Gabriel Veiga: Why European giants are queuing up to sign Celta Vigo's €40m-rated star

The 20-year-old has been one of the stars of the season in La Liga, and he is set to be hot property once the transfer window opens

La Liga's February Player of the Month award had an unexpected recipient. It didn't go to Antoine Greizmann, who was spearheading a turn around in fortunes Atletico Madrid. Nor did it go to Ronald Araujo, whose dominance at the back had buoyed a Barcelona European defence that has been the best in Europe this season. Real Madrid superstars Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema were both also snubbed.

Instead, it went to a 20-year-old attacking midfielder who had only broken into a mid-table Celta Vigo side in August. But that player, Gabriel Veiga, was a deserved winner.

The midfielder had led a surging Celta side, pulling the strings for a team pushing up the table, and taking on the mantle of leadership from club legend Iago Aspas. Veiga has now scored nine and assisted four in La Liga in 2022-23, establishing himself as one of the most exciting youngsters in Spanish football.

Now, the rest of Europe has taken notice. Veiga is wanted by a host of clubs, both in Spain and abroad, with many tipping him to be a top-quality attacking midfielder for years to come.

    Where it all began

Veiga was born in O Porrino, a stone's throw from Celta's stadium, Balaidos. He joined Celta's academy at 11 and worked his way through the ranks as a promising but not exactly heralded talent.

He was a distinctly unremarkable midfield product for most of his youth career, and like many in the Celta system, he idolised Aspas. But there was little suggestion that Veiga could reach the Spain international's heights.

The midfielder instead took his chances as they came, and began to impress for Celta's reserve side as a 17-year-old.

In 2020, he was handed his first-team debut, and made a smattering of appearances thereafter, including one start, for a Celta side that finished eighth in La Liga.

  • The big break

Heads first started to turn in the 2021-22 campaign as Veiga scored nine for a Celta B side that finished sixth in the Spanish third tier, and was entrusted with a further 10 appearances for the first team.

This season, though, things have skyrocketed. Veiga didn't figure to be a regular, but a series of departures in central midfield saw him forced into the picture.

He settled for a series of appearances off the bench in the opening month, but cracked the starting XI after a star showing against Real Betis last October. Veiga scored the winner, a 30-yard-screamer, to hand his side a 1-0 victory.

That showing — complete with a memorable goal — was enough to keep Veiga in new manager Carlos Carvahal's line up for good.

  • How it's going

Since then, Veiga has only improved. Previously tasked with being a more conservative box-to-box midfielder, the 20-year-old has been asked to get into advanced areas more regularly, playing as an active No.10 for a Celta side that likes to hit on the break.

And he's produced a handy return of both goals and assists since the positional shift. Veiga scored the equaliser against Sevilla on December 30, bagged a brace in a 4-3 win over Betis in early February, and scored two of Celta's three in a drubbing of Valladolid at the end of the month.

The midfielder has become a dangerous attacking threat with his pace and ball carrying ability. He has now created at least one chance in 12 of his last 13 appearances, and ranks in the 96th percentile of successful take-ons among midfielders, per .

    Biggest strengths

Despite being quite tall for a playmaker at 5'10 (178cm), Veiga is an excellent dribbler, and uses his power to work his way out of trouble in crowded spots before making driving runs into the final third. That he is able to receive the ball on the half turn and then hit full speed quickly makes him an incredibly difficult player to mark.

And there's little he can't do when he gets into the right areas. Veiga has scored some terrific goals from distance this year, and has the rare blend of confidence and technique to shoot from outside the box — especially while on the run.

But the 20-year-old also has a real finesse to his game, too — something he showed with a delightful dink over the keeper in Celta's recent win against Betis.

Veiga is, then, the perfect attacking midfielder for sides that like to play on the break.

