Harry Maguire interview: England defender opens up on defying the Man Utd critics to become an Old Trafford cult hero and irreplaceable member of Ruben Amorim's squad

The centre-back has seen it all for the Red Devils, becoming so valuable that the club told him this summer that he simply could not leave

"Maguire! Maguire! It's Maguire!" The excitement on the faces of the children is palpable as Harry Maguire casually strolls into their summer camp. The defender is a secret guest at the Manchester United Foundation’s multi-sport camp at Stretford Sport Village in the club’s heartlands, a 10-minute walk from Old Trafford.

He is serenaded with chants of "Oh Harry Maguire" before taking questions from the group of eight to 14-year-olds, many of whom come from low income backgrounds or live in areas of social deprivation. Maguire is quizzed on his toughest opponent (Harry Kane), his favourite game for United (his debut against Chelsea) and even if he prefers Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo (it’s Ronaldo). After fielding the questions, Maguire then joins in with the children for a match.

This is one of three camps taking place this summer in Manchester, as well as in Moss Side and Partington, offering children free meals and sporting activity as well as respite for their parents during the summer holidays. And best of all, they will be able to tell their friends and family about the time they played with a United hero, a former captain with 247 appearances and counting plus 15 goals, among them the barely-believable last-gasp winner against Lyon back in April.

"It's amazing to be here with the kids," Maguire tells GOAL. "When you turn up and you see them chanting your name and just putting a big smile on their face, the energy is infectious and I take some of this energy and take it back to the training ground."

Maguire and his team-mates could certainly do with that childlike enthusiasm as they look to get off the mark for the season at Fulham on Sunday after their equally encouraging, equally frustrating defeat to Arsenal in their opening match.

"I think obviously the feeling is disappointment in the end because this club demands winning football matches and when you play for this club you should never get the feeling of being happy after the game if you don't win," he says. "So the first feeling is disappointing because we’re sat in the table with zero points and we know it should be more. However, you can look at pluses. The performance was a lot better, [we had] a lot more intensity, and we actually deserved to get something from the game."

    New blood

The arrival of more than £200 million ($269m) worth of attacking talent in the form of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko made United a much more dangerous prospect against Arsenal, and it has lifted the mood among Ruben Amorim’s squad after a rotten season in which they had their lowest league finish, points total and goal count in 51 year, as well as the added pain of losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.

"Last year, we just weren't as big a threat going forward as we should have been for this club," Maguire says of his new team-mates. "This club demands players who create chances, score goals, and that's what it's done throughout its history. So I think Bryan and Matheus coming in, Sesko coming off the bench, these are players who have proven that they're going to score goals and create chances.

"First and foremost they're going to be a threat. I think when you play against them as an opposition defender, you're not going to have an easy afternoon and you're always going to be aware because you know that in one moment Matheus can score from anywhere, or he can produce that little bit of magic. Bryan can score in the back post or he can curl one in.

"And Benjamin's got great physical attributes. He's quick and strong and he's tall. He's very good in the air, attacking crosses, and his movement in the box is really good. So I think they're just gonna create and score goals, and that's what this club demands."

    Optimism after 'tough situation'

Maguire has been named in United’s six-man leadership group for this season, along with Tom Heaton, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui and captain Bruno Fernandes. As skipper himself between 2020 and 2023, Maguire’s leadership qualities are well known.

"It's just a group where we can feed things through to the staff and the management and look after the club in general, and give Bruno a little bit of weight off his shoulders," he explains. The atmosphere among the squad is far better, according to Maguire, than during last season, particularly when United’s league form rapidly declined as they lost 14 league matches between December and May.

"It was nice, if I'm being honest, to feel like it was a bit of a fresh start after last season. In February, March time, [there was] nothing to play for. It was really tough.. apart from the Europa League and obviously focusing on that. But then when you get beat in the Premier League, it still piles down on you.

"It was a tough situation for the manager to come into, and all his staff, because he was really preparing for the Europa League, and we never had a settled team in the Premier League. So I think this season, you're going to see us being a lot more competitive in the Premier League."

