Mohsin Khan to miss majority of IPL 2023 with shoulder injury

Uncapped Indian fast bowler Mohsin Khan will be a key absentee in the Lucknow Super Giants’ line-up for majority of the 2023 season as he recovers from a left shoulder injury. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Mohsin, who was among the best bowlers last IPL, underwent surgery to remove blood clots in his bowling shoulder last year and is yet to resume bowling.Mohsin is understood to have experienced discomfort late into the 2022 season and has not bowled since last IPL. He travelled to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and subsequently had the blood clots removed surgically. The left-arm fast bowler from Uttar Pradesh is currently part of the Super Giants’ preparatory camp in Lucknow. It is understood that while Mohsin has been batting in the nets, he is not ready to start bowling again because he is still strengthening his bowling shoulder.Super Giants, who finished third in their maiden IPL season last year, remain optimistic and expect Mohsin to start bowling in the second half of the IPL. While the franchise picked Saurashtra and India left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat as a ready replacement at the IPL auction last December, they kept Mohsin in the squad and is understood to have supported him throughout the rehab phase.Super Giants had entrusted Mohsin with the most challenging task: bowling in the powerplay and death. He had a shaky start to IPL 2022, leaking 18 runs in two wicketless overs against Gujarat Titans in Super Giants’ first IPL game and was subsequently benched for the rest of the first half of the season. But once he returned, he made an impact in virtually each of the eight matches he played, including Eliminator against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens, where his 1 for 25 in four overs was the joint-most economical spell in the game.In terms of impact per match measured by ESPNcricnfo’s Smart Stats, Mohsin even pipped Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler, last season’s leading run-getter, with a score of 58.4. Smart Stats takes into account match context for each ball bowled and it was here that Mohsin made the telling impact. His 4 for 16 against Delhi Capitals and 3 for 20 against Kolkata Knight Riders featured in the list of top-five highest impact points for a bowling performance last IPL.In his last eight matches, Mohsin conceded 12.78 runs per wicket and 5.77 per over. Among the 33 bowlers who bowled at least 20 overs in that period, none had a better average or economy rate. Overall in the 2022 season, no bowler had a better economy in the powerplay than his 5.25 while only four other bowlers did better than his 8.62 at the death (minimum qualification: eight overs for each).

Wes Agar runs through Northants as Kent boss opening day

Fast scoring stand between Muyeye and Bell-Drummond puts Kent in commanding position after Agar’s 5 for 63

