Five Championship prodigies on West Ham’s radar

The Premier League often overlooks the ChampionshipÂas a viable recruitment pool, often favouring cheaper, better-proven talents from foreign top flights instead. But England’s second tierÂstill has a lot to offer in terms of future Premier League stars,ÂshouldÂyou know where to look, and just to prove it, here’s a list of FIVE ChampionshipÂprodigies that have reportedly caught West Ham’sÂtransfer attention. The East London side snapped up Diego Poyet and Aaron Cresswell from Championship clubs during the summer. Could one of these FIVE follow their paths in the near future?

NATHAN REDMOND

The Hammers were strongly linked with Nathan Redmond prior to Norwich City’s £2million swoop for the former Birmingham City youngster in summer 2013:

And the East London side might feel compelled to revive their interest in the touchline-hugging winger after his impressive start to the season.

The 20 year-old’s no goals and three assists in 15 Championship appearances may be rather ordinary output, but statistically, he’s one of the Championship’s most effective attackers. Redmond’s not only at the top of the division’s dribbling charts:

But his 3.2 chances created per match (represented as key passes) is the third-best return in the league:

A regular for England across the junior levels, amassing nine goals and 54 caps from the U16s to U21s, the wide-man is no stranger to the radars of top Premier League clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester City. Here’s a look at Redmond in action:

Having shown glimpses of his potential in the top flight last season as the Canaries failed to stave off relegation, and now demonstrating his dominance of the Championship, if Norwich don’t bounce back as expected this year, it’s likely someone will take Redmond off their hands.

Recent speculation however suggests Southampton are preparing a £5million offer in January.

Dan Burn

Measuring in at a whopping 6 foot 7, everything about centre-back Dan Burn screams Sam Allardyce. The Fulham starlet has been linked with an Upton Park switch in recent weeks, amid concerns that the Hammers could be forced to sell Winston Reid in January:

Not to suggest height is the only thing the West Ham boss looks for in a transfer target – the 22 year-old has largely (excuse the pun) impressed this season City last term, despite the Cottagers struggling at the less flattering end of the league table, following a coming-of-age loan spell at Birmingham. Here’s a look at his stats over the last 18 months:

Burn struggled during his prior Premier League outings and the technical side of his game still requires some work. But he’s an unstoppable force in the air and is at his best when sticking to the basics, which fits perfectly into the defensive mantra West Ham have adopted under Allardyce.

The Irons boss was surprisingly coy when asked about Burn in this week’s press conference:

Whether that rules out a January bid remains open to interpretation, but clearly, the Blyth-born defender has caught somebody’s attention at Upton Park.

MOSES ODUBAJO

Spurs and West Ham were both linked to League One starlet Moses Odubajo during the summer:

…following a campaign in which his twelve goals across all competitions fired Leyton Orient to the League One play-off final – where the 21 year-old netted this absolute stunner against Rotherham:

Brentford snapped up Odujabo, a winger-come-right-back, instead and he’s since adapted well to life in the Championship, as shown below:

Quick, powerful, industrious, versatile and boasting an impressive eye for goal, the Greenwich-born youngster would give the Hammers’ coaching staff a plethora of positive assets to work with.

He won’t be attainable until next summer at the earliest, but should Odubajo remain consistent for the Bees this season, his prior Premier League suitors will undoubtedly revive their interest.

ADAM REACH

According to Here Is The City, West Ham are currently monitoring the development of Middlesbrough winger Adam Reach, despite him recently penning new terms at the Riverside.

The tricky winger, whose understandably earned comparisons with fellow Boro academy products Stewart Downing and Adam Johnson, has been in decent form this season, finding one goal and two assists in 13 starts – including this cheeky finish against Fulham back in October:

He also netted past Liverpool in the Capital One Cup:

The 21 year-old’s output may not be outstanding, but he’s still acquainting himself to second tier level after productive loan spells at Shrewsbury and Bradford last season, ending both tenures with three goals.

Furthermore, he’s averaged the most successful dribbles of any Boro player this season, as shown below:

With Reach recently agreeing a new four-year deal however, the Boro starlet’s market value is well protected.