    Slaughtered on social media

Maguire was one of United’s best performers last season and was thus spared much of the criticism that was levelled at his team-mates. The defender has, however, been at the sharp end of insults and mockery, particularly during the 2021-22 season when he admits his performances declined during Ralf Rangnick’s short-lived and difficult spell as interim manager.

Things hit a nadir when he was jeered by Scotland fans during a friendly against England, prompting his mother to call the reaction towards Maguire "disgraceful and totally unacceptable". He therefore hopes his team-mates did not spend too long poring over the vitriolic reactions towards them on social media over the past few months.

"I'm sure that they've been getting slaughtered, left, right and centre, if I'm being honest. I hope they don't go on and read the comments when they've made a mistake or made a bad game, or read their direct messages or whatever they are on Instagram. I hope the players stay away and they learn that they don't need to be told by other people whether they're doing right or wrong.

"As a footballer, you know if you're playing well, and you know if you're doing things right and you know if you made a mistake. So you don't need to go on and get clarification from other people. We know where social media is. It's a tough place sometimes."

    In a good place

"I've been mentally strong throughout it all, but I’m only speaking on advice now I’m 32 years old," Maguire adds. "So I'm giving these younger lads experience that they are going to go through sticky times at this club, no matter how good it is. You're going to get it. It's one of the best clubs in the world, and you get a lot of spotlight on you, and you've got to learn to deal with it.”

Things have gone far better for Maguire since then, as he reclaimed his place in the team under Erik ten Hag having previously been stripped him of the captaincy because he was playing so little, before becoming a saviour for Amorim by scoring crucial goals against Ipswich Town, Leicester City and, of course, Lyon.

"I'm feeling in a good place, a really good place," he says. "It's been a couple of years now where I feel like I've played really well for this club again. I only had six months, really, where I had a bad dip of form. The previous two years were excellent. I've been a lot better in the last two-and-a-half years. I'm in a good place with the club and the fans. I've got a really good bond with them. It's a real special place to play, and it's a huge privilege and honour to play for this club, and it's something that I'll always be forever grateful for."

Borussia Dortmund fear nasty Yan Couto injury after 'brutal' tackle leaves ex-Man City full-back 'in a lot of pain'

The Borussia Dortmund players and head coach were left absolutely devastated after Yan Couto was stretchered off in a DFB-Pokal encounter.

Dortmund kicked off their 2025-26 campaign on a bittersweet note, as they registered a 1-0 win over Essen to progress to the next round of the DFB-Pokal, but lost a key player to injury. Late in the game, full-back Couto was stretchered off the field by paramedics following a horror challenge from Essen substitute Kelsey Owusu, leaving his team-mates and head coach Niko Kovac in despair.

Couto was once heralded as one of the most exciting right-backs in the world after his sensational loan spell at Girona in the 2023-24 season. However, he never got a chance to shine at Manchester City, with Dortmund snapping him up in the summer of 2024. The 23-year-old made 35 appearances in all competitions in the 2024-25 season, but he failed to be consistent and impactful. A lot of hopes were pinned on him ahead of this season, but his injury puts a spanner in the works for the Black and Yellow.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Following the full-time whistle. Julian Brandt reacted to Couto's injury on He said: "That's brutal. First of all, we're a bit lucky that he didn't stay completely on his leg, but that it was more of a glancing blow. I think otherwise, things are looking pretty bad for him. I haven't seen him yet. I hope he got off lightly. I hope that we won't lose Couto now as well, because we don't have a very large squad at the moment."

Kovac also spoke to and provide initial updates on the Brazilian international's injury.

"He's in a lot of pain," the manager explained. "That was a pretty hard kick. I've never seen anything like it before. He's doubled over in pain. He's got an ice pack on there, of course. Tomorrow we'll examine what happened. I hope nothing's broken. But it's certainly clear to everyone that it's definitely a bad bruise.

