Nyoka voted out as president of CSA

Mtutuzeli Nyoka has been voted out as president of Cricket South Africa (CSA) for the second time this year at a special board general board meeting in Johannesburg. Nyoka was removed by an “overwhelming majority” after being accused of various misdemeanours, the most serious of which was bringing the organisation into disrepute. Vice-president AK Khan will serve as acting president until August 2012, when the next elections are scheduled.

Gerald Majola v Mtutuzeli Nyoka

July 2010 – President Mtutuzeli Nyoka wants an external investigation into the payment of R4.7 million (US$671,428) in bonuses to 40 CSA staff, including chief executive Gerald Majola, after the hosting of the IPL and Champions Trophy in 2009, as they were not passed through the board’s remunerations committee.
August 2010 – CSA sets up an independent review committee to investigate the bonus payments despite Nyoka’s calls for an external inquiry.
November 2010 – The independent committee clears Majola of any wrongdoing but finds that CSA’s corporate governance procedures were to blame and in need of a revamp.
Jan 2011 – Nyoka is asked to resign by CSA for continuing to push for an external investigation and South Africa’s sports minister steps in to try and resolve the conflict.
Feb 2011 – Nyoka is voted out of office for continuing to argue for the possibility of wrongdoing within the organisation.
April 2011 – Nyoka is reinstated as president after the court finds his removal was improper. The court also criticises the reasons for Nyoka’s removal and grants him the right to subject CSA to full financial scrutiny.
May 2011 – Accounting and consultancy firm KPMG is appointed to conduct an external audit in the bonus payments.
July 2011 – The audit report, which has not been released to the public, finds that Majola may have breached the Companies’ Act on four occasions and advises CSA to seek legal advice on how to proceed.
August 2011 – CSA appoint advocate Azhar Bham to provide opinion, which is delivered to the board orally at their AGM and results in a severe reprimand for Majola. CSA also resolves to improve its corporate governance.
September 2011 – Nyoka and his lawyer are informed of the proposal to remove him on September 8, when CSA’s board met at the conclusion of their annual conference.
October 2011 – CSA votes to remove Nyoka again.

Nyoka was not present at the meeting on the grounds of poor health but sent a deposition to be read out in his absence. The CSA board decided that he “was not in a position to offer leadership,” and ousted him with immediate effect. Although they did not disclose the actual count, six of the eleven provinces had, in the past two weeks, made public their decision to support the motion. Gauteng, Free State, Easterns, Eastern Province, Boland and Western Province all issued press releases stating that would vote in favour of the motion. ESPNcricinfo learned that at least one other union would do the same. Only Northerns Cricket Union stated their objection to the motion and indicated that they would vote against it.The decision brings to an end a 16-month saga which has essentially revolved around a battle between CSA chief executive Gerald Majola, and Nyoka. Majola and 39 other staff members received a collective R4.7 million (US$ 671.428) in bonuses after the hosting of the 2009 IPL and Champions Trophy but those payments were not authorised through CSA’s remunerations committee (REMCO) and were picked up as irregularities. Nyoka had repeatedly pushed for an external audit and had already lost one vote of no-confidence and had to win a court battle to be reinstated.KPMG were eventually tasked with looking into CSA’s financial affairs and found that Majola may have breached the Companies’ Act on four counts. They recommended legal advice which resulted in a severe reprimand for Majola. However, the spat between Majola and Nyoka had not cooled, as Nyoka struggled to gain access to various documents. At the conclusion of their annual conference in September, CSA tabled a second motion of no-confidence in Nyoka. They claimed he had breached media protocol, and the Companies’ Act by taking his honorarium in advance, and that they were unhappy with the way he handled press releases. National team manager Mohammad Moosajee also penned a letter saying Nyoka’s conduct would make it difficult for Moosajee to maintain discipline in the team.Nyoka’s tenure has ended 10 months prematurely, and this time there is indication that he will not fight further. Although his lawyer, Bernard Matheson, believes his client will have reason to take CSA back to the courts if he is removed because Matheson has said the grounds are improper, Nyoka appears to have accepted his fate. CSA also do not anticipate another court battle, although Khan said the possibility of it recurring can only be confirmed by Nyoka himself.”You should direct that to Dr Nyoka,” he said at the conclusion of the special general meeting. “All I can say is that I am deeply saddened by all of this. I have never seen anyone take an organisation that they serve voluntarily to court.”CSA have also had to deal with the departure of the REMCO chief, Thandeka Mgodosu, who tended her letter of resignation on Friday. She said she could no longer work with the current board because she believes there is a lack of transparency. Khan said most of the board came to know of her resignation on Saturday morning but are confident they can move on without her.”We have very highly qualified people in positions on REMCO and nothing prevents us from acquiring expertise from outside,” Khan said. With corporate governance and the paying of external and internal bonuses through REMCO a central issue of the ongoing saga, CSA are in the process of appointing a Legal and Compliance Manager and said they are close to announcing who will occupy that post. Also imminent is the announcement of sponsors, who have been reluctant to deal with CSA until the board’s issues have been resolved. Majola confirmed that two deals have been done and will be made public this week. The ongoing T20 series against Australia was forced to be played without a sponsor and CSA gave the naming rights to a charity at no cost. It was seen as a major failing but Khan said the organisation weathered the storm well. “CSA was in a superb financial position to deal with these difficult issues. We also signed a R1.5 billion deal with broadcasters.” Khan said that CSA are willing to “go to every business partner and answer any questions they have in mind.”Transparency is the new buzz-word around CSA, but it will take some time before the public will be convinced that the organisation, and Majola, are free from blame. They hinted at releasing the finalised KPMG report after consulting as a board and obtaining permission from KMPG. Should that happen, it will go some way towards easing concerns. For now, the board has simply acknowledged that they have erred. “We have made mistakes but we love the game and we want to serve the game,” Khan said.