Chris Solly

Perhaps Chris Solly is a little old to be considered a genuine Championship prodigy at 23 years of age, but nonetheless, the Charlton defender remains a target the Hammers have run the rule over in the past:

There are certainly better-rounded full-backs in the English second tier but Solly does the simple things well – particularly tackling, with his current average joint-top of the Championship’s tackle charts:

He offers experience too, having made 136 league outings for Charlton since his debut in 2009. Solly’s also won the Player of the Year award twice in that time period, in 2012 and 2013, which tells you how highly-rated he is around the Valley.

The attacking side of Solly’s game is improving too, as the 5 foot 8 defender continues to recover from a near-season-long spell on the sidelines. He’s got the joint-most assists of any Addick this season:

..and netted this absolute stunner against Blackpool at the end of last term:

Should Carl Jenkinson’s loan move not be made permanent at the end of the season, West Ham may revive their interest in the former England U17.

Manchester United step up pursuit of Dortmund ace

Manchester United have been handed encouragement in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowsi, after the clubs chief executive admits ‘economical factors’ will decide his future, the Telegraph reports.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been a long term admirer of the towering Polish striker and even personally went to scout him at the Etihad Stadium in October while he was in action against Manchester City in the Champions League.

Dortmund reportedly rejected an offer for the 24-year-old from United in August, the same month that Ferguson landed Robin van Persie from Arsenal. However the United chief still seems interested in bringing the striker to Old Trafford.

With Lewandowsi rejecting Dortmund’s offers of extending his current contract which expires in 2014, the clubs chief executive has admitted that the right fee could prize their star forward away from the club.

“We will have to make decisions in this case at the end of the season. We may decide on economical factors.” Watzke said. The Polish international has a prolific record for Dortmund scoring 39 goals in 82 league games and it is understood that he is keen to move to the Premier League, with United his favoured destination. The Red Devils also signed currently injured Japanese international Shinji Kagawa from the German club in the last transfer window.A deal for Lewandowski in the summer looks most likely and if he was to join, he would add to an array of talented forwards at Old Trafford with Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Danny Wellbeck, and Javier Hernandez already at the club.

In Focus: Tottenham attacker Eriksen is a target for Barcelona

According to The Guardian, Barcelona want to bring Tottenham Hotspur attacker Christian Eriksen to Camp Nou at the end of the season.

What’s the story?

Barcelona spent big to sign Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool in January, but it is understood that the Spanish giants are still looking to improve their midfield as Andres Iniesta enters the latter stages of his career.

The future of Ivan Rakitic is also said to be up in the air, with the Croatia international currently being linked with a move to Manchester United.

According to The Guardian, Barcelona have identified Tottenham’s Eriksen as the perfect player to boost their squad in this summer’s transfer window.

Eriksen has been with Tottenham for the last five years, and there is no question that the Denmark international has developed into one of the finest attacking midfielders in the European game.

[ad_pod ]

Spurs will of course be desperate to keep hold of the 26-year-old, but it would surely be difficult to resist the interest if Barcelona came calling at the end of the season.

Is Eriksen good enough for Barcelona?

Eriksen’s numbers for Tottenham speak volumes. Indeed, the Dane has scored 51 goals and registered 65 assists in 214 appearances for Spurs in all competitions.

He actually managed 65 assists in 163 games for Ajax before making the move to England, and there is no question that the attacker has improved over the last couple of years.

Indeed, the 26-year-old, who is believed to be on £75,000 a week at Spurs, has been key to Tottenham’s recent impressive form, with nine goals and nine assists in 35 matches in all competitions during the 2017-18 campaign.

It is not a surprise that there is talk of interest from Barcelona, and there is no question that Eriksen has the ability to operate at the top level.

Indeed, he has impressed in the Champions League this season, and it will be very interesting to see whether Barcelona make an official move this summer.

Will it be a season of struggle for Crystal Palace?

Over the past five years, it has been a whirlwind experience for everyone at Crystal Palace. On the brink of administration, a fierce relegation battle and Championship survival on the last day of the season, winning a play-off final to get promoted to the Premier League and surpassing everyone’s expectations by finishing 11th in England’s top flight are some of the highs and lows that the Eagles fans have gone through. It’s safe to say that there is never a dull moment at Crystal Palace.

