Exclusive: Leeds tipped to make January move amid Patrick Bamford worry

Leeds United have made an admirable start to their first season back in England’s top flight after 16 years of waiting.

The Whites have already banked impressive results including a win over Everton and a surprise 1-1 draw against Manchester City.

However, Marcelo Bielsa seems to rely too much on star striker Patrick Bamford and this has been made clear on several occasions this campaign.

Indeed, the 27-year-old is the club’s top scorer this term by some margin with eight goals. The next highest scoring Leeds player is Mateusz Klich, who has just two to his name (via BBC Sport).

The gap in stats in worrying for the Whites, who are in need of an extra injection of creativity.

Rob Lee spoke to Football FanCast about this and he believes that Victor Orta must take to the market in January and recruit a partner for Bamford.

“Patrick Bamford has done brilliant, I think he’s done a fantastic job,” the ex-midfielder said. “He’s their focal point, he plays every game, he’s scoring goals – which people probably questioned whether he would in the Premier League. But I think they need someone who can help him.”

Whilst Leeds aren’t in any danger right now, they risk slipping into extremely hot water if Bamford is to pick up an injury at all throughout the season. Bielsa also risks over-working him as he is currently the only source of the team’s goals.

Come January, Orta and Andrea Radrizzani must put their heads together and poach someone who can lighten the load on Bamford’s shoulders and help the Whites develop their attack.

Leeds: Raphinha could cause Alex Telles a lot of problems on Sunday

Leeds will be on cloud nine after their midweek thriller against Newcastle gave them a well-deserved three points to hoist them further up the Premier League table. The Championship winners hit the Magpies for five goals, with five individual goal-scorers impressing on the night.

Their next test will come as they face Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford. It will be a very tasty affair as both sides are coming off the back of a hard-fought victory and neither will be prepared to drop points.

Marcelo Bielsa’s secret weapon comes in the form of Raphinha, who has been troublesome for the opposition down the right-hand side. Whilst he may have just the one Premier League goal so far this season, his ability to create chances and break down defences has been crucial for Leeds.

In his last outing against Newcastle, Raphinha made two key passes, completed 100% of his attempted long balls and 100% of his dribbles (via Sofascore). Comparing that to the performance of Alex Telles for Man United against Sheffield United, the defender could be in for a difficult game.

The Reds’ summer signing had a tough time against the Blades, losing the ball 24 times and struggling to create his usual sharp long-range passes from the backline. If Telles is up against a speedster like Raphinha, he could easily be forced into a mistake and runs the risk of losing possession just like he did at Bramall Lane.

Bielsa’s creative winger has attracted a lot of praise for his performances in his maiden Leeds season. Graeme Souness recently labelled him a “flair player” and lauded his work ethic both on and off the ball. The £27,000 per week playmaker has already shown his promising potential as a player the team has been crying out for to help Patrick Bamford break down tough opposition defences.

Southampton should swerve signing Omar Colley in January

Southampton were reported to have made a bid for Sampdoria defender Omar Colley during the summer transfer window and they look to have now been handed a boost in their potential hopes of signing the centre-back in January, with the Serie A side now reportedly open to selling him.

It was suggested during the summer that the Saints were planning to bid €15 million (£13.4 million) for the Gambian defender but a move to the South Coast club never materialised.

However, Calcionews24 have now suggested that Blucerchiati are now open to selling the defender, as he has been relegated to the bench in recent weeks.

The 28-year-old has made just two appearances in Serie A so far this season, in which he put in mixed displays, earning a disappointing 6.05 rating in the 3-0 defeat against Juventus, whilst a goal in a 3-2 defeat against Benevento earned him a much more impressive 7.41 rating (per WhoScored).

Southampton’s centre-backs have been impressive so far this season, with Jan Vestergaard currently the club’s third-best performer in the Premier League, having averaged a superb 7.29 rating (per WhoScored). The Dane’s rejuvenation in recent weeks does make you wonder if Colley would still be a useful addition for Hasenhuttl.

Jan Bednarek has also impressed, having averaged a solid 6.84 rating across eight Premier League appearances, suggesting that it would be difficult for Colley to break up that current partnership.

While Jack Stephens has struggled at times this season, with the 26-year-old’s 6.40 average rating from his four top-flight appearances perhaps something for Hasenhuttl to worry about, he provides able back-up, while the club are still yet to see a glimpse of summer buy Mohamed Salisu.

WhoScored suggests that Colley’s strengths are aerial duels and interceptions, whilst he has no significant weaknesses, so perhaps he could be compared to former Saints man Virgil van Dijk, who has established himself as one of the world’s best defenders since joining Liverpool for £75 million.

That said, having kept four Premier League clean sheets already this term, maybe the south coast outfit should have other priorities if they want to buy in January.

Sheffield Wednesday: Fans react as Andy Hinchcliffe believes Owls can have a good season

Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping that winning their first game of the Championship season against Cardiff City is a sign of what is to come from their campaign.

They need to have a very good start as they already have a disadvantage after being deducted 12 points by the EFL, so they have to win three more games to be on zero.

Dom Howson tweeted out an article by Andy Hinchcliffe, who is a pundit for Sky Sports, who believes the Owls can make a push for the top-six this season.

It looks to have come as a bit of surprise to some that support Wednesday, and this is understandable for a couple of reasons. The main one being because they have the points deduction to battle and the other is due to the fact that it is only the first game of the campaign so to be making such a judgement before he has seen some consistent form from the season seems like a very early call.