Kent’s Australian international Wes Agar claimed the second five-wicket haul of his first-class career to restrict Northamptonshire to a modest 237. It came despite Rob Keogh leading a spirited fightback for the hosts with a fine 97 on day one of this LV= Insurance County Championship match.Tawanda Muyeye and Daniel Bell-Drummond took the positive route in response, sharing a confident, attacking unbeaten partnership of 93 as Kent closed on 110 for 1 in 26 overs. The pair peppered the boundary, Muyeye smashing eight fours and a six off his 82 deliveries so far.Keogh fell agonisingly short of a second consecutive century against Kent this season but did well to help his side recover after losing three early wickets to catches in the slip cordon. It created a sense of déjà vu for Northamptonshire fans after similar batting collapses this season, but Keogh’s half-century partnerships with Sam Whiteman and Saif Zaib started to swing the momentum back their way.Agar, though, was finding prodigious swing, having already removed Whiteman and Ricardo Vasconcelos, and he finally ended Keogh’s resistance after 147 balls, and 13 fours, the first of three wickets in 11 balls for the Australian, including a double-wicket maiden. Tom Taylor clubbed six boundaries before he became a third victim for Hamidullah Qadri.Northamptonshire won the toss and elected to bat first on a used pitch in temperatures of 30 degrees. Agar was soon in the wickets column when he removed Vasconcelos without scoring in the fourth over. Left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh picked up Emilio Gay nine balls later before accounting for skipper Luke Procter.Keogh took an unbeaten 116 off Kent in the opening game of the season and tucked into their bowling once more. He punched Matt Quinn square for four and greeted Qadri’s arrival with a similar shot before punching him through the covers when the spinner dropped short. He also cut powerfully to the ropes as Northamptonshire reached three figures before lunch. In the meantime, Whiteman drove Agar authoritatively down the ground for four and was particularly strong off his legs, steering Quinn behind square to the ropes. But with the safety of lunch just four balls away, he lost concentration and flashed at one outside of-stump from Agar with Leaning taking an excellent tumbling catch, his third of the morning. After lunch Keogh found a new partner in Zaib and they put on 65 in 15 overs. Keogh continued to profit from the cut and backfoot punch, advancing to his half-century off 72 balls. When Arshdeep tested him with a well-directed bouncer he was happy to take that on too, hooking it comfortably for four.Zaib became Qadri’s first wicket when he backed away and was bowled, attempting a cut. The spinner struck again in his next over when Lewis McManus played down the wrong line and popped a catch to short leg.Keogh grew increasingly nervous through the nineties. He survived an lbw shout from Agar and offered an edge which dropped short of the slips. But although he reverse swept Qadri for four to move to 97, Agar got his man next over when he was trapped lbw. Agar’s next over saw him bowl both Ben Sanderson and Jack White without scoring.Taylor traded some lusty blows, pulling Quinn for four and carving Agar to the ropes, before punching two boundaries off Qadri. His bid to gain Northamptonshire a rare batting bonus though ended when he was caught off Qadri. When Kent batted, Sanderson struck early to beat Ben Compton’s defences and hit the stumps. Muyeye looked assured, powerfully cutting a short ball from Sanderson for four and playing an exquisite cover drive off Taylor to the ropes. His timing was exemplary, but he did play a rare false shot when he top-edged an attempted hook, the ball falling just in front of the fielder. He soon found the boundary again, punishing consecutive short balls from Taylor, swotting them disdainfully away to the ropes and smashing Keogh high over deep midwicket for six to bring up his half-century off 69 balls.Bell-Drummond was timing the ball well too, punching White down the ground and carving him square before playing the same bowler through midwicket for four to bring up the fifty partnership with Muyeye off 93 balls.

Healy's 99 and Brown's five wickets headline Australia's dominance

Australia 251 for 5 (Healy 99, Mooney 78, Sutherland 54*, Klass 3-39) lead South Africa 76 (Brown 5-21, Sutherland 3-19) by 175 runsAustralia’s quicks defied searing heat at the WACA to tear through an inexperienced South Africa badly missing Marizanne Kapp before captain Alyssa Healy fell agonisingly short of a maiden Test century late on day one.A tiring Healy, who had been on the field for almost the entire day, was dismissed for 99 when she succumbed to the offspin of debutant Delmi Tucker and was caught and bowled. But Australia are well on top in the historic first Test between the countries and lead by 175 runs at stumps.South Africa were routed for just 76 in their lowest ever Test score after being bowled out in 31.2 overs. But they hit back when quick Masabata Klaas produced a spectacular new-ball spell to leave Australia reeling at 12 for 3 in reply.South Africa’s attack were unable to keep up the pressure in 42-degree heat as Healy combined with Beth Mooney in a 155-run partnership to regain Australia’s ascendency.Healy combined with Annabel Sutherland, who took advantage of a wilting South Africa with an unbeaten half-century as the shadows creeped onto the ground.South Africa’s bid for an upset victory to square the multi-format series appears forlorn after a disastrous start to the four-day match.Playing only their second Test match in a decade, fielding four debutants, South Africa were rocked when Kapp was ruled out due to illness.A rattled South Africa were unable to cope with the discipline of Australia’s quicks, who targeted a dangerous back of a length to devastating effect. South Africa’s inexperience against the red-ball, with their XI combining for just seven Tests, was apparent as they fell tamely to loose strokes. Their batters were undone by minimal foot work and too often slashed at deliveries outside the off-stump.Alyssa Healy scored freely all around the wicket•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

