Southampton: Carl Anka fires warning to Saints board over Ralph Hasenhuttl’s future

The Athletic’s Carl Anka has fired a warning to Southampton’s board over Ralph Hasenhuttl’s future.

The former RB Leipzig boss has a contract with the Saints until the summer of 2021, and revealed himself that discussions regarding his or his players’ deals would not commence until the club reach 36 points – they are currently on 31.

Hasenhuttl has shown what he has in his managerial locker this season by steering Southampton’s season around, which looked bleak back in October following a 9-0 defeat to Leicester.

What did he say?

When asked in a Q&A session on Friday afternoon if he thinks bigger clubs will try and poach Hasenhuttl, Anka wrote: “I’ve said before, but I think Ralph is happy here. He’s got a great degree of autonomy, and if you look at the team’s he’s managed in the past he prefers family sedans to supercars.

“He DOES have a history of walking if the club fails in its promises to him however. So stay woke.”

RB Leipzig found this out the hard way

While it was not specifically documented that RB Leipzig had failed in their promises to Hasenhuttl, the 52-year-old did walk out on the Bundesliga side despite Sporting Director Ralf Rangnick wanting to keep hold of his first-team coach.

This is merely to provide some substantiation to what Anka claimed about Hasenhuttl having a ‘history’ of walking out on clubs, and it remains to be seen if Southampton are misleading the Austrian in any way, shape or form.

Someone’s got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?

If he keeps up his form, though – the Saints have won five and drawn one of their last eight Premier League games – then we presume that big clubs will be sitting up and taking notice of his accomplishments.

Hopefully, he can guide Southampton to five more points in the Premier League as quickly as possible, in order to shed more light on contract discussions when the club reach that magical 36-point mark.

Leeds fans react to Thomas Frank’s strong pre-game message

A number of Leeds United fans have taken to social media to react to some strong words from Brentford boss Thomas Frank ahead of Tuesday’s Championship affair.

Indeed, speaking during his press conference on Monday, Frank insisted that his side “have more momentum” than the Whites, who “couldn’t pick a worse place to play Tuesday night”, according to the Bees manager.

Leeds are still second in the Championship table but are now just two points clear of fifth-placed Brentford ahead of the huge match.

The club’s supporters feel that Frank’s words have now provided Marcelo Bielsa with the perfect pre-match team-talk for his players.

However, a lot of fans have claimed that Frank’s words carry some weight as Leeds have lost four of their last five in the Championship during a very tough run.

Call yourself a Leeds expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Brentford, on the other hand, have beaten Hull City and Middlesbrough in their last two, while they have won seven of their last eight league games on home soil.

Meanwhile, a lot of Leeds fans were furious with the performance of one player in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Souness accuses clubs in Man City transfer ban verdict

In a rather stunning turn of events, Manchester City have been banned from the Champions League for two seasons and will also have to pay a certain compensation for breaching the rules of Financial Fair Play.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all 25 of these obscure Man City signings…

Of course, this comes as a huge blow to the Citizens who have been aspiring to lift world football’s most coveted trophy.

Needless to say, few saw this outcome looming for Pep Guardiola and his side but it still remains to be seen whether the ban will stand or whether City’s appeal will be successful.

According to Graeme Souness, who spoke to Virgin Media Sport, however, the original sentence was still a bit too cruel as Man City are not the only culprit responsible for breaching the FFP rules.

Here’s what he said in full:

“I think it’s cruel on City. I don’t believe they’re the only club that’s guilty of this charge.”

But regardless of whether they are the only guilty club or not, that doesn’t change the current situation.

That they may not be the only side to break the rules does not suggest they are any less culpable.

Still, we’re yet to find out whether their complaints will be successful or not but it seems that not everyone is convinced this was a just ruling.

Spurs fans buzzing over Moussa Sissoko update

Tottenham Hotspur’s injury crisis is that severe, manager Jose Mourinho openly claimed he would like to skip to the summer as if it were a real-life game of Football Manager.

The Portuguese boss has suffered devastating blows to three first-team stars and now the transfer window is shut, he’ll have to make do with what he’s got.

Spurs have been without top goalscorer Harry Kane and recently Heung-min Son picked up a shock elbow injury that has ruled him out for the foreseeable future.

Midfield dynamo Moussa Sissoko has also been sat on the treatment table for quite some time but footage has emerged this week that should provide some encouragement.

And fans have been buzzing on social media at the thought of seeing the 30-year-old back in action sometime soon – even if he isn’t that elusive striker they are desperately craving for.

Here’s what has been said…

The Frenchman was labelled an “absolute monster” as well as a “beast” by some supporters whilst plenty of others can’t wait to see him back out on the pitch.