At the start of the 2013/2014 campaign, many were shocked at the sacking of the eccentric Ian Holloway, with his character alone seemingly being the main reason why fans trusted in the former Blackpool boss. But no one knew how much of a success Tony Pulis was going to be. Sitting at the foot of the Premier League table when Pulis took over the club in November, the ex-Stoke manager used his credentials and fantastic football knowledge to maintain his record of never being relegated as a manager. The South East London club were a force and struck fear into many an opposition manager when the Welshman was at the helm.

Now times have changed with former Sheffield United, QPR and Leeds United gaffer Neil Warnock returning for his second spell at Palace after Pulis had disagreements with chairman Steve Parish over transfers which forced him to resign, something that shocked English football. Currently sitting in 16th place, two places above the dreaded relegation zone, the Eagles are no longer the force they once were under the stewardship of Warnock, and the risk of a season back in the second tier of English football for the 2015/2016 season looms.

The comparison between Warnock and Pulis at Palace show the latter’s Eagles side conceded less goals, had both more shots and more shots on target, produced more accurate crosses and won more tackles and interceptions. However, it doesn’t matter what club Pulis is managing, the former Plymouth Argyle chief will always be associated with long ball football. Under the guidance of Warnock, Palace have had more possession, scored more goals, made more successful dribbles and are fouled more often than the Crystal Palace under Pulis. The anthesis of ‘tika-taka’ football, Pulis set up his sides in a superb defensive manner, while Warnock likes his sides to play more open.

Last weekend’s defeat at home to table toppers Chelsea was a prime example of what could have been. Palace were aiming to emulate what they achieved last season when they took maximum points from Jose Mourinho’s men thanks to a John Terry own goal. It could have been the same again, had it not been for the sending off of centre half Damian Delaney. Unlike the management of Pulis, Palace will not be picking up as many unexpected points against the top teams. Nevertheless, Warnock’s Palace are more likely to beat the teams around them, especially at home where they benefit from fantastic support, as he encourages his teams to attack. This is why Palace will spend another season in the top flight.

Arsenal on transfer alert as Spaniard declares his desire to quit

Athletico Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente has declared that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season, according to the Daily Telegraph.

A host of Premier League clubs including Arsenal are believed to be keen, and are free to discuss terms with the forward next month.

The 27-year-old has fallen out of favour in Spain after attempting to force a move away from Bilbao during the summer.

His current contract is set to expire at the end of the season and he announced in a press conference that once his deal is finished he will be moving on:

“I am going to leave on June 30,

“I want to develop as a player and try something new.”

He went on to claim that his decision is not motivated by the financial benefits of joining a big club:

“It isn’t about money because the offer the club made was irresistible. The media have not helped with the negotiations and it is one of the things that has generated the bad atmosphere around me out on the pitch.

“This has encouraged me not to renew my contract; this and many other things.

“I took the decision when I went out for the first Europa League game at San Mames (in August).

Llorente also hit back at rumours that he has acted in an unprofessional manner to force a transfer:

“Most of what has come out in the press is lies and this has turned people against me. This has meant when I run out on to the pitch people whistle at me.

“There is a sector of the crowd who do not want me but I feel loved by the majority.”

Aston Villa right to take firm Chester stance

According to The Mirror, Aston Villa will refuse to sell key defender James Chester for less than £20m in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

Villa’s financial predicament means that the club will be forced to sell key players this summer, with Jack Grealish amongst those expected to depart.

[ad_pod ]

Chester is also attracting a host of interest following an impressive 2017-18 season, but according to The Mirror, Villa are not prepared to sell for less than £20m.

Brighton & Hove Albion are reportedly sniffing around the centre-back, but Steve Bruce’s side are seemingly not prepared to make it easy for the Premier League club to sign the Wales international in this summer’s transfer window.

Chester played in all 46 of Villa’s Championship matches during the regular season, in addition to featuring in all three playoff fixtures.

It is going to prove difficult for Villa to keep Chester this summer, but they have a right to fight off bids that are short of the defender’s true value.

How much is Chester actually worth?