I'm supportive of this process – Nielsen

Tim Nielsen, the Australia coach, has said he is firmly in support of whatever measures are taken to improve cricket in the country despite the uncertainty over his future

Tim Nielsen, the Australia coach, has said he is firmly in support of whatever measures are taken to improve cricket in the country despite the uncertainty over his future because of the recommendations made in the Don Argus report.”The review’s been done with the sole purpose of improving and getting Australian cricket back to where we want to be, at No.1, and that’s what we’re all about as a team and especially in my role as coach, that’s what I’m all about,” Nielsen said in Colombo on the eve of the fourth ODI against Sri Lanka. “I’m supportive of this process; I just need some time to ensure that we go through this process and get all the information before we start making too much comment.”The Argus report recommended that the coach’s role be expanded to make him the leader of the overall coaching strategy for Australian cricket. The coach, along with the captain, will also be part of the five-member selection panel. However, it is not certain that Nielsen will be the man to fill the expanded role. Jack Clarke, CA’s chairman, said “in a restructure, you don’t just give someone the job in a new role” but added that Nielsen was welcome to re-apply for the role.”I think the most important thing is it’s been an exhaustive look at how we’re going to get Australian cricket back to where it wants to be, No.1 in all forms of the game,” Nielsen said. “You don’t do that by skirting around the edges and having nice, feel-good looks at things and hoping you’re going to fix things up by doing them the same way. We are 100,000% behind Australia being the best cricket team in the world and we’re going to start that process by winning again tomorrow and pushing on from there.”Michael Clarke, Australia’s Test and ODI captain, said that one of the major aspects of the Argus report was its emphasis on the necessity for an improvement in communication. “The positive from that is it allows the communication between selectors and players to be very clear now,” he said. “It allows me to give the player the consistent feedback the player is probably searching for and to let him know the reasons for his selection or non-selection. It certainly makes me more accountable now and I look forward to the challenge.”Another fallout of the Argus report was the removal of Greg Chappell, the national talent manager, from the selection committee. According to the , Chappell was banned from the Australian dressing room while the team was batting, because he was a disconcerting influence. Clarke, however, said he had no problems with Chappell.”My communications with Greg have been fantastic. He’s been open and honest with me and I’ve been able to do the same back in return,” he said. “My relationship with all the selectors has been fantastic and I’m certain that will continue.”