Sissoko has played 26 times in all competitions this campaign, but has been out injured since their New Year’s Day defeat to Southampton, per Transfermarkt.

He was even described as the “GOAT” aka. Greatest of all Time.

A further member of the Spurs faithful said his muscle in the engine room had been missed and that he wanted him fit soon so that he could begin to form a partnership with summer signing Tanguy Ndombele.

His fellow countryman has been regularly slammed by the crowd this season for his lack of fitness, so some couldn’t resist poking fun at him, claiming that Sissoko already looked fitter than the £55m club-record signing.

When did that happen?! Premier League experts will know which surprising clubs these stars once played for…

Sunderland should sell to Sammy Yu

Sunderland’s fortunes on the pitch have witnessed a staggering upturn in recent months.

After winning two of their first 14 matches under Phil Parkinson, they’ve now lost just once in their previous 15 games.

Amid that run of form, however, was a bold claim from Stewart Donald. At the beginning of January he confirmed that he’d be looking to sell the club as he looked for a way out of Sunderland.

Donald’s reign in the northeast has been full of negativity. The Mackems failed to make it out of League One and there’s also been failed promises and considerable fan backlash. In his statement in January, the businessman claimed he’d make money available for Sunderland to spend.

However, they went on to complete free transfers and loan arrivals in the transfer market.

Bloomberg claimed this month that Donald was searching for £40m in order to sell the Black Cats, but things weren’t looking too promising when Alan Nixon suggested no interested party was willing to pay that sort of money.

It’s unknown as to who may like to buy the club other than Sammy Yu – a Hong Kong businessman who’s had a longstanding interest in the Mackems.

In fact, his attraction to Sunderland existed even before Donald walked through the doors at the Stadium of Light. Speaking in an interview recently, he noted:

It’s fascinating to see a party register such a public recognition of their interest, but that’s certainly not a negative thing for Sunderland. After all, it’s clear they like the club and that’s summed up by how long they’ve wanted to invest at the Stadium of Light.

Yet, a takeover from Yu is unfortunately looking unlikely for the Black Cats. He said: “I sent him [Donald] another message asking if we could start negotiations again but, unfortunately, as of today we haven’t had any correspondence, and have therefore been unable to look at the club closer – such as the accounts and the infrastructure etc.

“I have been in football a long time, and my partner is also very knowledgable. We are very keen to do something in football. We love football.”

This is poor from Donald, however, who should be considering talks like this if he had any care for Sunderland. After all, this isn’t a party looking for a quick way into English football – they’ve had a pretty substantial interest in taking on clubs in this country for a while.

Yu helped the controversial Carson Yeung take over Birmingham while there has also been an attempt to buy Sheffield Wednesday.

Though, Sunderland is now the sole focus for Yu. There is a willing desire to do business with Donald, which is something that hasn’t been apparent until now.

If the Black Cats want things done quickly then this seems like the only feasible option. Donald needs to consider a discussion with Yu.

Meanwhile, one Sunderland ace has become a VICTIM of their good run of form…

Hatem Abd Elhamed sends message after comeback

Hatem Abd Elhamed has uploaded a post to Instagram after making his comeback from injury in Celtic’s 5-0 win over St Mirren.

The 5-cap Israel international suffered a serious groin injury in the 2-1 win over Lazio back in November, which cruelly ruled him out of the Scottish League Cup final against Rangers – the Hoops went on to record a 1-0 victory, although in unconvincing fashion after Alfredo Morelos missed a penalty with the scoreline at 0-0.

Despite that significant blow, the 28-year-old has battled back to play a part in Celtic’s surge towards a ninth successive Scottish Premiership title, and will also be available for the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Abd Elhamed was able to play nine minutes of the Bhoys’ win over St Mirren at the weekend, and took to Instagram after the final whistle to share his thoughts on his comeback at Celtic Park.

In addition to his message, Jeremie Frimpong also got involved in the action, sending a one-word response to his teammate which you can see below:

Spurs predicted XI vs RB Leipzig for UCL crunch match

Tottenham Hotspur will have to overcome an almighty task later this evening if they are to have any chance of qualifying for Europe’s elite stage.

Jose Mourinho’s men have sunk seven points adrift of the top four in the Premier League and are out of all domestic cup competitions with everything hinging on tonight’s second leg at RB Leipzig.

The Bundesliga outfit carry an away-goal advantage into the tie, so Spurs have it all to do if they are to progress into the next round of the competition.

They are also in a rut of five matches without a victory and also have copious injury troubles mounting up, but what sort of side will Mourinho select? Here’s what we are predicting…

There could be as many as five changes from the side that drew 1-1 at Burnley on Saturday evening.