Restored Hales ready to make up for lost time

Alex Hales knew the risk he was taking when he opted to sit out the start of the English season but he feel fit and raring to go against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge

It will be four years in August since Andrew Strauss walked off the field at Lord’s after the last of his 100 Test matches, by which time it is possible that the number of opening batsmen who have attempted to step into his shoes in the England side will be almost in double figures.Alex Hales is the current incumbent. He is the eighth to have been chosen as Alastair Cook’s partner post-Strauss, following on from Nick Compton, Joe Root, Michael Carberry, Sam Robson, Jonathan Trott, Adam Lyth and Moeen Ali. It is not a role that comes with much job security. Of those discards, five or six matches is the average time it took the selectors to make a decision.Hales, therefore, is probably at the halfway stage, and given that he came home from his debut series in South Africa with a batting average of precisely 17 from four matches he is hardly in a position of strength. Some critics, notably Geoff Boycott, have already written him off.In the circumstances, then, it might have been seen as a gamble on his part to miss the opening three weeks of the county season in favour of a rest, more so with hindsight. In his absence, Lyth and Moeen have made hundreds, Robson a hundred and a double in the same match. Likewise, James Vince and Mark Stoneman, so far untried but on the selectors’ radar, have also posted three-figure scores. Hales, though, is convinced it was the right thing to do.”When I was making the decision I had to take into account that other openers could and probably would score runs but I had to do what was right for me,” he said.”Going back to the 2014 one-day tour to Sri Lanka, I’d probably had three or four weeks off in two years. On a mental and physical level I was pretty knackered.”I had a good chat with the coaches and figured the best thing to do was come back with a full tank and ready to give 100 per cent. I felt if I didn’t give myself the best chance to score runs I wouldn’t be doing myself justice.Rivals’ head start

Sam Robson (Middlesex): 363 runs at 121

Adam Lyth (Yorkshire): 153 runs at 38.25

Daniel Bell-Drummond (Kent) 128 runs at 64.00

“So I’ve had some time back at home in Buckinghamshire seeing my dad and mum and I’ve had a holiday with my girlfriend in Scotland.”I was keeping an eye on the scores and I did notice who was getting runs but I feel the ball is in my court. I feel fresh and in good form in the nets and I have a couple of games now to score some runs.”With that in mind, Hales will line up for Nottinghamshire against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge, where Root will also make his first appearance of the summer, before going head-to-head with Robson and Compton against Middlesex at Lord’s next week, after which national selector James Whitaker and his colleagues will begin to ink in names for the first Test against Sri Lanka on 19 May.At the moment, the likelihood is that he will keep his place, although he admits he does not feel particularly secure and hopes the selectors look at his white-ball form in South Africa as a reason not to make hasty decisions. While his Test match returns were modest, his five one-day internationals against the Proteas, coming soon after his maiden ODI century against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in November, yielded scores of 57, 99, 65, 50 and 112.”I’ve had no indication of how long I might have (to prove myself in Test cricket) but if you look at the one-dayers – it took me nearly 20 games to nail that spot,” he said.”I had a poor ODI series against Australia at the end of last summer and if you average 23 after 20 games you can understand if they drop you.”Heading into the UAE I still had a point to prove in one-day cricket. So in terms of 50-over cricket it could not have really gone any better with the Pakistan series and SA was great on a personal level. They kept their faith in me and I repaid that faith.”So hopefully they will back me for the Sri Lanka Test series and I can show them that I belong at that level.”He feels, moreover, that there is some cause to be positive after the South Africa Tests, even if the numbers are not so impressive.”Obviously, the Tests did not go to plan in terms of runs but I learned a lot from the experience,” he said. “For a debut series it does not come much tougher than SA away.”But I didn’t feel out of my depth. If you look at my dismissals it was more often than not me getting myself out, which in a strange way I would probably rather be the case. I wasn’t thinking ‘this bowler’s got me on toast here, this bowler’s too good for me.’ It was me making mistakes, which I can do something about.”Alex Hales’ first Test innings ends at the hands of Dale Steyn•Getty Images

