. Passed the ball well enough but Celta's long ball tactics left him chasing shadows defensively. Subbed in the second half.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Attack

    Raphinha (8/10):

Superb finish to give Barcelona the lead. Fine assist for Lewandowski too and hit the post. Comfortably Barca's best player.

    Robert Lewandowski (6/10):

Peripheral until he was sent through by Raphinha and did what he does best to double Barca's lead. As a striker, sometimes you only need one chance. Subbed for Pau Victor late.

    Dani Olmo (5/10):

On the receiving end of a few agricultural challenges. Some smart touches but Celta's rough approach unsettled him. Subbed for Pablo Torre late on.

    Subs & Manager

    Hector Fort (5/10):

On for Martin at half-time. Played well until he was completely beaten in the build-up to Celta's remarkable equaliser.

    Frenkie de Jong (6/10):

On for Gavi. Barely had time to impact the game.

    Fermin Lopez (6/10):

On for Pedri just as the tide turned.

    Pablo Torre (N/A):

    On late.

    Pau Victor (N/A):

    A late sub.

    Hansi Flick (4/10):

Not reacting to Casado's sending off cost Barcelona here. One decision does not usually cost a side this dearly but his failure to do literally anything as the midfielder trudged down the tunnel was the precursor to a monumental collapse. He can have no hiding place; Barca didn't play well, and didn't deserve to win.

Arsenal target "incredible" £38k-p/w goal machine who’s better than Osimhen

It's hard to think of a more important season for Arsenal in recent years than the one set to start in three weeks, as Mikel Arteta's men look to finally dethrone Manchester City from the top of the Premier League.

The North Londoners have developed into one of the best teams in Europe over the last few years, but to truly solidify their incredible ascent, they must end their two-decade title drought, and to do that, Edu Gaspar and Co need to recruit the right players over the coming months.

Riccardo Calafiori's long-awaited signing was finally confirmed yesterday, but the area most fans want to see strengthened is striker, and based on recent reports, they may soon get their wish.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen

For example, Victor Osimhen has once again been touted for a move to the Emirates following the breakdown in his move to Paris Saint-Germain, but another centre-forward has also been linked with the club, who would not only cost less but would also be a better signing.

According to a recent report from the Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, Arsenal have firmly reignited their interest in Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres .

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

The report has claimed that while the Gunners have inquired about Osimhen's current situation, they are 'very focused on chasing the Swede from Sporting Lisbon'.

No price is mentioned in the story, but it has been widely reported that he has a €100m release clause in his £38k-per-week contract, which converts to about £84m. However, according to Fabrizio Romano via TEAMtalk, the Gunners would likely make an opening offer of around £60m.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

Signing Gyökeres will cost Arsenal a lot of money this summer regardless of whether they pay the full release clause, but he will cost less than the £109m Osimhen is said to cost and, given his performances last season, would likely be a better signing anyway.

Why Gyökeres would be a better signing than Osimhen

Okay, aside from the price – which is a significant factor – there are a few reasons why Gyökeres would be a better signing than Osimhen for Arsenal, and the first is that he is in red-hot form.

viktor-gyokeres-coventry-city-leeds-united-transfer-gossip-aaronson-49ers

For example, in 50 appearances last season, the "incredible" Swede, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, scored a whopping 43 goals and provided 15 assists for good measure, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 0.86 games.

In contrast, the Napoli ace scored 17 goals and provided four assists in 32 appearances, and while that is still impressive, it resulted in a worse average of a goal involvement every 1.52 games.

The second reason is similar to the first, but instead of looking at their raw output, we'll look at their underlying numbers, where the Sporting "powerhouse", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, once again comes out on top.

For example, while the Nigerian international takes more shots, the former Coventry City ace comes out ahead in every other relevant metric, and by quite some way in a few, including non-penalty expected goals plus assists, actual non-penalty goals plus assists, progressive passes and carries, shots on target, shot and goal-creating actions, successful take-ons and even aerial duels won, all per 90.

Finally, the last reason the Stockholm-born marksman would be the better signing is his availability. While he just underwent minor knee surgery, he has never missed a senior game through injury, whereas the former LOSC Lille star has missed a whopping 86 games across his career, and as they say, availability is the best ability.

Ultimately, while Osimhen might be the more recognisable name at the moment, Gyökeres has him comfortably beaten for output, underlying numbers, and availability, and while he does play in an easier league, that can't explain the extent to which he beats out the Napoli ace.

"It's a magnificent club, a huge club with ambitions that match mine, so I'm delighted to start and meet all the boys and get started," Solanke told Spurs TV (via BBC).

"What excites me most about the club is how ambitious it is. A great manager, great players and I feel like [Spurs] will definitely suit my style of play as well so I can't wait to get started and do my stuff on the pitch."

Tottenham have held talks with Evanilson via his agents this summer

Interestingly, as per HITC, another forward has been on Spurs' radar, one who scored 25 goals in all competitions last season.

Indeed, it is believed Tottenham have held talks with Evanilson via his agents this summer, with the Brazil international currently being chased by Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Arsenal, West Ham, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest.

It is the latter two who are currently ahead of every other Premier League team in the race for Evanilson, who is rumoured to cost around £60 million. While the fee is high, the 24-year-old has proved himself again and again in the Primeira Liga, with Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes calling Evanilson a player of "great quality".

It hasn't been ruled out that Spurs sign another attacker before deadline day, but it remains to be seen they'll spend a figure in and around that amount.