West Indies have suffered a double injury blow ahead of the World Cup, with opener Adrian Barath and wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh picking up hamstring injuries that have put them out of action for two to three weeks. Batsman Kirk Edwards and wicketkeeper Devon Thomas have been cleared by the ICC to replace the two players and will join the West Indies squad on Monday.Baugh was forced to retire out on 29 during the warm-up match with Sri Lanka. Darren Bravo took his place behind the stumps during Sri Lanka’s chase. Barath did not take any part in that game. Later, both underwent scans, and the West Indies media spokesperson had confirmed that the outlook was not good.Meanwhile, there was some rare good news in the West Indies camp when Kieron Pollard, who sat out of both the warm-up games due to a side strain, was declared fit.West Indies have the resources in their current squad to manage until replacements arrive – in addition to Darren Bravo who can keep, they have Devon Smith, an opener who can take Barath’s place at the top of the order.West Indies play their opening game against South Africa in Delhi on February 24. Their next three games are against Netherlands, Bangladesh and Ireland, before the potentially tougher group encounters with England and India, on March 17 and 20.

Indians set for record payday

The Indian players in the IPL auction could be set for a bumper payday as there is far more overseas talent for fewer slots and vice versa

Sharda Ugra and Nagraj Gollapudi07-Jan-2011

The explosive Yusuf Pathan could well command the highest price at the IPL auction•AFP

Here’s the good news: there is a total of $72.3m dollars floating around for cricketers from all over the globe at the IPL’s bumper auction in Bangalore’s Royal Gardenia hotel this weekend. Most of it, though, will be spent on Indian players, with the big-ticket overseas players discovering that after three seasons of big spending, their big tickets have expired. The reason: there are many more overseas players up for auction than their Indian counterparts. Or, to put it another way, far more overseas talent for fewer slots and vice versa. The 2011 auction has 305 overseas cricketers for the 95 foreign slots available among the ten teams, as opposed to 48 Indians in the auction for what in reality are a minimum of 200 places. As in conventional economics, the IPL’s law of demand and supply dictates that demand will fix its own price.”If you are looking for an allrounder from among the foreign players,” one franchise official said, “you know if you have ten options and you don’t get the first nine, you will get the tenth, who will still be a player of quality. That is not what is happening with the Indians. The sheer scarcity of Indian talent will drive values and prices very high.”The auction is likely to indicate how franchises will conduct their business in the second phase of the IPL, where team numbers are up from eight to 10 and the schedule changes to a 74-match calendar with playoffs.Steve Rixon, the former Australia wicketkeeper now on the Chennai Super Kings support staff, told ESPNcricinfo that the franchises at this auction would be a “little smarter” than the previous one, and make their choices very carefully over “who they are selecting, why they are selecting and whether they fit into the bigger picture.”Given the IPL’s lopsided numbers, there is now a slim chance of overseas players picking up the highest IPL contract, like the $1.55m deal handed out to both Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff in 2009. It is in fact Yusuf Pathan and Yuvraj Singh who could well be in a close contest for the weekend’s biggest wage slip, because they are both Indian and impact players.Nor will it be a surprise if some of the best-known international names land far smaller pay cheques than a range of players spanning Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma, Robin Uthappa and Saurabh Tiwary. The grapevine suggests that most franchises will not fill their quota of ten overseas signings. The biggest lesson from the past three seasons of the IPL, a franchise executive said, was that, “ten foreign players are too many… you waste them. Sometimes you have to leave a quality player on a bench. It’s not good for him, not good for you. The optimum number is about eight. It gives you enough options: to play an extra bowler, someone may be injured or unavailable.”The auction’s global graph, said another official, would move east and south. “Franchises will spend more money on Indian players followed by the Sri Lankans and South Africans. Then the Australians, because of availability. That is where the England players will be hurt – usually their window is too small for teams to consider.” Some overseas players will, of course, command high prices. These will be men of express pace, like Dale Steyn or Shaun Tait, who can blow open games, or batsmen who can do the same, like Chris Gayle or David Warner. Or a big name whose purse will come with the promise that he can win at least four or five games on his own and command star value. Step forward Muttiah Muralitharan and Jacques Kallis. The most unpredictable buys in the auction could well come from the new franchises, like the faction-ridden Kochi or Sahara-owned Pune, who find the entire exercise a mental and financial challenge – more so because 12 star players have already been retained. A Chennai franchise insider said the two new teams would be looking for that one star buy. Their plans, he believed, would be similar to Chennai’s in 2008. “Unlike most teams, Chennai didn’t have an icon player. Chennai went all out to get MS Dhoni. This time again there is expected to be a mad rush for such a player who could add the star value and the brand image to the franchise… at least one such player who could be their captain.”However one of the officials of a new franchise said his side were left with “not so many” options. “The top 10 players in the world are gone. If you take Mumbai and Chennai, they have been allowed to retain players who are easily worth around $6 million.” They would do well to heed Delhi’s advice: that the players with the biggest price tags aren’t the only ones to pursue. Due to the Twenty20 format, a Delhi insider said, it doesn’t make sense to spend money beyond a certain level on a player. “We have seen that several high-value players have not delivered in games”. The brevity and speed of the game, he said, gives a less-skilled player a “better chance of delivering in a big T20 game… just like there is far less chance of a lesser player coming through in a tough Test match situation. That is the nature of the beast.”The best squad, then, is a mix of “allrounders and impact players”. Or, as Rixon put it, players who fit the teams’ macro-mould. “If bowling is your strength, you need strong upper-order batting. You need players who can bowl and bat…” Teams would also be on the lookout for the decision-makers who can deliver. “That is where the older heads have a role to play and that can only come from experience. That is why there are still older players on the circuit.” That is why Anil Kumble will be missed. The presence of a Tait or a Steyn, and therefore the demand for them, will be even more vital and valuable than that of a star batsman. Even over four overs, their pace and ability can ask questions of the bits and pieces players (who will proliferate in the IPL) that will likely be left unanswered.Team like Kings XI Punjab, who have had three rough and controversial years followed by three months of legal wrangling with the BCCI, will be looking for stability. A Punjab spokesman said the franchise wants players, “who perform and not only those who command large amounts of money. It will be performance that counts and not only money.”It’s the IPL so money will count. It will walk and strut and it will talk. But at the auction, it is going to speak a language not of glamour or glitz, but that of business and bottom lines. The $74.3m are, for the better part, going to have to be judiciously spent.