His weakness, he accepts, is in shot selection, which presents a tough challenge for a player with naturally aggressive instincts.”I’m going to have to improve in terms of managing my attacking instincts because I still want to be an attacking player and it is about knowing the time to do it,” he said.”There will be times when I need to rein myself in but I still want to hit the bad balls for four. It is about making better decisions outside off stump. I want to keep improving in all formats but the aim this summer is to try to nail down that that Test spot.”In that respect, Hales has undergone a change of mindset since his early days as an England player, entering the arena as a Twenty20 specialist at 22 years old and making 99 from 68 balls against West Indies in only his fifth appearance. At that stage, the lucrative possibilities offered by making himself a specialist in the short format were at the forefront of his thinking. But then came 2013, two years after he had topped 1,000 first-class runs for the first time, when he averaged a paltry 13.94 in the four-day format.”I was focussing on T20, wanting to be the best in the world in that format and for while it worked because I had the number one spot for a year or so in the T20 rankings”But after 2013 I went away to the Big Bash in Australia and I started to think ‘I’m not about that – I want to be good in all three formats.'”So that winter I made a real conscious effort to prioritise four-day cricket when I came back. And as it happens by doing that it improved my technique and improved my one-day game.”The challenge for me is to open in all formats. There is only David Warner who has been able to do that in international cricket and it is a tough challenge. The skill sets are pretty different opening in T20 compared with Tests, for example, but it is something I’m striving to master.”If Hales has learned to broaden his horizons, he also knows not to look too far ahead.”That comes from experience,” he said “When I was younger, in my first couple of years at Notts, I would be going into a game thinking ‘I’ve got to score runs’ and if you do that you end up over-thinking everything and going away from what you naturally do as a player. I’ve got better at staying in the present.”So I’m not going into these two games for Notts with any targets. Being successful comes down to doing everything right before the game – getting your practice right, your skills right.”I have practised intensively this week and I feel like my game is in good order. I’ve done all I can off the field and behind the scenes to go into the game with confidence.”The break has done me good and made me hungry to succeed in these two games. But you can’t think about the end results. If think about the process instead and how to get there, the rest should take care if itself.”

Big names revel in lesser roles for India success

The presence of like-for-like replacements is exactly what captain MS Dhoni desires but the inevitable upshot of such squad dynamics is that a few players are not going to play even a single game

Arun Venugopal in Kolkata09-Mar-20161:06

Harbhajan targeting hat-trick of World Cups

India finally find themselves in the possession of a luxury they have craved for some time now – a settled combination topped up by a bunch of all-rounders. The presence of like-for-like replacements in the squad is exactly what captain MS Dhoni desires as India head into the World T20. But the inevitable upshot of such squad dynamics is that a few players are not going to play even a single game in the tournament. In the Indian context it is hard to see how Ajinkya Rahane and Harbhajan Singh can force themselves into the first XI. For Rahane to get a look in, one of the openers – Shikhar Dhawan or Rohit Sharma – would either have to be injured or suffer a sudden form slump. The team’s batting order is so well grooved that it can’t accommodate him in the middle order.Want to be like Kallis – Pandya

India allrounder Hardik Pandya has said he wants to play a role similar to the one former allrounder Jacques Kallis played for South Africa. The 22-year-old allrounder, who made his international debut against Australia earlier this year, said he wants to emulate Kallis’ impact.
“Big things start with the dream only. This was the dream. Yes, it’s fulfilling. I want to be like Jacques Kallis. What he has done for Proteas in batting and bowling. I want to do the same thing for India,” Pandya said during a media session in Kolkata.
Pandya, who first came to the fore as an allrounder for Mumbai Indians, said the Indian Premier League had changed his life.
“IPL has changed my life big time,” he said. “Same time last year, I had posted a photo saying that I was sold to Mumbai Indians for Rs 10 lakh. This year on same day, I won the Asia Cup. Just imagine playing for the national team within a year and winning the Asia Cup. The journey has been quite amazing.”
Pandya said he was eager to repay the faith India captain MS Dhoni had shown in his batting abilities. One such instance was the second T20I in the home series against Sri Lanka last month, when Pandya was promoted to No. 5, ahead of Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, and smacked a 12-ball 27.
“When you see your captain promoting you ahead of big names, [it] is really a good thing. It helps a lot. I quite like the faith he is showing. I want to contribute as many times as I can. I don’t take pressure [on myself],” he said.