Vindicating Healy’s bold decision to bowl first amid fierce heat, speedster Darcie Brown claimed her first Test five-wicket haul while Sutherland and Tahlia McGrath also starred on a green-tinged surface offering movement and bounce. The dominance of the quicks meant that Healy did not have to call upon Australia’s trio of frontline spinners, including Sophie Molineux playing in her first international match in more than two years. There had been intrigue over the surface, used for the first time this season, but fittingly, in the first men’s or women’s Test match played at the WACA since December 2017, pace-bowling dominated.Having won back her spot after missing Australia’s last Test in India, Brown steamed in and created a chance almost immediately when opener Anneke Bosch was dropped at third slip by Mooney. But she was worked over by a fiery Brown as a Kapp-less South Africa desperately needed captain Laura Wolvaardt to overcome her sluggish form on the tour. She was unable to capitalise on a drop from a diving Healy to fall on the next delivery to Brown, who finished a spectacular opening spell with 2 for 5 from five overs.South Africa appeared to be rallying when Sune Luus and Tazmin Brits dug in to defy Australia for 12 overs. Brits, however, was unable to turn over the strike and crawled to 5 off 48 balls before succumbing lbw to Sutherland in a decision that was overturned on DRS. Tucker had a horror debut when she chopped onto her stumps first ball as South Africa spiralled.Darcie Brown tore through South Africa•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

Luus had been the only batter seemingly not overawed by the situation and made a fluent 26, but was lured into a drive by Sutherland to provide more catching practice for the slips.South Africa offered little resistance and were in jeopardy of being humiliatingly bowled out within a session. They trudged to lunch at 55 for 8, but were unable to get past their previous lowest Test score of 89 against New Zealand in Durban in 1972.Klaas mounted a fightback with the ball and continued her stranglehold of Litchfield, who edged to third slip after being lured into driving a wide ball. Klass was on a roll and dismissed Ellyse Perry and McGrath cheaply as South Africa stormed back into the contestBut the experience of Mooney and Healy came to the fore as they lifted Australia out of trouble before putting the foot down. Healy was in a typically aggressive mood to race to a 59-ball half-century with a crunching blow through midwicket to race as Mooney shortly after also raised the bat.South Africa toiled in the baking sun and were seemingly going through the motions until Nadine de Klerk produced a wicket out of nowhere when she had Mooney caught at a wide slip.Healy looked understandably gassed and she succumbed minutes before stumps, but her team remain firmly in control.

Also in the mix are opener Lahiru Udara, and batting allrounder Kamindu Mendis.Omitted, meanwhile, is Pathum Nissanka, who was part of Sri Lanka’s last Test squad, though he has not played a Test since the middle of 2022. Dilshan Madushanka, who is currently in the UAE playing in the ILT20, is not in this squad either. Elsewhere, there are no major surprises. Dimuth Karunaratne and Nishan Madushka are likely to open the batting, as they did against Pakistan last year, with Kusal Mendis likely at No. 3, and Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, and de Silva coming in lower down. Sadeera Samarawickrama may take the gloves again. On the bowling front, Sri Lanka are likely to go with Ramesh Mendis and Prabath Jayasuriya as their primary spin options, with the likes of Vishwa Fernando, Kasun Rajitha and Asitha Fernando to choose from on the seam-bowling front. Left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama, who had taken 11 wickets on debut in 2021 but has had less impressive outings since then, has not been named in the squad.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Gunasekara has been selected partly on the back of good form in the ongoing National Super League (NSL) four-day competition. In two matches over the last two weeks, Gunasekara has taken eight wickets at an average of 16.5. Rathnayake, meanwhile, has been chosen based on a larger body of work – he has in the past been impressive in the Sri Lanka A side. This is the second Test squad Rathnayake has been selected in, though he is yet to represent Sri Lanka.Udara, who has also not played a Test, gets into the squad having also impressed at the NSL recently. He had hit 100 and 72 against a Galle attack featuring Ramesh Mendis and Rathnayake, in the last fortnight.Afghanistan are without Rashid Khan for this Test. This is the first time these teams will play a Test against each other.

He will need at least three weeks to recover, confirms Bangladesh physio Bayjedul Islam Khan

A fractured thumb has forced Mushfiqur Rahim to pull out of Bangladesh’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka that gets underway on Friday in Sylhet. Bangladesh physio Bayjedul Islam Khan has confirmed that Mushfiqur will require at least three weeks to recover from the fracture. His replacement is Towhid Hridoy, who has played 38 white-ball internationals but is yet to play Test cricket. This is Hridoy’s maiden call up into the Test set-up and averages 48.05 in first-class cricket. The 36-year-old Mushfiqur suffered the injury during the second over of the third ODI against Sri Lanka on Monday. He was struck by a Taskin Ahmed delivery on his right thumb and immediately clutched his hand in pain. The team physio worked on him for a bit before Mushfiqur resumed his wicketkeeping duties and later played a match-winning unbeaten 37 in the 236-run chase for Bangladesh.”After the match, Mushfiqur underwent an X-ray examination in Dhaka, which revealed an avulsion fracture on the MIP joint of his right thumb. He is currently undergoing conservative management for his injury and is expected to be sidelined for around three to four weeks, consequently ruling him out of participation in the Test series against Sri Lanka,” Bayjedul said.Related