"Rough kick is almost an understatement… I think that's not something you do between colleagues. I'm sure he didn't do it intentionally. But he has no chance at all; the ball is somewhere [else], and it goes straight to his knee. That's already beyond the pale."

Dortmund already boast of a squad that lacks enough depth to challenge for titles. Couto's injury further piles on to their misery, as he joins fellow defenders Emre Can, Niklas Sule and Nico Schlotterbeck on the sidelines for the foreseeable future. Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl hinted that the club could be forced to sign a replacement in case Couto is sidelined for a lengthy period.

“If Yan were to be sidelined now, the situation would certainly have changed. We’ll see what really makes sense in terms of transfers,” Kehl said.

'He's nowhere near' – Gary Neville delivers brutal Benjamin Sesko verdict as Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim faces selection 'problem'

The Red Devils invested £74 million ($100m) in Sesko when a protracted search for a new No.9 led to them completing a big-money deal with RB Leipzig. The Slovenia international has been eased into Premier League life off the bench.

His competitive debut came in a 2025-26 opening weekend defeat to Arsenal, before being given 37 minutes in a 1-1 draw away at Fulham. Sesko struggled to make an impression in either outing, with questions being asked of how match ready the 22-year-old frontman is.

WHAT NEVILLE SAID

United legend Neville told after watching another frustrating performance from Ruben Amorim’s side at Craven Cottage: “I said this last week and it's a little bit worrying: Fulham got a lot stronger when they made their substitutions, I actually thought United got worse when they made theirs. Sesko, at the moment, let's just say it, he's nowhere near in terms of fitness or just getting up to speed.”

AFPDID YOU KNOW?

Neville added on efforts to get minutes into Sesko, which are making selection calls tricky for United’s Portuguese coach: “Ruben Amorim said before the game that there is a clamour to play him. Last week, I was saying, 'look, let's just get him straight in'.

“He is going to have to get him in against Grimsby and give him 90 minutes. He's going to have to probably play him against Burnley next Saturday, just to get him going, because you can see he needs football.

“What you can't do is let a player of that value, that potential, just keep being on the bench. The problem he'll have is that he wants to keep [building] the team, but I think what you saw when they brought Sesko on, put Mount into midfield and took Casemiro off, they did get opened up and it looked like Fulham could score.”

Dani Ceballos offered Champions League return by several clubs as midfielder's stance on Real Madrid future revealed

Dani Ceballos' preference when it comes to his future has been made clear, with reports from Spain pointing towards interest from Champions League clubs.

According to a report from , Ceballos has received offers from several unnamed clubs set to participate in this season's Champions League. However, the former Arsenal midfielder is not inclined towards leaving Real Madrid this summer.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ceballos begins the season on the fringes of Madrid’s midfield. He is, however, determined to stay in the Spanish capital and battle for a place under new head coach Xabi Alonso, much like he did with previous boss Carlo Ancelotti before an injury halted his momentum in February 2025. Despite interest from several big clubs, Ceballos is currently focused on staying and proving his worth. However, the potential arrival of a new midfielder — with links to Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton in recent days — could force him to reconsider. Madrid would allow his departure for an offer between €15–20 million (£13-17m/$17-23m). With Fede Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham, and Arda Guler ahead in the pecking order, Ceballos sits sixth in line. A return to former club Real Betis remains a long-standing dream, though financial constraints make it unlikely at present.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Last month, it was reported that Alonso had blocked the exits of both Ceballos and Camavinga, as he believed that the former could potentially fill the void left by the absence of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. Ceballos came on as a late substitute in Madrid's opener against Osasuna on Tuesday, but could yet play an important role as the season progresses. Of course, that hinges entirely on whether he remains at the Santiago Bernabeu beyond the transfer window deadline.

    WHAT NEXT FOR DANI CEBALLOS?

It looks unlikely that Ceballos will join a new team. Rarely do Los Blancos ever force out a player who wishes to remain with the team. The 29-year-old has shown over the past few years that, if he can remain fit, he can challenge for a spot in the playing XI. It remains to be seen how Alonso plans on using him. Meanwhile, Betis continue to track their ex-player, especially as they seek a replacement for the injured Isco.