Well, transfermarkt.co.uk have valued Chester at £7.2m, but Villa appear to want more than double that figure for the 29-year-old in order to let him leave.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”257600″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Aston Villa’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Championship season”]

The former Manchester United youngster has been with Villa since 2016, and has been outstanding in their last two Championship campaigns.

Chester, whose current deal runs until June 2020, also has Premier League experience having turned out for both Hull City and West Bromwich Albion at the highest level ahead of a transfer to Villa Park.

In all honestly, £20m is perhaps too steep for a player who has previously been relegated from the Premier League, but there is no question that he has the ability to play in the top tier.

Villa’s financial problems has placed them in a difficult position this summer, but there is no question that they have the right to take a firm stance when it comes to Chester’s future.

Leeds fans want Vieira to realise his potential

Leeds United will attempt to bounce back from Friday’s 3-0 defeat at Middlesbrough when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship on Wednesday night. It is a huge game for head coach Paul Heckingbottom, who is already feeling the heat of the supporters following a difficult start to his tenure. The Leeds fans are not happy with the performance levels of a number of their players at the moment, and many believe that it is time that Ronaldo Vieira stepped up to become a certain starter for the Championship team.[ad_pod ]Vieira is still just 19 years of age, but he has been with Leeds since 2015, and is yet to fully establish himself in the first team. The Brazilian, who is valued at £1.8m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has made 24 appearances in all competitions this season, however, with 20 of those coming in the Championship. It would be fair to say that the club’s fans rate Vieira, and they have challenged the teenager to become a key player between now and the end of the season.A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

The cautionary tale of this fallen Tottenham star

The rise and fall of Andros Townsend is a tale any young English footballer, especially those who play on the wing, should always bear in mind.

Indeed, the Tottenham talent and the short-lived arc of his international career is preceded by many; Stewart Downing, Aaron Lennon, Adam Johnson and Shawn Wright-Phillips to name a few. Yet, recalling Three Lions internationals who have endured rises so sudden as the Lilywhites wideman, and falls so equally inevitable, proves a near impossible task.

On New Year’s day 2013, just eighteen months ago, Andros Townsend was a relatively anonymous name to the majority of England fans, standing out only for its unique Cypriot twist. Eight loan spells in the Football League, ranging from Yeovil Town in 2009 to Birmingham City in 2012, had brought the winger little closer to the first team at White Hart Lane, let alone the Three Lions seniors.

A loan stay with relegation-bound QPR in January that year, later labelled a transfer masterstroke by former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, quickly changed all that. Compared to the immense number of Premier League mercenaries compounded at Loftus Road, the then-21 year-old’s fearless approach, committing defenders and taking upon himself the responsibility to score goals, quickly caught the attention of his parent club and Roy Hodgson.

England hadn’t possessed a dynamic winger like that – so comfortable in jinking his way past defenders, so confident in attempting to find the net from long range – for generations, since the marauding displays of Chris Waddle. Redknapp compared him to Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben, a likening that in the long-run, has proved impossible for Townsend to live up to.

The rise in stock at QPR, combined with the limited quality available to Hodgson out wide, amalgamated into Townsend playing an important role in the latter fixtures of England’s World Cup qualifying campaign. The defining moment; a Man of the Match display upon his competitive debut, typified by a low, swerving shot from outside the area that exploded into the back of the net, sealing  a 4-1 win against Montenegro.

It remains one of the most aesthetic England goals in recent memory – not a robust challenge, hit-n-hope cross or scuffed finish in sight. The open-armed, rosy-cheeked effigy of Townsend celebrating was strewn across  the back pages of every tabloid and broadsheet the following morning, the Tottenham youngster hailed his country’s newest hero, a shining example of the loan system working to full effect and England’s future not being so bleak as many were suggesting.

Yet, scoring his first international goal at just 22 years of age will most likely forge the highest point of Townsend’s playing career. Fast forward to the present day, a year on from that worldly strike against Montenegro, and the one-time prodigy is more commonly discussed as a bargaining chip in Tottenham’s transfer plans. A Townsend-plus-cash swap deal for Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez was mooted regularly by the press throughout the summer.

So where did it all go wrong for the Lilywhites winger? In the space of twelve months, he’s gone from England hero to Tottenham zero, a regular target of criticism from the Spurs fan base and overtaken in the Three Lions fold by the likes of Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley and Adam Lallana.