Mushfiqur: Criteria should be fitness and performance, not age

Mushfiqur’s exit is a severe blow to the Bangladesh batting line-up. He has played 88 Tests – the most for any Bangladesh player – and has scored 5676 runs at an average of 38.09. Mushfiqur was also in excellent form in the ODI series finishing as Bangladesh’s second-highest run-scorer behind Najmul Hossain Shanto. The Bangladesh selectors are yet to announce Mushfiqur’s replacement but they don’t exactly have a lot of choices with proper red-ball experience. The ones who could be considered are Soumya Sarkar, Towhid Hridoy or Tanzid Hasan, while Jaker Ali and Anamul Haque are also fresh from the ODI side. Another choice could be 37-year-old Naeem Islam, who played the last of his eight Tests in 2012. Naeem has been in good red-ball form recently finishing the BCL 2023-24 as the leading run-scorer and the NCL 2023-24 as the joint second-highest run-getter.Bangladesh will play the first of the two Tests against Sri Lanka in Sylhet before travelling to Chattogram for the second Test that gets underway on March 30. Sri Lanka won the T20I series 2-1 before Bangladesh bounced back to take the ODI leg by the same margin.

Gannon leads Western Australia's late surge to take control of Shield final

Tasmania could barely get their scoring rate above two an over then lost late wickets

Western Australia grabbed control of the Sheffield Shield final against Tasmania after a sustained attack on day two resulted in the late wickets of Jordan Silk and Beau Webster.Tasmania reached stumps at 152 for 6 having struggled to cope with an onslaught from WA’s outstanding attack led by Cameron Gannon, who used his towering frame to devastating effect.Related

Spinner Corey Rocchiccioli, who is battling a flu, produced a lionhearted performance to continue his outstanding season as he continued his penchant for bowling on the WACA. He claimed the only two wickets of an attritional second session to finish with 2 for 44 from 22 overs.”I think those last couple of wickets might have helped us get ahead of the game. We just need to continue to go out there and get these four wickets,” said debutant Cooper Connolly who scored 90 in WA’s first innings. There’s almost no chance of Tasmania overtaking WA on bonus points, so they will have to win the game to end an 11-year title drought. They suffered a double late blow by Gannon when Silk was superly caught by wicketkeeper Josh Inglis before Aaron Hardie claimed an athletic catch to dismiss Webster.”Obviously not in a great position, but we’re still within touching distance,” Tasmania opener Caleb Jewell said.Aaron Hardie got one through Jake Doran late in the day•Getty ImagesWA’s first innings received a lift with Connolly falling short of being the second youngest Shield final centurion behind Phillip Hughes.WA resumed at 325 for 8, with anticipation high as a number of patrons rocked up early in the hope of seeing something extraordinary from a 20-year-old some observers have compared to Shaun Marsh.Connolly started on 73 after his fireworks late on day one, but didn’t go for broke even after the early wicket of Gannon. He received strong support from No.11 Rocchiccioli, who shed his attacking instincts and defended solidly. Every ball he survived received applause from the fans, who cheered with gusto at each run from Connolly. With the field spread far and wide, Connolly was tasked with playing a game of cat and mouse, but on 86 he unfurled a big stroke that was mistimed and hung in the air only to be dropped at deep backward point by Bradley Hope. It was reminiscent of the epic BBL final when he survived a similar drop from Josh Brown, but Connolly could not cash in as he succumbed shortly later.Connolly’s innings ended tamely on his 115th ball when he was caught in two minds and edged the hardworking Iain Carlisle to slip. Connolly scurried off to a standing ovation from the WACA faithful as Tasmania were soon faced with a thorough examination from WA’s miserly quicks. In his last first-class match, Matthew Wade was trapped lbw just before lunch by a superb inswinger from Gannon and he seemingly accepted his fate as he trudged off the ground not appearing disappointed at the decision. It didn’t take long for Corey Rocchiccioli to have an impact•Getty ImagesGannon and Joel Paris exploited the conditions superbly with Tasmania crawling at barely a run an over. Having survived close calls, Jewell and Charlie Wakim fought hard and combined for a 68-run partnership but eventually WA’s pressure proved too much. After Jarrod Freeman spun the ball sharply on day one, Rocchiccioli loomed as the dangerman and he immediately caused problems. Wakim countered by using his feet and clubbing a six over the long-on boundary, which required Hilton Cartwright to scale the white pickets and find the ball amid the vacant seating. But it was a risky strategy and proved his undoing when he holed out to Cartwright then Rocchiccioli, just before tea, dismissed Jewell caught behind with a sharp delivery that bounced and hit the edge.WA eyed further inroads in the final session where wickets often fall in clumps late in the day at the WACA. On restricted bowling duties, Hardie bowled menacingly from the get go and was rewarded by dismissing Jake Doran with a cracking delivery. But WA were left frustrated with numerous loud appeals turned down with Silk on 28 appearing to edge a rising Gannon delivery outside the off stump. The rowdy fans in the terraces – with a strong crowd of 1852 in attendance – were starting to get agitated until Silk and Webster fell as the shadows crept onto the ground as WA nestled into a strong position.