Harbhajan, similarly, would find it hard to dislodge the team’s frontline spin options, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. He would have reason to feel hard done by given that his recent performances have been impressive; he picked up nine wickets from five games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali domestic T20 tournament. While India have played 11 T20Is since January, Harbhajan got his solitary opportunity against UAE in the Asia Cup where he returned figures of 4-1-11-1.Rahane, on the other hand, has had luckier circumstances: he got to play the entire Sri Lanka series with Virat Kohli being rested and turned out against Pakistan in the Asia Cup after Shikhar Dhawan was out with a niggle. However, he hasn’t really pushed his case with a tally of 51 runs from four games. What has helped India’s cause though is neither Harbhajan nor Rahane has appeared to harbour any feelings of negativity or frustration. Instead, both the players have sought to derive happiness from contributing to the team in some form, be it mentoring, sharing ideas or running drinks. Rahane insisted there was no need for him to feel disappointed.”For me, even if I am not in the XI, it’s important to be of some help to the team. I think kisi ko paani pilaana bhi bahut badi cheez hoti hai [even carrying drinks for someone is a very important thing],” Rahane said at a media interaction in Kolkata on Tuesday. “If you do anything from your mind, whether you are in the XI or not, if you are offering drinks or helping someone by being the 12th man it’s of some value to the country.”Getting the team combination right is the best priority. I am quite happy that the ones who have got opportunity have done well. It only gets difficult [to deal with being dropped] when you don’t prepare but if I prepare well and practice with purpose I am sure I will do well when I get the opportunity. “Harbhajan said he gained satisfaction from sharing his knowledge, and that a receptive bunch of team-mates made the process even better.”It’s important to share your knowledge. If you don’t, you haven’t done much in your life,” he said. “If my seniors have helped me to become the player I have become then it’s important to share my knowledge on what to do in different situations, not just on the field but off the field.”Guys like me understood many things late; I would get angry a lot but with time we all learn. So I share my knowledge even when I am not playing. If someone is looking to do something as a bowler help him out with things he wants to achieve in the net sessions. Luckily this team has those sort of guys who are good listeners. They believe in sharing thoughts.”A naturally introverted person like Rahane has found his voice in team-meetings. He attributed that to the enhanced confidence level gained from constantly working on his game.”Whoever is playing now I try to learn from them about their shot-selection in different conditions,” he said. “In Bangladesh, the ball was moving around quite a bit initially, and I was noticing how our openers and also the batsmen in the opposition were playing. Specifically how Rohit took some time initially but after 10 overs began opening out. It’s about how quickly you analyse a situation and adjust mentally that’s most important.”My wife told me many times that I need to talk a little more. My nature is such that, even during the days I used to practice karate, I was very shy. Sometimes you end up not saying things that are right and which ought to be said that also you don’t end up speaking. I think it’s important to speak for yourself. We all speak in team meetings and it is very important to speak your mind and if what you say helps the team it is important. Like you said my confidence has also improved and because of that you express your mind better.”Harbhajan said two things, faith and satisfaction, played a huge part in him keeping pace with youngsters. He even has the word ‘faith’ tattooed on his hand to reinforce the message.”I have done one and only thing – I have worked really hard on my fitness which has kept me going,” he said. “If I have to compete with a 25-year-old then I have to have the same sort of fitness. You need to have the will along with the skill. If the will is big enough you can achieve anything.”Playing for India satisfies me the most and playing anywhere gives me pleasure. This is a very important part of my life. Till the time I can play I must play, whether it is 40 or 45 or 50. I don’t know anything else other than playing. [The tattoo refers to] faith in God, faith in your ability, faith in everything you do. There is a reason behind your working hard.”

'Thrived with every match I played' – Yasir

Yasir Shah, who has become the fastest Pakistan bowler to 50 Test wickets, has said his only aim is to do the best he can for his country

Umar Farooq in Colombo26-Jun-2015Before the Test series started, Zulfiqar Babar confidently predicted that Yasir Shah would take more wickets than him, and Yasir’s bowling numbers so far have emphatically proved him right. In just eight months, Yasir has made his journey from oblivion to become the fastest Pakistan bowler to take 50 Test wickets, surpassing Pakistan’s coach Waqar Younis.Yasir said he was happy to achieve the record which would further strengthen his confidence. “I still remember when Shane Warne tweeted me, that gave me ample confidence,” Yasir said after the second day in Colombo. “With his words I was under pressure, thinking how I will live up to his appreciation but with every match I played since then I have started to thrive.”I never thought that far [on being the fastest Pakistan bowler to 50 wickets] when I made my debut against Australia. The only aim was to just concentrate on doing good for the country. I knew in Test cricket I needed to be patient and I did exactly what needed to be done. Misbah has supported me all the way. For a legspinner, the field placement is very important and I am glad that the captain is giving me enough freedom to set the field.”After making his first-class debut in 2002, Yasir got his chance in Test chance last year, and has since left an indelible mark in the format. He took nine wickets in Galle, which included figures of 7 for 76 in the second innings – the best by an overseas bowler in Tests in Sri Lanka. After more than a decade on the domestic circuit, Yasir is not only acknowledged but also respected. On day two in the press box, Pakistan’s consistency in developing world-class bowlers was repeatedly commended.Yasir’s 13-year first-class career includes 336 wickets at an average of 25.05. He is one of many bowling prospects who had been pushed back with the burgeoning success of Saeed Ajmal in the last five years. He took his second five-for in the space of five days in the second Test in Colombo, after bowling 40 overs – the most by any bowler from both sides so far, primarily because Pakistan have lost Wahab Riaz for the rest of the series due to injury. After the first Test, Sri Lanka targetted Yasir as a tactic to neutralise him but it was to no effect as Yasir troubled the batsmen with his impressive variations and kept a check on the run rate, going at an economy rate of 2.37 in his 40 overs. Sri Lanka managed to hit him for 10 fours but kept on losing wickets at regular intervals.”The pitch is still playing well but expect more spin on the fourth and fifth day, it has definitely something to offer. Today the idea was to avoid bowling short and wait for the wickets to come and it worked. Unfortunately, Wahab Riaz got injured and we were forced to play with one bowler short. But the rest have given their 100%, though I had to bowl bit longer. But the plan remained the same to contain as much as we can.”

