The Chicago Cubs parted ways with Cody Bellinger in the offseason, trading him to the New York Yankees in exchange for right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet.

Ahead of Opening Day, that trade suddenly looks a lot worse for Chicago after the team announced that it had designated Poteet for assignment, leaving him off the 26-man roster to start the campaign.

Of course, part of the reason the Bellinger deal was made was to get his $26 million salary off the books, though the Cubs did also send New York $5 million in the trade. Still, to move on from Poteet before the team played a single game in the '25 season is less than ideal.

Poteet, 30, has only three MLB seasons under his belt. He spent 2024 with the Yankees, where he made four starts and five total appearances. The righty recorded a 2.22 ERA with 16 strikeouts across 24 1/3 innings. This spring for the Cubs, he struggled in his lone appearance on the mound, surrendering four runs, five hits and three walks across 3 1/3 innings.

Despite a disastrous start to the season under Will Still, Southampton now found themselves only four points off the final playoff position in the early Championship table.

Three wins on the trot – since Still was dismissed – have helped to arrest the worrying slide, as the Saints aim to be in and around the promotion spaces now until the close of the dramatic 46-game campaign, to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

While the Still reign failed spectacularly, his immediate successor in Tonda Eckert looks to be a short-term figure who is now destined for long-term success at St. Mary’s, with the full-time reins perhaps handed to the transformative 32-year-old very shortly.

The latest on Southampton's manager situation

The German, who is used to managing the U21s on the South Coast, really can’t do much more right now to put himself out in front for the running to be the main Saints manager.

As has been mentioned, Eckert has led the once sorry outfit to three straight wins in league action, with a 5-1 win over ex-Southampton boss Nathan Jones last time out versus Charlton Athletic very much the pick of the bunch.

The powers that be at St Mary’s have clearly taken notice now of how much of an impressive turnaround Eckert has managed to mastermind, with Fabrizio Romano reporting – via GIVEMESPORT – that the stand-in manager has a good chance of being handed the reins permanently, amid internal talks behind the scenes at the club.

There had been other rumours suggesting Russell Martin could come back for another shot at promotion glory with the Saints, but instead of walking down memory lane, Southampton could be better off appointing Eckert right now, as he might well be Martin 2.0 for the rejuvenated Saints.

Why Eckert could be Southampton's next Martin

Martin is likely in desperate need of some time away from the pressures of the dug-out after experiencing his own Still-like failures at the helm of Rangers.

On the other hand, Eckert looks hungry and ready for a chance as Southampton’s main boss, having got a taste for it now, after largely settling for roles as an assistant manager and U21 manager during his coaching career to date.

When looking at Martin’s early career as a manager, he never looked back after being handed the MK Dons gig in 2019 at just 33 years of age, which is coincidentally only a year older than Eckert currently is, who boasts some impressive numbers on the South Coast as a U21 boss and as an interim stand-in after Still.

Martin gradually rose the EFL ladder to then take on the Southampton main post and clinch promotion, with 26 wins and 87 goals accumulated over 46 games in the second tier, making the now out-of-work manager a firm fan favourite at St. Mary’s.

Off the back of such a richly successful season, Martin was rightly hailed as a figure who prioritises “exciting attacking football” by analyst John Walker.

Safe to say, the excitement levels have returned to Southampton since Eckert has been given the temporary reins, with the barnstorming 5-1 success over the Addicks also calling back to when Martin was in the hot seat, with Adam Armstrong bagging two, and possession standing in the Saints’ favour at the full-time whistle at 59%.

Moreover, Eckert is willing to give the next generation of talents at Southampton chances to shine, having worked in the U21 ranks, much like Martin showed with the likes of Tyler Dibling before his big Everton switch.

It would be a big risk, but the numbers since Eckert took over from Still are very encouraging, with the German perhaps the man to take Southampton back to the Premier League, much like Martin pulled off during the memorable 2023/24 season.

Praised by Saints midfielder Finn Azaz for being “top level”, everything is pointing in the direction of Eckert being a very promising appointment with lots more to give.

Elche midfielder Rodrigo Mendoza, who’s already been compared to Sergio Busquets and Pedri, is seriously interesting Berta and co as a potential rising star in La Liga.