Manchester City: Txiki makes Erling Haaland offer

According to reliable journalist Gianluca Di Marzio (via City Xtra), Manchester City have made a sensational offer to Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Haaland’s career

Whilst the season may not have gone exactly as the Norway international had planned due to a number of injuries which forced him to the sidelines for ten of Dortmund’s league games, the 21-year-old has remained lethal in front of goal, having scored an incredible 16 goals in 19 Bundesliga matches.

When combined with his staggering overall record of 56 goals in 62 German top-flight games, Haaland has become one of the most sought-after players across the whole of Europe.

As a result, Manchester City and Real Madrid have emerged as the frontrunners in the race for his signature.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-developments-2/” title=”Man City latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: City’s offer

According to Di Marzio, as relayed by City Xtra, the Sky Blues have proposed an offer to Haaland. Taking to Twitter, City Xtra shared:

“Man City have presented an offer to Erling Haaland: An annual salary of around €30M per season for five years. The offer presented by the Man City also includes the release clause of €75M plus agent commissions equal €70M. [via @DiMarzio]”

The Verdict: Would be a magnificent signing

City boss Pep Guardiola is a keen admirer of Haaland, having hailed the 21-year-old as an “exceptional striker”.

As a result, director of football Txiki Begiristain has seemingly been doing anything he can to secure the Norwegian, given his side’s failure to secure Harry Kane last summer.

With such an efficient goalscorer in Guardiola’s side, City’s attacking threat could dominate Premier League defences.

Therefore, Haaland’s arrival at the Etihad could prove to be a magnificent bit of business if Txiki can get the deal over the line.