Hugo Lloris is likely to continue as the shot-stopper between the sticks, but there may be changes in front of him with Mourinho sticking with a three-at-the-back system.

Jan Vertonghen shifts inside with Toby Alderweireld making way while Ryan Sessegnon is handed a rare chance at left wing-back. The 19-year-old has only been able to feature 11 times since his summer move from Fulham.

Meanwhile, in midfield, Harry Winks and Giovani Lo Celso return from having a rest at Turf Moor, which means Oliver Skipp and Tanguy Ndombele, who was pulled off at half-time anyway, drop to the bench,

Dele Alli, Spurs’ scorer from the spot against Burnley, will continue to lead the line with Troy Parrott settling for a substitute’s role.

He’ll again have Erik Lamela next to him on one wing while Lucas Moura takes the reins on the other side following his omission from the starting XI at the weekend.

From non-League to the Premier League: Where did these top-flight stars begin their careers?

There will be no Steven Bergwijn after as the Portuguese boss expects the winger to miss the remainder of the season through injury.

Celtic fans discuss Elhamed with mix of praise and mockery

Hatem Abd Elhamed hasn’t had the season he would have hoped for since joining Celtic last summer but he still has the support of fans to offer him comfort.

The Israel international turned 29 on Wednesday and supporters reacted to the milestone in a variety of ways, with some offering some words that weren’t so kind as they relate to his injury issues.

Elhamed has been sidelined for much of the season for that reason and has been limited to 14 appearances as a result, which is why his £1.6m move hasn’t worked out how both he and the club would have wished.

Despite that, he has been able to display his defensive quality, and many fans have been impressed with what he has offered, leading them to lavish praise on him as a result.

In the Europa League Elhamed has proved particularly useful, and it is possible that if he had played against Copenhagen if would have helped the Bhoys to a win, just as he did in both games against Lazio.

A return of two tackles and 2.5 interceptions per game show just how effective he has been at the back, which probably means Neil Lennon and the much of the fanbase have been left frustrated with his lack of availability.

That has led some fans to ridicule the player for his lack of showings, and if there is one thing to try and work on next season it will be ensuring that he is available for selection far more often.

Where is he from?! Can you name which obscure countries these famous players have represented?

Aston Villa youngster is banging on the first-team door

Aston Villa youngster Indiana Vassilev is banging on the club’s first-team door.

The 19-year-old began his career with the IMG Academy in Florida, but moved to Villa in 2018.

He has made 28 appearances in total for the U18s, scoring four goals and registering four assists, playing as a left winger, a right winger, an attacking midfielder and as a striker.

This season, though, he is carving out a niche as the club’s striker at U23 level.

Indeed, throughout this campaign, he has scored six goals in 22 Premier League 2 outings, while also registering two assists.

And it appears that his talent has not gone unnoticed.

In addition to that, he played ten minutes in the FA Cup against Fulham, and 16 minutes in the EFL Cup versus Leicester City.

Dean Smith, clearly, believes that Vassilev can make a major impact in the first-team and is slowly integrating him into the side.

He comes with rave reviews too, his former coach Rusty Scarborough once said:

“On the field, you know he’s out there, he’s a leader, people follow him. The technical aspect he’s developed at a young age so now he’s phenomenal on the ball, passing, dribbling, shooting, heading, receiving.”

Red Herring or Real Hero: Only hardcore Villa fans will get all of them right….

It remains to be seen, of course, if his playing time will grow next season, particularly if Villa do fall into the Championship.

But he certainly appears to be ready; when the chance comes, he will surely take it.

Meanwhile, Villa are eyeing a genuinely pointless summer move!

Celtic fans react to footage of Kristoffer Ajer’s #TrebleTreble challenge

Lots of Celtic fans have been reacting to a clip posted by the club of Kristoffer Ajer, with more than a few Hoops fans taking the opportunity to have a dig at the Norwegian defender. The Celtic Park faithful were extremely excited by Ajer when he first emerged in the first-team, even drawing comparisons to Liverpool superstar and former Hoops ace Virgil van Dijk.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

This was mainly down to his composure on the ball and reading of the game, but the trouble with this languid style is when things go bad it looks lazy and just downright awful.

That’s exactly what happened in the Europa League defeat to Copenhagen, as fans slammed Ajer’s display and even called him the “most overrated player in Celtic’s modern historyâ€.

After the club shared footage of the £2.7m-rated (Transfermarkt) ace doing the #TrebleTreble challenge, which is three touches with each body part without the ball touching the floor, the reactions flooded in and not all of them were very supportive…