The 20-year-old is widely reported to be a target for Arsenal, and Romano has shared his own update on the matter — confirming their links.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano says that Berta is eyeing a ‘bargain’ Arsenal move for Mendoza, and it would represent a pretty similar deal to Mosquera.

The latter has justified every penny of his £13 million transfer fee from Valencia so far, with Mendoza coming as another potentially unmissable opportunity considering his £17.5 million release clause.

Rangers’ truly miserable European campaign continues, with their hopes of reaching the knockout stages now hanging by a thread.

On Thursday night, despite taking the lead through James Tavernier’s spot-kick, the Gers were held to a 1-1 draw by ten-man Braga at Ibrox, with the Arsenalists equalising shortly after Rodrigo Zalazar had been sent off for headbutting Nicolas Raskin.

This ended a sequence of seven successive European defeats, the longest streak in the club’s entire history, but they will almost certainly need to beat Ferencváros, Ludogorets Razgrad and Porto to stand any chance of reaching the Europa League knockout stages, which isn’t particularly likely.

Having finished eighth in last year’s inaugural league phase, before reaching the quarter-finals, this quite the fall from grace.

Much of the blame lies at those at boardroom level, hence why chief executive Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell were both sacked on Monday, much to the delight of many supporters.

Nevertheless, new manager Danny Röhl still has to build a cohesive team with the pieces he has been given, so which of Thelwell’s summer recruits did not impress on Thursday night?

Nasser Djiga at fault once again

The final Tuesday of the final international break of 2025 could prove to be a pivotal day in Rangers’ season.

Mere hours apart, one in Mount Florida and the other in well, Miami in actual Florida, both John Souttar and Derek Cornelius suffered long-term injuries that’ll see them sidelined until Christmas at least.

Thus, just as Röhl had found his first-choice centre-back pairing, he will continue to be without them going into the busiest period of the season, left with no choice but to keep picking Emmanuel Fernandez and Nasser Djiga, despite the continued poor performances of the latter.

Djiga was massively at fault for Braga’s crucial equaliser on Thursday night, completely misjudging a cross into the box which allowed Gabri Martínez to slot home.

The 23 year old joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from Crvena zvezda in January for a reported £10m, but barely featured for the Premier League side, suggesting why that might have been the case since making the loan move north of the border.

It did not start well for Djiga, sent off on his Premiership debut for tripping up Finlay Robertson as the Gers were held to a 1-1 draw by Dundee at Ibrox, before this inexplicable decision which allowed Romeo Vermant to score the first of Club Brugge’s nine goals in the Champions League play-off round.

Djiga, frankly, is costing Rangers points time and time again, which has to be a concern ahead of three winnable Premiership matches in a week against Falkirk, Dundee United and Kilmarnock, but which other starter from Thursday night may have just played himself out of contention?

Rangers summer signing who struggled vs Braga

Röhl made a couple of surprise selection decisions against Braga; Connor Barron came into midfield, while Max Aarons got the nod over Jayden Meghoma at left-back.

The Bournemouth loanee has been in and out the team all throughout the campaign, deployed in both full-back positions, but did not stake a claim for more regular minutes here.

The statistics document the Englishman’s tough night.

As the table documents, despite the fact only two Rangers players, namely Tavernier and Fernandez, had more touches of the ball than Aarons, he did very little with all this possession.

The full-back completed just 26 passes, fewer than Braga goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček, was accurate with zero crosses and turned over possession on 17 occasions.

Fair to say, the Rangers support have not been enamoured by Aarons from the very start.

Under Russell Martin, he was controversially starting Champions League qualifiers instead of long-standing captain Tavernier, which most fans were not on board with, especially when Aarons was sent off just eight minutes into their 6-0 annihilation at the hands of Club Brugge at Jan Breydelstadion.

More recently, Aarons has been asked to fill in on the left-side, which he can do, but does not suit him naturally, especially on the ball, having to play on his weaker side.

Thus, for upcoming Premiership matches, where Rangers will dominate possession, expect Röhl to recall Jayden Meghoma at left-back, even if he has been far from convincing either.