Injuries have unquestionably played their part.  I’m sure we all remember Townsend lying unconscious in a photographer’s pit after crashing into an advertising board, also spraining his wrist, and in April this year, the Spurs hot-shot picked up an ankle injury that ruled him out of the World Cup. But for the winger, Hodgson, England and their fans, this was probably a blessing in disguise.

The prevailing issue being that within the time between Townsend’s goal against  Montenegro and his World-Cup ending injury, the level of improvement shown at club level was minimal, in fact, the Spurs youngster had arguably regressed.

We all knew about Townsend’s pace, we all knew about his ability to test ‘keepers from long-range. In his first season in the Tottenham starting XI however, these were the only two traits the England winger appeared interested in demonstrating, no matter how ineffective they proved to be.

He took 56 attempts at goal last term, 49 from outside the box, yet Townsend’s only contribution to Tottenham’s goal tally was a solitary mishit cross, which somehow looped it’s way over Aston Villa’s Brad Guzan. That gave him a conversion rate, fortuitously considering, of just 2%. It also made his 2.7 dribbles per match, the fourth most of any player in the Premier League last season, rather redundant.

Have we been too harsh on Townsend? Perhaps so. In other countries, young wingers are allowed, or even expected, to be greedy in the hope that it will eventually hone their skills to a more effective and consistent level. But the Premier League is a difficult training ground for developing players; often pressures are so intense and results so important that even youngsters are expected to be somewhere close to the finished article, regardless of the amount of games under their belts.

Yet in my opinion, as is now a recurring, sinister trend amongst young English players, Townsend’s fifteen minutes of fame came too soon. Had Hodgson been patient in letting the 23 year-old  create a role for himself at Tottenham before exposing him to the inevitable higher scrutiny placed on England internationals, perhaps there wouldn’t be such a dark cloud of disappointment lingering over him now.

Another, possibly more popular, explanation, would be that  the Lilywhites starlet was always punching above his weight; a mixture of decent form and youthful enthusiasm making him stand out amid the dearth of exciting young quality in the England set-up at the time.

Either way, the captivating performances spawned from Townsend’s self-centred style of play was always unsustainable. Failing to adapt his game to compensate for this inevitability remains the youngster’s biggest crime, but one must consider what effect overconfidence, created by an excessively premature inaugural England call-up, has had on Townsend’s mindset over the last twelve months.

Unfortunately, although the rise and fall of Andros Townsend is an extreme case in terms of highs, lows and time scale, it is very much a typical saga for young English players.

It could be worse Nando, you could be one of these guys…

Roberto Martinez commits to Wigan

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that he sees his long term future lying in the Premier League at the DW Stadium.

There was intense speculation in the summer that the Spaniard was set to move to this weekend’s opposition, before he decided to commit to the Wigan project.

The 41 year old insists that it is natural for a manager to consider their prospects at a football club, from time to time, but now he believes a bright future lies ahead for him with the Latics.

“Everyone has to consider their future and assess the direction of the football club. I am very honoured to be the manager of this football club. With the new facilities and training ground we are in a very good place.” Martinez told talkSPORT.

“I believe in building football clubs. You can only leave a football club when it is right for the football club for you to leave it

“I can never break that loyalty with my chairman, when I leave he will make that decision for me”

The former Swansea boss was also questioned upon what the key to his side’s late rally was at the end of last season and the Spaniard was keen to hail the successful change in formation.

Harry Wilson would give Leeds strike-force the fear factor next season

Leeds United are interested in signing Liverpool winger Harry Wilson on loan, according to the Yorkshire Post.

What’s the story?

21-year-old Wilson spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull City where he enjoyed a successful spell, scoring seven and assisting three goals in 13 appearances for the Tigers.

The tricky winger took Gareth Bale’s record of the youngest player to ever play for Wales and is considered a potential star of the future.

According to the report, Leeds will have to see off unnamed Premier League interest in Wilson who is valued at £900,000 on Transfermarkt.

A real coup for Leeds

In his brief spell at Hull, Wilson showed he has real talent that belies his young age.

He runs directly at defenders and has a great end product as well, as shown by his strong goal and assist ratio.