However it does highlight that the Owls were very good against Cardiff last weekend, and if they can continue to play like this, there is no doubt that supporters of the club could be in for a good season.

Here is what fans said following the tweet:

Southampton: Saints preparing to sanction second temporary switch to Stoke City for Angus Gunn

Southampton will consider allowing Angus Gunn to make another loan move to Stoke City next summer, if the 24-year-old impresses at the Bet365 Stadium this term.

Gunn departed from the South coast on deadline day, completing a loan move to Stoke to replace the departing Jack Butland. The keeper needed to go and get regular game time after falling down the pecking order at St. Mary’s over the last 12 months.

Southampton will need to monitor keeper’s progress

The 24-year-old had started last season as Southampton’s first-choice keeper and he did go onto make ten appearances in the Premier League (Sofascore). However, following the 9-0 battering at home to Leicester City, Gunn lost confidence and his place in the side after conceding an average of 2.5 goals per match (Sofascore).

The keeper is still thought to be in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans for the future, but the Saints are now prepared to sanction another loan move for him next summer, per The Sun on Sunday (25/10; p 61). That though will depend on whether the 24-year-old can establish himself as Stoke’s number one during the rest of the campaign.

Gunn has yet to make his first appearances for Stoke with Adam Davies maintaining their number one spot so far. The Saints will be continuing to monitor the keeper’s situation with the Potters and decide in the summer whether it is worth sending him out on loan again, per The Sun on Sunday (25/10; p 61).

Gunn needs to take his chance to impress

The keeper went into the start of last season firmly in the plans of Hasenhuttl, who had described Gunn as having a ‘big future’ in the past. However, the 24-year-old has now found himself behind both Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster in the pecking order at St. Mary’s after a challenging first half of the campaign last term.

The stopper has been granted a chance to re-find some form and get his career back on track, but it seems he could have to bide his time to get into the Stoke side as well. If he impresses in the Championship it would be worthwhile sending him out on loan again given he is unlikely to take McCarthy’s place.

Phil Hay confirms Leeds close to clinching Joe Gelhardt signing

According to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay, Leeds could confirm the signing of Wigan starlet Joe Gelhardt imminently.

What did he say?

The 18-year-old has enjoyed somewhat of a breakthrough campaign with the Latics, making 19 appearances for the senior side across all competitions.

Now, Hay has revealed that there don’t seem to be any hitches that could prevent a move from happening, and even suggested that things could all be signed off by Monday.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

He said: “This transfer is a long way down the line. There are no issues with his medical or personal terms and Leeds are happy to meet the price set by Wigan’s administrators. It comes down to whether Gelhardt wants to join and sources close to him have told The Athletic that the move should go through on Monday. A box ticked, just about.”

Victor Orta securing the future

At just 18, Gelhardt is hardly likely to come in and replace Patrick Bamford as Leeds’ starting striker for the new Premier League season.

There’s every chance that the starlet may find himself with the academy teams to begin with at Elland Road, before potentially featuring in match-day squads and making substitute appearances later down the line.

Gelhardt didn’t complete the full 90 minutes for Wigan last season, and Marcelo Bielsa surely won’t be dropping him into the deep end soon after joining a new side.

But in securing his signing before rival clubs start circling, Victor Orta has ensured Leeds have snapped up a young talent who could turn into a first-team star of the future.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs move one step closer to signing Timothy Castagne, bad news for Walker-Peters

Tottenham are moving one step closer to signing Atalanta star Timothy Castagne this summer.

Spurs have been hit harder than most by these unprecedented circumstances, as major events scheduled to take place in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have been cancelled or postponed, which has led to Daniel Levy borrowing a huge sum of £175m from the Bank of England to cover the costs.

Therefore, Tottenham are not expected to be busy in the transfer market, as Jose Mourinho will largely have to rely on organising swap deals, signing free agents and hunting for bargains in the summer.

The Portuguese has made it clear he wants to improve his defence as the Lilywhites have leaked goals for fun all season long.

Serge Aurier is the club’s only designated right-back and Mourinho will have a problem if he picks up an injury. While Japhet Tanganga can fill in if required, Kyle Walker-Peters is currently on loan at Southampton.

According to Le10 Sport, as per The Daily Express, plans are in motion for Mourinho to hold talks with Castagne.

Spurs are seemingly hellbent on signing the Belgian, which spells bad news for Walker-Peters.

Like every other good manager before him, Mourinho will know that sorting out a solid defence is just as important as having a strong attack.

Castagne has emerged as one of Europe’s brightest talents after arriving at Atalanta from Genk for £5.85m in 2017. The 24-year-old has played 21 games in Serie A, scoring 1 goal, supplying 1 assist, winning 1.3 tackles per game and earning a pass accuracy rating of 85% so far (WhoScored).

He is only one year older than Walker-Peters, which doesn’t bode well for the academy graduate, who has fallen out of favour with Mourinho after taking a pot-shot at the boss on the Saints’ official website.

The 23-year-old has played every single minute of Southampton’s last three games, helping Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side beat Watford and Manchester City.

However, the fact that Mourinho is actively pursuing Castagne is not a good sign for Walker-Peters, coupled with the fact the head coach is willing to let him go.

Whether or not he will return to Spurs in the summer remains to be seen.

Tottenham fans, should Daniel Levy sign Timothy Castagne in the summer? Let us know down below!