Max Cleworth emerged as the saviour for Wrexham as the defender grabbed a dramatic late equaliser to maintain an unbeaten run for Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac's side in the Championship. The hosts fell behind through an early goal from former Barcelona star Eidur Gudjohnsen's son, Andri, and it was only in the final minute of stoppage time that Cleworth found the equaliser to salvage a point for the hosts.

Cleworth to the rescue for Wrexham

Wrexham began the afternoon with confidence and control, stroking the ball around with composure and keeping Blackburn penned in for much of the first 10 minutes. But that early promise counted for little as the visitors struck with their very first meaningful attack to take a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. A quick move down the right opened Wrexham up. Ryoya Morishita found space to thread a pass into Ryan Alebiosu, who had been given far too much room to measure his delivery. The winger floated a teasing cross into the box, where Gudjohnsen rose above his marker to guide a looping header beyond Arthur Okonkwo. The goal stunned the home crowd after what had been a positive Wrexham start. Blackburn almost doubled their advantage moments later when Alebiosu again surged forward. His clipped cross found Yuki Ohashi arriving at the back post, but the Japanese forward miscued his volley badly and dragged it wide.

Despite falling behind, Wrexham recovered their structure and continued to probe. Their best moment of the half came from a move down the right when Ryan Longman sent in a precise delivery toward the far post. Captain James McClean met it cleanly with a firm header, only to crash it into the side-netting. But aside from that scare, Blackburn defended with discipline, shutting down space in midfield and forcing Wrexham to play in front of them rather than through them. As the interval approached, the visitors increasingly slowed the tempo, happy to protect their single-goal advantage. By half-time, Phil Parkinson’s men were left frustrated, trailing 1-0 and struggling to turn possession into genuine chances.

The second half began with Blackburn carrying the greater threat. Wrexham’s attempt to build momentum was abruptly interrupted at 57 minutes when a loose pass was intercepted high up the pitch. Ohashi darted into the penalty area, chopped onto his right foot, and forced Okonkwo into a strong save at his near post. Gudjohnsen, sniffing his second of the afternoon, pounced on the rebound but blazed over from close range. It was a massive let-off that kept Wrexham alive. Sensing the game slipping away, Parkinson made a bold triple substitution just before the hour mark. Josh Windass, George Dobson and Callum Doyle were all introduced in place of Lewis O’Brien, Ben Sheaf and Dan Scarr. However, the substitutes struggled to make an impact, and instead Makhtar Gueye could have scored the insurance goal for Blackburn after his cross took a wicked deflection and almost trickled into the near post. 

In the final quarter, the hosts, backed by a roaring home crowd, found a spring in their step. Blackburn were living dangerously, and Kiefer Moore, who had been an anonymous figure for most of the afternoon, came close to equalising in the 84th minute. The referee added five minutes, and from a set-piece, Wrexham finally found the leveller in the 95th minute. Dobson delivered a teasing cross into the box, which was headed back into the danger zone by Moore. The loose ball fell kindly for Broadhead, who unleashed a powerful volley towards goal. The shot took a deflection off Cleworth and nestled into the net to bring down the roof at the Racecourse. Following the draw, Wrexham climbed to the ninth spot with 26 points from 18 matches and will be back in action against Preston on December 6.

Although Cleworth's goal helped secure a point for Wrexham, it was a fortuitous effort that went in. On the other hand, Gudjohnsen's finish was a typical poacher's goal. He timed his run to perfection, crept behind his marker, and had little trouble putting his header into the back of the net. 

The big loser

Makhtar Gueye was introduced as a substitute in place of goalscorer Gudjohnsen in the 70th minute. He had a golden opportunity to double his team's lead, within a minute after coming on, but his attempt found the wrong side of the net. To make matters worse, he was on the goal line in the dying seconds but was a fraction late to react to Cleworth's deflection, and could only watch as the ball rolled across the line. An unlucky 20 minutes for the Senegalese!

The Blues are looking to sign the Newcastle star in the January transfer window, and he welcomes the interest from two of England’s biggest clubs, despite remaining happy at St. James’ Park.