Innings defeat looming as hosts limp to close five-down on chastening day

Surrey are closing in on an emphatic victory against Kent in the Vitality County Championship at Canterbury, after reducing the hosts to 120 for five in their second innings, a deficit of 179.Worrall took three for 18 as the champions rattled through Kent’s top order after declaring on 543 for seven.Matt Parkinson took five wickets for Kent, but they came at a cost of 177 runs, as Surrey hit out during a punishing afternoon session for the home side, to take a first-innings lead of 299, Dom Sibley making 150, Dan Lawrence 112 and Jamie Smith a quickfire 58.Ben Compton and Joey Evison were not out on eight and seven respectively at stumps, but with the forecast for clear skies tomorrow Kent will need something close to a miracle to escape with a draw on day four. For a third successive day this game was played out in a bone-chilling northerly wind and it went as almost everyone in the ground knew it would, with the champions making unmolested progress through the first hour. The landmarks ticked by. Sibley glanced Jas Singh for four through square leg to reach three figures and Lawrence tickled the same bowler for a single to reach his 50.Sibley then flicked Evison for four to put Surrey into the lead and Lawrence drove Jack Leaning through the covers to bring up his century.Kent opted not to take the new ball after 80 overs and Matt Parkinson vindicated the decision when he bowled Lawrence with the very next delivery. The afternoon session was significantly livelier. Sibley had just reached his 150 when he was given out caught and bowled by Parkinson after the umpires checked the ball had carried.Ben Foakes then made a rapid 24 from 20 balls but he was caught behind slashing at George Garrett.Smith was on 37 when he hooked Jas Singh to square leg, but the sub fielder Fred Klaassen couldn’t haul in the catch.Smith responded with a six off Parkinson that flew on to the upper balcony of the Cowdrey stand and he reached 50 when he swept the next delivery for a single, but he fell in Parkinson’s next over, the 99th, caught at long on by Arafat Bhuiyan.Parkinson got his fourth wicket when Ryan Patel drove him to Garrett at midwicket for 30 and despite the grim match situation he till let out a scream of delight when Jordan Clark hit him to Joe Denly at the midwicket boundary, giving him his first five-wicket haul for Kent.Surrey finally declared at tea and with Compton off the field due to a sore neck, Harry Finch opened the batting alongside Zak Crawley. The England opener contributed just four before he edged Worrall behind to become Foakes’ 300th first class victim for Surrey.Worrall then sent Daniel Bell-Drummond’s middle-stump flying for 10 and Finch went for an entertaining but brief 24 when he was lbw to Jordan Clark.Joe Denly made 38 but then prodded Cameron Steel to Smith at mid-wicket, before Worrall had Jack Leaning caught at slip by Sibley for 24.There were ironic cheers when Compton got off the mark after 30 balls, but if anyone can thwart Surrey on the final day it’s a man who values his wicket this dearly.