Draw looms despite Batty precision

If this match is to end in an unsatisfactory denouement, no one bothered to tell Gareth Batty, who claimed two wickets and kept Hampshire’s batsmen in check

Tim Wigmore at The Oval30-Jun-2014
ScorecardGareth Batty roars in approval at one of his two wickets late in the day•PA Photos

Graeme Smith was not impressed when these sides met at the Ageas Bowl in April. After Hampshire’s intransigence, as he saw it, in not setting Surrey a final day target, Smith declared himself “disappointed in Hampshire. I used to hear Warney talk about their positive play but they didn’t want to set up a game.”What would Warne do now? It would need all his ingenuity to muster a positive result from this match after the loss of almost a day’s play to sporadic rain.Gary Wilson, doing a sterling job filling in for Smith, will know that he has little to entice Hampshire with. The visitors to The Oval are top of Division Two and a draw – even one in which Surrey claim more bonus points – keeps them comfortably placed above the hosts, who must fear that they have located their best form only after giving Hampshire and Worcestershire too much of a head start.Still, if this match is to end in an unsatisfactory denouement, no one bothered to tell Gareth Batty. His recent claims that he has a case for being England’s Test spinner – “I look around; as an off-spinner and batting, I don’t see anybody who can do it the way I can,” he said last month – were easy to mock.Yet, on a slow pitch that is offering only negligible assistance to spin, Batty demonstrated that he has never been more in control of his craft. Harrying the batsmen with meticulous line and length and scarcely affording them the opportunity to breathe between deliveries, he is manifestly a man at ease with his game. For most of the day he was denied even a token reward, with Rory Burns shelling a hard chance at short leg off Will Smith. But a couple of lbws late on, as both Jimmy Adams and James Vince perished playing back, elicited roars of delight. The real testament to Batty’s quality, though, lay in the fact that his 24 overs yielded only 35 runs. Such parsimony has been typical of him this season – his Championship economy rate is just 2.16 an over. Add that to 25 wickets at under 20, and his words seem like more than bluster.Despite Batty’s skills, Hampshire only lost three wickets in their 70 overs, though his team-mates were not lacking in effort or skill. Matt Dunn bowled formidably, and beat the bat numerous times after snaring Michael Carberry; Zafar Ansari also suffered a dropped catch – Smith, again, this time at slip. Ultimately, though, this is not a pitch conducive to quick wickets. Wilson often took deliveries from the sprightly Dunn at ankle height.Adams and Smith, reprieved on 16 an 22, also played with admirable application. Adams, quick to dispose of anything short, was clinical in compiling 79. But, just as the promised sun did not materialise, neither did the promise of exhilarating batting from a Hampshire line-up well capable of it. Vince, the man most capable of providing it, was becalmed by Batty, escaping a close lbw appeal on 0 before falling for a 27-ball 7.After a slightly rag-tag bowling display on the second day, Hampshire were imbued with purpose from the first ball of the morning, as Kyle Abbott snared Jason Roy lbw. It had the effect of stalling Surrey somewhat – they made only 63 in the first 21 overs of the day, though they did claim maximum batting points. Warne would surely not have been impressed with the apparent inertia, but he would have welcomed the intent with which Batty and Tim Linley harrumphed the ball as Surrey neared a declaration. A couple more are required at The Oval tomorrow to prevent early handshakes.