Wrexham are up and running! Phil Parkinson's side FINALLY win first Championship game as Kieffer Moore and Lewis O'Brien strike against Millwall amid Danny Ward injury concern

Wrexham headed into the game with the intention of picking up their maiden win in the Championship 2025-26 season, as they had managed to register just one point from their first three matches in the English second-tier, and did just that. Phil Parkinson made three changes in the lineup from their previous league match against Sheffield Wednesday, as Callum Doyle, Liberato Cacace and Ryan Hardie came into the playing XI.

Millwall dominated proceedings in the first half at their home and created multiple opportunities inside the Wrexham box within the first 15 minutes of the match. However, they failed to break the deadlock. The hosts dominated ball possession and looked more compact on the pitch compared to their opponents in the first 45 minutes but the two teams could not be separated at the break.

Just a couple of minutes before the hour mark, the Red Dragons opened the scoring as new signing Kieffer Moore found the back of the net from a header. Max Cleworth chipped the ball brilliantly over the Millwall defence from outside the box and Moore converted the header with a first-time attempt. Millwall custodian Steven Benda came out of his line but he completely missed the flight. Moore sustained a nose injury while going for the goal as he clashed with Benda.

As the game progressed, Millwall continued to increase their intensity in the attack in search of an equaliser, while the Welsh club defended resiliently in a bid to protect their slender lead. The hosts came close to equalising in the 75th minute from a well-orchestrated move. Luke Cundle initiated it with a quality through ball for Mihailo Ivanovic, who went for the goal from a difficult angle. Ryan Leonard received the resulting ball inside the box and almost immediately sent a cross in front of the goal, which a Wrexham defender failed to intercept. Aidomo Emakhu attempts a side volley from a close range but misses the target by a whisker. This was by far Millwall's best goalscoring chance of the match.

Red Dragons custodian Danny Ward picked up an injury late in the game as he received medical treatment for more than 10 minutes during injury time. Arthur Okonkwo came in and replaced the injured Ward for the final minutes of the match. In the 19th minute of ]injury time, Lewis O'Brien doubled the team's and sealed victory as he scored with a clinical finish from James McClean's assist.

Moore's brilliant goalscoring run continued as he scored his fourth Wrexham goal in his third consecutive game across all competitions. He rose to the occasion when his side needed him the most and secured the Welsh side's first Championship win of the season.

Getty Images SportTHE BIG LOSER

Millwall custodian Benda conceded an unwanted goal just before the hour mark as he completely misjudged the flight of Cleworth's chipped cross from which Moore scored the winning goal. He cluelessly came off of his line, which also gave Moore a clear angle to score.

The Austrian coach refused to sanction the centre-back’s sale to the Reds, even though the deal would have added £35 million into Crystal Palace’s account. Had Liverpool firmed up their pursuit earlier in the window, the story could have been very different. By March, Glasner had already reached an understanding with chairman Steve Parish that Guehi would be allowed to move if a suitable replacement was signed. The England defender, while not forcing the issue, was receptive to the idea of joining the reigning champions.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

But no new senior centre-back was recruited. As the window ticked away, Glasner made his stance clear both publicly and privately: it was far too late to start a scramble for reinforcements. Yet, when Palace sanctioned the transfer, Glasner reportedly threatened that he would resign if the defender was allowed to leave. This forced Parish to pull the plug on the move and Guehi will now spend the next few months, at least until Janaury, in London.

  • WHAT GLASNER SAID

After winning the transfer battle against Liverpool, Glasner outlined his vision for the club in an interview with in his native Austria.

"I always find something that can be improved," he said of his motivations. "If I felt I couldn’t make any more of an impact, I would have to quit. There are always things to adjust, new players to integrate, and new ideas to introduce. That’s what makes the job of a coach so exciting – it’s a never-ending process."
